I've been pondering this.
I think that both words have been used to the extent where they have been watered down to the point of "almost" acceptable.
I'm thinking back to when I was about to leave school....18 years ago. Already the word "tart" was more commonplace than "slut." "Slut" was reserved as a really nasty word......but.....it was on par with "slag," which does not seem to have lost any of it's vitriolic meanings over the years.

We have claimed the words tart and slut as part of our sexuality and use both words in certain situations and know not to use them in others, it just wouldn't work. They are a tool we use when we play together, but only when we play alone, not with other people, odd maybe but that's the way it works for us!
Other words such as slag, whore are a different matter, see them as just being very derogative.

Slut is just plain horrid in my book yet tart is a great word to use jokingly "You ol' tart" when someone is flirting. If I got called a slut even in swing play I wouldn't be best pleased. I also tend avoid all profiles with said word in as I find it portrays an image I am not comfortable with.
