whats going on?
For the last week or so the pages are taking longer and longer to load on this site.
And it is only this site!!
We have B/band and have no problem browsing any other site on pretty much any subject from anywhere in the world, but try and move swiftly around any part of SH - forums/chat doesnt make any difference where - and it's just not possible.
We do know we havent paid our premium price to get a clockwork service and unless this is seriously improved very quickly we'll certainly remember how slow the site has become lately when we are next asked for our membership fee!
We're afraid all the usual exscuses are wearing pretty thin - server down / server overloaded etc - this is not a new problem, and frankly more than enough time has been given to the owners to sort it out and find a proper permenant solution!
We've been patient and waited for all the new 'promises' to be delivered - enough is enough.
Sort it out and very very soon!
Otherwise this site is gonna be leaking members worse than southern water.
yes we have raised a support ticket
and
yes we have done all the usual stuff to get our BB connection as smooth and efficient as possible (cos we believed that it might have been our fault - poor PC etc)
and
yes we still think this subject should be aired here because it cant possibly just be us experiencing these probs
and
yes if it isnt just us the owners should know !!

an awful lotta members have seen it over the past week or so
PS - it took over 25 mins to submit this little tome - and that doesnt include composing and typing it as we did that on word and simply pasted it into here

I've been informed that all of the issues causing the problems with speed have been resolved, the site has been getting busier though, so we have ordered some more slave servers.
Servers do fall over, despiet everything we have back ups and slaves, all in all the site runs on about 14 servers, there's 3 people in the UK, 2 in Prague and a server/network specialist company in the USA on text notification, when anything goes wrong its picked up straight away.
When things go wrong most its often a new problem, sometimes loads get higher and one of the front end servers drops out, the site has been getting busier and weve been adding new servers as it does, there's also some more on the way.

And so we have to repeat that the owners of this site have had lotsa time to sort it out and ensure they stay on top of the problem.
We guess only time will tell

For what it is worth I have also been experiencing problems. It's good to see that admin accept there are some issues and are working to resolve them.
However just a thought .... SH has been a "real business" for sometime now, so how about the owners being a little bit proactive and trying to anticipate the demand and increase in the number of users and expanding the system accordingly?
OK I know this is easier said than done, but this is a commercial operation and as such one would expect a little bit of demand forecasting and re-alignment or expansion of the system to cope.
I thought i had been banned the other day cos it wouldnt recognise my user ID or password, it kept saying i wasnt registered or that there were to many connections or couldnt list all banned IPS 
I was wracking my brains to see if I could think of any reason that i may have been banned (me thinks its a guilty conscience.....nah!! more like I thought Mr Bone had gotten himself into trouble

location though can sometimes affect speed to certain websites although thats mainly from servers hosted at greater distances.
All i am thinking is maybe one of the gateways is a little sluggish at the moment as it seems odd its ok for some but slow for others.

Agreed, it does happen Tony, a router goes down, or a cable breaks across the Atlantic and there's location problems, this one was a server fault.
I've no issue with people complaining, its the right thing to do and helps to keep us on our toes
Even though things go wrong from time to time, I like to think that we are doing all that we can, hearing that there was a server problem may sound like the usual excuse, but its not for lack of trying or expenditure to get them perfect on our part.
Webservers are not any different to PC's at home, there's 14 running this site, they hang up/slow down in the same way, then there's the company that hosts them, they give a 99.9% up time guarantee as part of the service level agreement (work that out in hours per year). So we have consultants and staff in place to fix things as quickly as possible when things go wrong and are continually working on the server arrangement to make it as stable as possible.

This site gets about 100,000 visitors daily.
Agreed a counter would be fun, but then it would need to sort out unique vistors, with page loads, revisits etc we'd probably need another server.
At the moment we use a third party service to do this, as it doesn't cost much and adds no loads to the servers or database.

i have absolutely no idea what any of it means, but it might just answer your question if you're dead techie? ;) chatroom won't count, cos it's not page impressions as such, and unique visitors v page impressions, and unique users v unique pages per day looks kinda vague, but it's a lot anyways? traffic looks high, top 10 000, we look kinda busy? ;)

Alexa results are interesting, but are only based on people that have the Alexa toolbar installed, I don't have it but I'm sure that many of you do, if you don't get it and SH rankings over there will rocket up, only needs a few of you ;)
