I think I prefer the purple, Judy!
It was so much easier to read on my laptop. Although I think I need glasses as my eyes are straining to read even the darker test at times. confused sad Oh dear, I'll end up looking like a naughty secretray with glasses on :? :(
Anyway, glad you got it sorted! biggrin

I'm with vix on this one now I have a laptop. On the pc I could see you fine, but on this i have to tip my screen all over the place to be able to read the pink! lol
But then I am quite fond of the purple font redface
How sad is this post becoming by the second. surprisedops: I really do think I should log out sooner and more often cos I end up having late night conversations about the oddest things.

Gem. x trundles off to bed with her marking for the morning sad
I came across something similar a couple of weeks back. You can get software which causes only a partial download to take place when surfing - it's used to effectively speed up modem links. It does this by degrading the image quality on-the-fly and making downlaods smaller. Looking at the PC settings, they all are set to normal.
If the PC is fine everywhere else, have a look-see if there is some software installed doing that.
Then...
In IE6, check the Tools>InternetOptions>Advanced and check that smart dithering is checked.
Then that Tools>General>Colors is set to "Use Windows Colors"
If you use Netscape or Firefox, check they are not set at 256 colors.
Can't think of anything else!
The problem turned out to be one that had me stumped, well almost.
Trial and error solved the problem in the end.

Basically IE had stopped rendering CSS. Regardless of the settings for fonts, colours, advanced settings etc in IE and in Desktop and Themes it wouldn't render CSS.

I still don't now what caused the problem (annoying to a geek like me biggrin ), but at least we finally got it fixed.

On the subject of CSS, that's something I want to learn more about, do you know of any good tutorial on css JQL? Out of interest did you test it with Firefox as that allows you to view alternate stylesheets? Actually, ignore that as you say the problem was IE related, so changing to Firefox would have obviated the problem rolleyes
The problem wasn't style sheets but IE had forgotten how to render any style sheet!

I've found that just scanning through the site helped me a lot... once you've got the basic parts down pat and understand the "lingo" then you can start working from the drafts/specs quite easy.... thats basically what I did to learn HTML as I use note pad to create my web pages, and use a small amount of CSS to create the basic style.
When you start using CSS over HTML to create web pages, then it starts to become far more complex than HTML but far more designable.
On a side note a "problem" that has been bugging me for ages, am I the only one that cannot select text from the pages created in SH because it selects everything and not the text you put the cursor on?

YES is how I trained myself on most scripting languages, and I'm a (sort of) professional web designer.
as for your text selecting problem: which browser and version are you using? As I don't have that problem at all.
The 'select text' option on here is something that is a problem, but the Big Black Dalek has yet to resolve it, so it's not just you.

Win2000 + IE6 with all the latest patches and fixes.
I can select fine in say here (the edit box) but if i say try to select on a forum thread on say a url that is not a link, all it does is select the top of the page to the point I first place my cursor.
The same problem occurs on adverts and so on.

LOL, you typed that just as I was typing, lol.
I was going to add some detail to the bottom of my last post re learning CSS, but someone came in and I had to do some work sad
Anyhow try this:

I think the highlighting problem is something to do with how the text is being rendered by the IE, pops of to look at thread source
i am quite sure it is something to do with in source, in the css and selecting indervidual word.
I dunnow how to fix tho,
another SH improvemnet would be when i get a pm reminder email is that i could see who it is from by the subject line.

I have a number of websites and I am slowly converting them to CSS. It really is worth it especially with some of the other formatting opportunities that come with this method.
CSS is well worth the effort learning.
Ok, just came across this thread otherwise I'd have tried to help out much sooner. Some more good references and help for CSS (and they have other html/techy info too):
- good tutorials, in fact a very good site overall.
- DHTML (javascript, DOM,..) too
- more of a general programming site but still some worthwhile web stuff
CSS Zen Style Garden (or something - can't remember the URL) is a great starting example of what you can do with CSS.

Oh, and I know everyone's been raving about Firefox recently and it's the new hip browser to use, but... really, it's not as nice as Opera in a lot of ways. Ok you can write plugins to control firefox how you like but with Opera it's all just built in and completely customisable interface, nice bookmark search. It's my current fave.
Firefox still lacks a bit too much for me to love it. Sure it'll get better and kick arse soon.
But anyone still using IE and hasn't tried anything else realllllly really ought to... IE is wayyyy behind. Anyway enough geek speak. PM me to discuss further / for more help with CSS.
If you want to look at some CSS source, the Avatar Sizer Web Page (click on the WWW button below then View>Source) is written mainly using CSS.
The CSS part is embedded into the page and starts at the line: <style type="text/css">
As you can see you can get some fancy looking layouts and colours using just CSS
