Quote by UkwinemanCorrect.
if so i take you have new HD with XP on it.
Quote by UkwinemanThere are five sets on pins and the jumper is on the one that says DS(Master)
on old drive an the end is a set of 8 small pins there should be a small plastic cover over 2 of the pins.

Thanks folks, this is the best result I have had from swinging forums in a long time!
The flat cable has a white line running down one side and only goes one way into the back of the HDD due to a blanked off female pin.
you might still have to tell pc to find slave?

I just have to work out how to drag things over like my internet settings, anti-virus and stuff and all that clobber.
Any suggestions on how I can do this? Is it possible to tell the poota which one is the main drive now so I can just go back to normal?
I'll arrange for a friend to get you all a few drinks at the next munch, thanks very muchous!

This has me baffled somewhat unless you do have a mic plugged in and your just getting acoustic feedback.
Shame you don't live nearer, as sometimes these little problems require the more personal home visit
