In the course of a conversation today, a friend commented that I do solitude very well. I think it's true; I love my own company. I'm happy in the company of others but equally comfortable spending time alone.
Do you enjoy solitude? Do you relish time alone or do you long for company? Does being alone worry you?

i never feel alone with all my voices :silly:
actually i love spending time alone i feel very comfortable in my own company
I'm very comfortable being on my own. I lived on my own for a few years and even now spend quite a bit of my time on my own. I'm very comfortable with it and like having time on my own to do my own thing. I actually don't think I could have a relationship with someone who wanted to be with me all the time with no time to myself.
I do enjoy solitude, sometimes. I work in a very 'customer facing' job and it's nice to get home sometimes and just sit in the peace and quiet, no tv, no music etc. I enjoy my own company and I think I'd be able to do solitude quite well. I wouldn't want perfect isolation, but I enjoy time to myself.
I have spent alot of time working alone, and with others. I like time on my own. but there are somethings you just can not do on your own.
peace quiet n tranquility 2 read a book................brilliant........
Solitude can be good and bad....
Living alone ,for me at least , is not pleasant......Recently when I was unemployed I could go a whole week without actually engaging in conversation with another human being ....
That kind of solitude I can do without lol ....
I'm a loner, it's what I do.

I'm not quite sure what I am ....
I dont need to physically interact with people but simply crave company if you understand what I mean....
I know what I mean but I'm finding it difficult to transfer it into text :-(

I think I know what you mean Steve.
I think at our cores we are pack animals. having other people around us is a good thing, if only to recognise ourselves as part of a larger whole. belonging.
That may well be a part of the success of forum based sites. We can be alone, and yet still be with/around others.
My own 'loner' label is self applied.
I enjoy company... crave it even. But can only spend so much time with another person before feeling 'edgy' in some way. No fault of theirs, quite simply me own desire for my own 'space'.

I love being totally alone for a while, especially with 5 kids and a husband who has spent most of the last year off work with a bad back. Oh that, and the fact that I run a shop that is open 7 days a week! I can see that being alone all the time would probably get me down. Eventually.
When my kids were small, I hated never having proper adult conversations that didn't revolve around children (mine or theirs!). While I would have liked to have been able to shut myself away for a few hours (or days) I couldn't, so now they are bigger, I relish those times. I had the bed to myself for a whole night two weeks ago and it was bloody lovely! I keep threatening to divorce Mr Stuff so that I can send the kids to him for the weekends and have the time to myself. It's a good job he knows I'm joking. At the moment
I hate my own company and need to be around people. If I spend too much time alone, I get quite low

I don't think we have a universal inner core. Some people thrive on solitude. St Cuthbert for instance. Or Gramsci, who did his best thinking in solitary confinement.
ah, I wouldn't ever assume a 'trait' in humanity were universal.

At all the Munch's and socials we have been to we meet loads of people in that situation. Ones who's kids are with the ex partner for the weekend. Being in a 2nd or whatever number relationship seems to be a good option for swingers lol Certainly its the reason we dont get out cus there's no ex to look after the kids. Not that I would though anyway.
As for solitude. Yes its great but simply so I can get stuff done. I get very little time to work on my self employed stuff simply because its impossible to do in the house with the kids here.
Ahhh the sweetness of solitude.
I like to remember that I’m basically alone in the world and that I’m gonna die soon ... always cheers me up. smile
To me it's very important, sometimes, to be alone. It's like guarding guilty secrets. If someone knew all my secrets how could I enjoy feelings of splendid isolation?
Once I read this: "If you don't like being in your own company, what makes you think others will?"

I fear for some (myself included) it is....
as a mum of 5, with a husband that didnt work, solitude has been a very rare thing, in fact has been craved desperately on occasions, to let my brain re-focus. Silence was almost unheard of (pardon the pun)and there were days when I felt like my brain was awash with too much....sensory stimulation from every angle and I needed to just ...be.
Now Mr B has a job and its just me and the youngest, I am getting plenty of time to be and to sit...the TV doesnt go on at all all day once ive watched the news before the school run and once baby is asleep, I am loving the chance to be on my own and to answer to no-one....I find it girds my loins for the evening when the house is full again!
Having been in a situation wher it was difficult to obtain solitude, I appreciate it very much when i do manage it.
I too would say i do 'Solitude' very well. Although to be in a state of seclusion has more of a negative undertone. Id call my state of Seclusion "Me Time". Very different i know but its this form of solitude that i think we all relate to. To be forced into Solitude by any other means would obviously not be deemed as 'quality time' but rather an emotional challenge.
Solitude? I thought it was a card game.

... And im out!
I like my own company as I love to spend time reading and pottering around my home. Sometimes I do this too much and suddenly realise I havent seen anyone all weekend! However, thats not very often with my family always popping in and its always by choice when I am alone. I have never had a problem in solitude but I think its very different to feeling lonely. As the saying goes, you can be surrounded by people and be lonely. I am very rarely lonely as I can go into the chatroom if I feel the need to chat or, more importantly, I can pick up a phone or go out and see friends and family.
So here's to solitude - a very under rated part of ones life lol

a very well put post corrie i have to say. I completely get what youre saying. Of course its paramount that when you feel like it you are able to go and "see" people and socialise in the more conventional ways. I completely dig Solitude and "me" time... Its important though to have those interaction skills that we all need to deal with the challenges life throws at you!.
Big Ups To Solitude! wink
I can do it to some degree but then need an injection of 'people' to re-energise me. I guess it's one of the prime traits of most extroverts - i.e. they take their energy from without whereas introverts take their energy from within.
I have a job that means spending time with large groups of people some days and I do really value my sometimes long drives home. Five hours on the road back up here from Essex can give me the time I need to 'wind down' etc. That said, it's normally always interspersed with a couple of phonecalls.. just so I know there are still people out there ;-)
I once went on holiday for a week on my own. After two days I found myself wandering the town talking to anyone who'd listen confused:
Solitude's great as long as it's optional... I would hate to have no choice.
