Hi,
Just been reading the post by Lissa (Hobbies) and there seems to be a general interest in Gardening..!
I love gardening. I find it relaxing and great fun.....I'm still learning and experimenting but I Love it. I grew all the flowers for my hanging baskets from seed this year and they looked superb..!
I also bought my niece (she's 4...and a half - the half seems really important to her..!) one of those kids packs containing flower bulbs etc. from a well known diy store, planted them and she was amazed when things started to grow....she's hooked now and plants things here there and everywhere and takes great pleasure when telling people...'I planted those'
I'm thinking of growing some vegetables next year but I need to look up some info on the web first...or...any advice from other like minded green fingered growers wouldn't go a miss.

Great idea .. a gardening tips thread .. I could do with some help as to why my hanging basket plants go yellow after a few weeks .. I water them every day.

How much light are they getting?
What's the drainage in them like? If you're watering them every day and there's no way for excess water to escape then you could be drowning the roots.

Well if someone is handing out advice, I have a grape vine in my greenhouse which
has taken over the place and needs cutting back but i am unsure about how far i need to cut off.

Now's a good time of year to trim back the vine as it isn't growing and you won't kill it even if you take loads off...
How much to take off? As much as you want , it will grow back quite quickly anyway.
im pretty sure you can cut it right back, im sure i saw them do it in spain when i was there for 9 months.
they are quick to grow again so i say get your chopper out confused
Yup love gardening - not that you can tell at the moment looking at my jungle. rolleyes
I was really looking forward to having a couple of hours tidying and weeding today, but i started to read the important announcement thread and now its dark
Anyone have any tips for killing very persistent buttercups, I think they must now be resistant to weedkiller. mad

I'd be tempted to dig them out...one by one if needs be...hard work but effective.
I have to say though....I quite like buttercups..!

You haven't seen how many buttercups  I was digging them out one by one but due to a back injury i couldn't do any gardening last summer and they took over, and I have to confess to not spending as much time in the garden this year as I should of due to spending most Sundays in here. HELP the weeds are taking over!!

Right this is what I do .. I have metal mesh hanging basket holders which I put black plastic bin bag liner in with lots of holes in it for drainage.
I then put a felt or spagnum moss lining in and then potting compost JOHN INNINGS no 1
I put slow release food pellets in the soil
I put 3 petunia plants in it and water them with water to start with.
As the time goes on I put feed in the water .. Water the plants once a day in the mornings and the excess runs onto the floor out the bottom of the baskets.
If I don't water them every day they go limp and wilt .. They hang against my kitchen wall facing south so they get the full strength of the sun on them for most of the day in the summer.
Its so hot out there I can't sit out in the patio but my husband goes a nut brown for laying out in it .. lazy git :fuckinghell:
So what am I doing wrong ... dunno

Are the plants getting scourched by the sun? That would turn them yellow. When you water them in the morning make sure you do not get water on the plants themselves as this will increase the scourching. Try watering them in the evening when the sun starts to go down.

LOL......me too.
However, mentioning slosh or sloshed to be more specific.....I'm also thinking of having a go at making my own wine...to be consumed in my potting shed of course...I might even end up with SwingingHeaven 69..! Tips on wine making would really help..!!

you could also try something called "broadleaf p4" its a gelling agent mix it in with compost when you water it absorbs the water & it wont evaporate the plants have to suck the water out which means you dont need to water so often in summer smile
