Hello wave
The answer is yes biggrin
(sorry feeling Friday :giggle: )
Good luck with it confused
let me get this right:
you took old HD out of machine was it running as main drive with operating system ?
if so i take you have new HD with XP on it.
on old drive an the end is a set of 8 small pins there should be a small plastic cover over 2 of the pins. look on top of hard drive the should be a pic of different positions for the plastic cover one will say slave.
???

Even with ones that aren't coal fired? lol

We are aware of global warming in Wales and now utilise the power provided by nature (ie sheep power).
;)
When that happened to my old machine, I bought a new PC and had every intention of slaving the old disk in there but they were diffent sorts and the cable wouldn't plug into the old disk sad
So did some research and bought an external disk caddy. Simply plugged in the old disk (didn't bother with setting it to be a slave), attached the USB cable from that to the PC and it was up and working in no time. Just had to move all my stuff from it onto the new hard drive, reformat it and I now have a portable, external hard disk which is very useful for backups and all sort of stuff like that.
That's just one of many solutions and if I managed it then it's got to be the easiest!

There are five sets on pins and the jumper is on the one that says DS(Master)
The diagram says;
"No jumper=DS (Slave) and it shows DS(Master), CS enabled, and Cap Limit, then there is a single pin and double one too but one pin is covered so the jumper can't go on that.
Thanks for your help.
ok no jumper for slave so take plastic off and keep safe.
in machine you will have flat grey cable coming out of new hd if there is a spare plug on same cable it will be hanging loose plug in with RED strip closest to power socket. you will obviously need to find a spare power socket in there to?
have you got all of that ?

Reformat what, the new one or the old one?
I'm a spanners kind of guy lol
Oh definitely the old one! It doesn't have to be reformatted, once you've got all the old stuff off it then you can just delete all the folders and stuff.
If you take your old HDD into PC World or somewhere like that they should be able to tell you what disk caddy will work with your disk. Which is much easier than looking for one on the web - spanners or not!
I'm guessing he means you can plug the flat grey cable in either way, but it'll only work with it in the correct way round.

The red stripe on the grey cable is next to the power connector. ;)
The red stripe usually denotes pin 1 on the cable. Match it up with the diagram on the HD and Bob's your auntie. ;)
the grey flat cable has a single red line running down the side, when you put it into the back of the hard drive that line should be next to the power inlet on the hd that way you know cable is in right way.
you might still have to tell pc to find slave?

DONT reformat anything you will lose everything
Oh god no! Don't try to reformat anything right now.
That's a topic for later, once you've got the drive working and you've got everything you want off it. ;)

Thanks folks, this is the best result I have had from swinging forums in a long time! lol
The flat cable has a white line running down one side and only goes one way into the back of the HDD due to a blanked off female pin.

Erm ....... redface I don't normally talk to my PC so how do I do that?
I know this sounds really weird but I have to go bleed my central heating system now before the boiler blows up so I will let you know how I get on later, or else I'll be on Binxy's sheep power
How would I go about pulling my Panda Titanium from one drive to work on the new one?
Thanks guys all round
im a plumber by trade :giggle:
Glad you got it going Scandal.
Re the external HDD USB caddies designed in china that the likes of etc sell.
They work great for a day or so then out of the blue destroy your drive when you switch it on. Destroyed 2 drives of mine in 2 days.
I have a USB drive that I'm very happy with but its a Seagate ready built one from PC W$rld biggrin
Its 160Gbyte, and yes its almost full mad

I just have to work out how to drag things over like my internet settings, anti-virus and stuff and all that clobber.
Any suggestions on how I can do this? Is it possible to tell the poota which one is the main drive now so I can just go back to normal?
I'll arrange for a friend to get you all a few drinks at the next munch, thanks very muchous!
lol

Have you tried using
I can't see why it wouldn't work if you burnt the info to a disc and then re-installed it. dunno
I'd hang on to see if anyone knows otherwise though. ;)
As for the antivirus, I'm guessing you're going to have to do that as a fresh install and update. ;)
Just make sure you've got your XP firewall up as it'll give you some protection, install the original program then go on-line and update it. All your passwords, referencs, autherisation codes should be fine.
Fingers crossed mate. biggrin

I've actually seen adverts for a half Terrabyte HD (500 gigs)
Didn't seem so long ago that having a 30 meg one for my old Commodore Amiga was being extravagent! lol
I think it was the only time I'd bought something from them (PC W$rld) as the drive was on offer at the time, I'm more an person myself. Arr 'bless' ebuyer :censored:
i use ebuyer too cool
Just for you Scandal
C: Documents and Settings Liaisions Application Data Mozilla Firefox Profiles
The backslashes are removed by the SH sytem so you will have to work out where they go yourself.
Oviously substitute 'Liasions' with your own name
Yep. It's as easy as that. ;)
I also keep a regular backup of this in case I get clobbered by something or my HD fails.
OK go into the profiles folder in the old Firefox and you should find a document marked "bookmarks firefox document" and if you're viewing in "tiles" mode it'll look like a blank page with the Firefox symbol on it, like this.....

where the document is the one highlighted in blue.
Copy this and paste it into the same location on the new drive. (probably C: - Program Files - Mozilla Fireox - defaults - profile )
After that you should have your bookmarks back ;)
That's the file I always pull out to back up the bookmarks. If you open that document it's a Mozilla file with the url's on it.
It's worked for me in the past. dunno
Give it a try and see if it works. As long as you back up the original then there shouldn't be a problem swapping back. biggrin
Is that the page in the "new" install of Firefox?
Try having a look in the "old" copy of Firefox in the similar location on the d: drive (or whatever the "old" drive is.)
Sorry Scandal I'm giving you bum information. redface
Since Firefox changed to version 2 (or whatever the current one is) they store the bookmark recovery in a different location.
C:>Documents and Settings> "username">Application Data>Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles> >bookmarkbackups

Hopefully they should be in there and in a similar location on the other hard-drive.
Pick the document with the latest date (the numbers after bookmarks indicates the dates) from the old HD and try pasting it into "bookmarksbackups" on the c: drive. Remove all other backups first (just back them up somewhere first rather than delete them ;) ).
If you get stuck try having a read and that may give you a bit more help.
Regarding backups, I put all precious data under 'Documents and Settings' and use some software called 'Allway Sync' which is freeware as long as you don't use it too much after that you have to pay $20 (bargain)
I then sync across discs and my network the 'Documents and Settings' folder on a regular basis.
Move Outlook express folder to 'Documents and Settings' too.
your welcome scandal
Scandal- as you seem to be fixed, and all the incredibly sexy nerds seem to be hanging around here, do you mind if I hijack? kiss
Using Windows Media player has started to sound like I'm playing stretched, knackered cassete tapes! Thats the closest I can get to describing it- it's happening when playing stuff I've burned into the library and sounds like someones blowing down a mike- kinda. The distortion is not constant, but it's getting worse.
I'm utterly baffled- Any ideas to help a music loving maiden in distress??
confused
This has me baffled somewhat unless you do have a mic plugged in and your just getting acoustic feedback.
Shame you don't live nearer, as sometimes these little problems require the more personal home visit cool

Aint it just a shame :rascal:
Nope, no mike plugged in- and I've just been through the troubleshooter which made no difference at all rolleyes
Imagine an much played cassette tape, which sometimes snags & drags- in a gale! It's really really odd dunno
you say its on stuff you burned into the libary ?
does it do it when you play a cd and did it do it on stuff already in the libary ?
