Although i didn't agree with Maggie Thatcher on some of her politics. I cant help but like the woman.
And i would definately rate her as one of the top twenty most inflential people of the 20thC

What Thatcherism gave us was a "me me me me" lifestyle in the 80's which has given us a generation of children who expect their parents to work hard and be kept. Over generalisation? maybe, but I am very worried about how children born in the late 80's and early 90's see the world.
Thatcher was created in a time when women were struggling to still be given equality in the home and workplace. She was seen as an icon for women to follow (a female with male balls). Now in the world of work men who portray more female traits are regarded as the more successful leaders and women dont have to emulate men.
I grew up under thatcherism and all I know is high mortgages, capitalism, the "I" culture are things I hate rather than her personally.

I get the feeling we wouldn't have any troops being kidnapped and murdered in Iraq right now if she was in power instead of Blair.

Didn't Thatcher bring out the "right to buy council houses" ??

Thatcher's quip that 'there is no such thing as society', but only individuals who are basically out for themselves was unforgivable. It let loose a flood of selfish nastiness that this country has never really gotten over. It is true that we are now more 'free' because of her; but only in a very narrow economic sense. It seems great being free to afford all sorts of consumer goods, but being free to find yourself an NHS dentist isn't nearly so wonderful.
Thatcher manufactured the war with Argentina in the same way that she manufactured the war with the miners. Both were cynical acts of political posturing designed to cement her place in history.
Any fool can be divisive. Great politicians unite communities. They don't deny they ever existed in the first place. Thatcher will go down in history for sure; but it will be as a crook rather than as the great saviour she sees herself as.

I admire anyone who has the guts to follow anything though, and I believe Maggie did. Good and bad points about her time as PM but I truely believe she earnt the right to be admired or hated. Either make her one of the most influential people this country had during the last half of the century.
