Dell UK are muppets. For reasons I won't go into they forced my sister to cancel one of her credit cards.
I got my laptop from Dell US, they seemed pretty prompt and fairly helpful but only because I was able to get a mate with a US registered card to order it for me.
PC World are also muppets.
Generally, Dabs are ok for computer stuff, though I've had a couple of problems with them in the past.
It might be worth getting a friend in the know to build your new PC out of components. True you won't have the Dell guarantee, but each component will have the statutory warranties.
Even if you buy the friend in question a bottle of whisky for their trouble, you'll still have saved a packet.
Tell me about it. I've also just placed an order with Dell. No offence but I couldn't understand a word the customer service guy was saying over the phone. Me thinks it's a call centre on the other side of the globe. I'm just praying that the damn thing arrives b4 xmas as it's a present.
Computers are great when everything goes well, but when it doesn't mad :x
At the risk of annoying you more, I haven't had much problem with Dell & I'm on my third PC from them. But lots of :therethere: :therethere: :therethere:
Have a look at all the other people that are pissed with dell
My 2 Dell PCs and my one at work are great machines - nowt wrong with them, it's customer services, customer sales and after-sales who are so so shite.

This is true, there is nothing wrong with their gear once you get it.
We're in the process of moving over to Dell gear here.
Jesus beginning to wondwer why I bothered, I do know a man who can build me a PC just I would have had to have waited till after xmas!!
Dell fucked up an order of my dads and we are still waiting for a digital camera since last December which was promised as compensation for thier cock ups.
They were on watchdog this time last year for extremely poos customer service.
A mate of mine is an IT bof and he suggested Dell on account of their good machinery, no complaints with the machine but the service is shyte. my mate is in charge of one of the BAE sites and has 1200 Dell desktops and 25 Dell servers and as such has his own Dell representative. I expressed my concerns to him and he was suitably redface about it because he had reccommended them to me.
He contacted his rep to see if they could intervene, although she wasnt supposed to because she works for the corporate side not the home PC side but she did her best. A week later when i asked my mate for an update he forwarded me an email that had been forwarded 23 times within the Dell customer sercives depertment from person to person with no one wanting to take responsibility for our order.
I took the action of forwarding this to my contacts within Dell who did not respond, i printed it and faxed it to their London office, Dublin office, US office, i posted a copy to the customer services manager in Dublin and still to this day have not had a response nealy 12 months later.
Im off to phone them now again, i had forgotten about all this, xxxxxxxxxxxxyour gonna get a phone call in just a moment but whats the betting it goes to answer phone yet again. mad :x :x
We ordered it on line with 2 week delivery, ordered 1st week of Nov and delivered.................. no sorry we even had to go and fetch it from the bloody carrier depot because they failded to deliver on 3 timed deliveries, eventually got it in the house about the 20th Jan
Dell.................................wouldnt piss on the place if it was on fire.
Naming and shaming is not allowed.
Now theres a shock
'Hi your through to the voice mail of xxxxxxxx i am out of the office until 4th Jan, please leave a message after the tome and i will never get back to you'
How the fuck has she still got a job? evil  mad :x
You should know better than to post a phone number!! if anyone is interested.
Just left a message stating that i will be calling her on the 4th and will be expecting my camera within 14 days of her return
...................Happy New Return to work you Cow!
Do what all good Americans would do........
SUE thier arses.
You have waited this long, another three or four years of legal pissing around and it might just get to court.
Only to be postponed for a year or two.
Dell and after sales service just do not go in the same sentence, or even world.
maybe I should just buy a calculator or something! I cant remember it ever being this hard to get a pc the first time round?? confused
Just to put another view on this.....
Middle of this year I ordered a PC to replace my dads virus-ridden one (basically very old and had never had AV or a firewall and was running w98 which I have a persaonl dislike of).
Placed the order over the internet by creditcard. Delivery was to a different address than the card details and schedueled for 7 working days later.
Tuesday after next comes (delivery day) and it arrived. No messing. Just a "Please sign here..... theres your boxes. Bye". Bang on time and all as it should be.
Even had a follow-up call from customer services a day or two later to make sure it had made it and that we were satisfied with it. biggrin
Maybe I should have put the lottery on that week.... confused lol
I have had a bad experience with Dell to, about 12 months ago. As already said, no offence, but all my calls, and there where 100's of them, where transfered to a call centre in India. I couldn't understand a word they where saying and they couldn't understand me. It was so frustrating. mad :x :x :x . The amount of times I had to reorder was unbelievable. In the end I gave up and bought one off the shelf at PC World. It was the same specification as the Dell, but cost me a lot more. To be honest I dont care it cost more and I'm very happy with the system, but as with all PC's I have, after about 12 months I look to get another, but I won't be going through Dell again and thats a fact.
Easy, they took payment for it without any hitch on the day of the order! - you must have been one of the chosen few to receive a timely delivery that year
i still have e-mails now confirming my compensation in the form of a camera and refunded delivery costs, they did refund the delivery but still no camera mad :x :x
my dad already has a digital camera but thats not the point is it.
Well in fact we had pretty good service from Dell , but im sure it was just luck . What were really talking about here is the total culture of big business and their attitude to customers these days .
Im sure that many more millions are spent on " customer services" departments than ever were in my youth , but whoever is training them is obviously the ex-instructor from the Gestapo entertainments office.
Its not really the person on the phones fault ( although you can bump into the odd 'human' who shows up the rest as frankly moronic) . My theory is that its the corporations assumption that none of their staff can actually process thoughts on their own is what causes the problem .
After a series of feckin number pressing options , none of which seem to relate to the problem you have , you are put through to a person . Thank goodness an expert to help me ! That person then goes through a series of steps designed to eliminate your problem from their departments sphere of responsibilty . Finally after a truncated series of questions and holding music ( they have to put you on hold because you have asked a question which doesnt have a check box on their screen) they will eventually tell you that you want another department , at this point they will tell you to ring another number- or worse offer to put you through , which will mean another twenty minutes of holding music and a pleasant robotic voice telling you how important your call is to them .
I may have imagined it through rose tinted glasses , but I have a recollection of a time when you rang Telecom and they wrote down what was wrong then got the relevant person to speak to you without ever once refering to what was " on my screen" .
Anyway im waffling due to recent trauma at the hands of BT's water torture department. Truth is its a simple equation that applies equally to BT, NTL , Microsoft , and Dell Computers and all their ilk .
If the budget for advertising and sales is twenty times the budget for after sales service then you will have lots and lots of customers and lots and lots of sales , but you'll only have them ONCE . In two five or ten years time you will have to explain to your shareholders why your company has slipped into the pit of despair and why your reputation is languishing with the likes of Amstrad and Courts furnishing.
Although we all feel helpless while were holding on with a hot right ear and a neck ache listening to feckin Bobby Crush one more time , we arent helpless!
What goes around comes around and eventually , although not as quickly as we would like , Dell will pay the price for treating its customers as numbers and not as people .

Sorry to hear of your problem "fruity 1976"
My advice is go to your local computer shop and get them to build you one to your specification. I did that two years ago and the computer with DVD and CD-reader/writer, monitor, speakers, keyboard. 512 megs of RAM and a Pentium 2 processor and XP came ro a grand total of just under , A similar 'spec ' computer from Dell and many other suppliers was costing over twice that. It was built for me in just two days and came with a 12 month warrenty.
The other good thing about having it made locally is you can just take it back if it goes wrong and drop it on the counter. No packing it off in the mail or returning it to a distributor to send off either.
I hope you get everything sorted out soon.

The only customers that companies like Dell care about are business customers. By and large they get better treatment. The business after sales support call center is local (or was the last I heard). Nothing else matters. Fuck 'em and farm it off.
My sister's a cheeky minx. She needed a new PC a couple of years back. I said I could buiild it for her if she wanted, but that Id' rather not because I can offer no guarantee. I selected and priced up all the parts to give her an idea of how much it would be. I said I'd do it if a shop bough box was really that much more expensive. She took the info I gave her down to her local computer shop and presented it to them as if it was a quote she'd got elsewhere, so they matched it!
Maybe I should do that!
I tried to reorder one last time if it goes tits up this time Im gonna make somebodys life miserable for a few weeks! I still hate dell! So far anyway!
Maybe a christmas miracle will happen (although I very much doubt it!) even a new year miracle would help!
And what about PC world they said they tried to deliver my fucking monitor and put a card through the door?? Must have had the wrong fecking door! EEEEJITS

I think that if you read the report in the register, then your perception as you will see is wrong.
Everyone who deals with dell, get fucked over.
I work for a large company and in my building alone we have about 500 Dell machines. Over the last 12 months about 60% of them have failed due to hard drive faults...and now to top it off....the fookin mainboards are starting to fail too.....
The greased us up and aimed for penetration......My advice...dont bluddy touch them with a barge pole...

I did the same, all that crap about build your own computer, and one of our sales staff will call, after I don't know how many times I filled in their on-line requirements nobody contacted me EVER, by mail, email or phone. In the end I walked into PC world and bought a very nice Compaq. Staff in PC World are equally useless, but at least it's a box by a known maker and you can carry it away in your car.
Despite asking not to get it I still get a monthly catalogue of deals, what does that cost?
Thats really off putting for buying from them as well and especially after it seems i finally got my order in at last and its went through today confused
Fingers crossed!
we orderd a computer of dell you dont actually own the computer because dell run the bios and can track all your movements we had this argument with there solicitors and ended up paying 180 pounds for a 700 pound computer and are getting the biios flashed hooray the end of dell
How can they do that??
If I bought the fucking thing it damn well belongs to me and Dell can kiss my hairy arse!
they can do that that because the bios is always belongs to dell you have to get the bios flashed but the snag isif its a new machine it invaladates the guarentee so dell no what you are upto
