I personally dont have a problem with the ban
however what i do have a problem with is the fact that the House of Commons is exempt from this ban, because its classed as a Palace.
Hummmmmmmmmm does that seem fair rolleyes

Yes, I don't understand that at all, apart from the fact that a handful of influential cigar-puffing lords put pressure to exempt them. One rule for the oligarchs, another for the plebs

I intensely dislike being in a smokey environment and I'd like to as a non-smoker, have rights to my health not being tarnished by someone else's bad habits.
It's an addictive drug and I wish it was banned fully. The actual practicalities of this are near impossible at the moment. I'd rather when I was out I could come home without my clothes, hair, skin and other items smelling of smoke. The health implications for smokers are awful and haivng recently seen a close family member suffer on the end of this, it's heart breaking.
I'm glad a packet of ciggies cost five quid, most of it being tax, and I wish they cost more so less people would do it so readily and more money goes into supporting the health service to look after those with smoking related diseases (hopefully).
It not fair on those around you to make them breathe your smoke. Ban it in all public places regardless asap please. My personal opinion of smoking. biggrin

think we all agree in general on this but the fact is you mention your rights, what about smokers rights? why shouldn't they be allowed smokers only establishments? or is it smokers don't have rights? as for health its just as well smokers pay for the majority of the nhs bill or all our taxes would be sky high, but like you mentioned smoking is addictive and most smokers i know would love to give up and some have but the fact is some can't the issues should be getting people to stop smoking and banning tobbaco from this country alltogether rather than impossing hefty taxes on the people that smoke and taking away there rights, the answer is ban tobbaco from this country and help the smokers get over it, i know it takes will power but some people just don't have it and it don't help every shop you walk by has cigarettes dangling in there face, but lets be honest here that will never happen as the goverment needs the billions in revenue they make each year from smokers. The answer is simple ban tobbaco not the smokers there just the scapegoats.
I'm fine about having smokers only places. I'm happy with segregated, smoking and non smoking sections too.
I don't see why I should leave somewhere just because I dont want to inhale another persons smoke. I don't want a lung full of chemicals thanks, and the sooner smokers realise that not everyone in the world thinks theyre the evil ones the better. I object to smoking not to the people smoking the ciggies.
The Nhs has stop smoking schemes to get people off the habit and yes it does take will power, but I know which I'd rather do if it were a choice between upsetting my family cos theyre a member down or biting the bullet and giving up. confused

hi everybody please bear with me if this posting is all wonky and bits are all over the place been a member on here for over a year but have only just started using the forum thingy and this is my second posting so you could say im a forum virgin so here goes lol
i totally agree with cplbbw on this that smoking should only be banned in eating establishments including pubs with resteraunts i smoke and my wife smokes so for people who go out for a meal theres nothing worse than when your about to tuck into your meal the waft of smoke up your nose and thats from a smokers point of view i class myself as a considerate smoker in the fact that as well as being a cabbie and working in the office at the weekend i donot smoke in my car nor do i smoke in the office if there is another non smoking member of staff present however if a passenger asks if he/she can smoke then 9/10 times i say yes and have one with them (normally gets you a tip) the only time i refuse is cos some scumbag i av just picked up wants to smoke his joint and the smell of that lingers for a very long time.
its alright all the non smokers saying oh yes this is a victory for us but what they dont realise is that if we all gave up smoking that the amount of tax they pay in their wages would increase by 2 to 3% (government statistic) to make up the shortfall in the revenue.
for me personally i love going down the pub play pool have a bevvy and yes a fag as to be able to do that is my civil right if a non smoker doesnt like it they can always go to the other side of the pub where most pubs have installed extractors and air conditioninganyway thats enough of me harping on about it i personally feel it shouldnt be banned.

Scumbag confused: As a cabbie I would have thought the differentials between drunks and scumbags as you call them would have been obvious. I am not a cabbie but I have given enougth lifts in my time to know which of the 2 causes more grief. I Was a Scumbag for 8 years gave up 5 years ago and have been a heavy drinker for the last 5 years (yeh I kinda switched) and to be honest if health issues were not included I know I would rather be a scumbag anyday. I have caused far less bother on this earth as a scumbag than I ever have as a drinker. I mean how many scumbag dens do you know where a fight breaks out?
As for smoking ban yeh a total ban is fine by me. I was a smoker who could quite happpily go without for 5 hours and enjoy one when I got home. As long as I knew I wasent forever without one the stress was minimal.
Mr Tweeky
fair point mr tweeky and yes the drunks are the worse of the 2 i will have to be more careful in the choice of words i use in future sorry

The above statement in red is just so NOT true. The tax from tobacco does not even come close to paying the NHS bill. Smokers related illnesses cost the NHS a fair chunk of the funding anyway. The tax from smokers goes to central funds but even if it went direct to the NHS it would not cover the total NHS costings by a long way.
I would like to see the cost of a packet of cigs rise to around £20 and then £15 of it go direct to the NHS service.
Jude

yep jude penalise the smokers even more and let the tobbaco companies carry on making profits, why should smokers pay for drink related illnisses or anything else for that matter or is it just you don't smoke and are prejudice to those who do, its just my opinion but i think there should be more help to get people to stop smoking rather than punishing them even more. I also stated in the last post that the answer is to ban tobbaco alltogether in the uk, i see you didn't agree with that but think cigarettes should go up to £15 to £20 a packet, is that so it will keep your own taxes down and if so then if you want a better nhs service you should be willing to pay for it yourself.

Seperate smoking establishements wont work its just not practical. You will just end up with non smokers who wont go out because all the smokers will want to go to a smoking establishement and simly say " well you dont have to come if you dont want to ". Can you imagine it non smoking muches, what a fuss that would cause. Believe in the evil power of the white stick, in the pub where I go there are four old men who have sat together for years. 2 smoke 2 dont and if a pub was built next door for smokers and the current pub was made non smoking the 2 would move and the other 2 would stay, FACT.
As for help with giving up smoking lets face it there are endless amounts of help, people just dont want to give up and will make any argument in defense of the habbit.

There you are.... some links for those who wanted more support quitting.
Want me to hold your hand while you do it?
Or visit you in hospital while you're having your heart attack like my dad did? mad
It hurts to see one of your loved ones suffer like that and be totally helpless all because they smoked. If you're telling me it's your right to smoke, then don't do it around someone who doesn't want to go the same route my dad has recently. If you're wondering why I'm so vehemently disagreeing with smoking its because there are so many avenues open for self help but almost no-one takes it til it's too late and the damage is done. :x
I thought it was my fault for not encouraging him to quit sooner, for not supporting him. I blamed him for making the choice to smoke and hated that he'd put himself in that situation. I questioned everything and anything including the government, the companies that sell them and it all came down to the fact my dad made his choice and so I have to live with that. He now has a heart condition and I don't know if I'm going to see him at the end of each day or not. sad it's heart breaking.
Yes it makes me angry. It's not the person I object to, its the smoking and the sooner its banned from public places to make it harder for smokers to get the chemicals into my life, the better. Banning it from public places will encourage those who are trying to quit to stay with it and to make their lives healthier. Help is available if you want to quit, but like all addictive things, it takes guts and will power. I have every admiration for those who try to stop because I aknowledge it's difficult, but help is there if you want it.
