Trouble getting in to the chat room? read this first.

Is it only me who can't get into the chat room??
I keep getting told that my nickname needs to be registered with spoffle. S'all that about then?? dunno

Yes I agree something had to be done. I'm still a newbie myself, but i do try to handle myself with a bit of discretion (spell??) and be polite and courteous (again, spell?? lol) to everyone, but i have seen quite a few newbies/single males giving the decent, genuine guys a bad name, plus i had that "incident" yesterday (may take a week or two to stop mentioning this lol!) which didn't do the place any favours.

Hi Judy. Can I suggest you check with your provider that there's not a problem with your email. I registered 2 nicks (one is a variation of the other, standard practice for technical reasons and not an attempt to deceive) a few days ago, and I received my keys immediately.
Another thought has occurred to me while writing this: Registration is a recent requirement, and it may be that many of the regulars simply trusted each other not to steal nicks and never bothered to register them until now. The system may simply be groaning under the load of new registrations at the mo. I would be inclined to wait a day or so, and if still no joy, try registering at a quiet time.

This is gonna happen to more and more people as we try to make the whole room registered. We can't do it all at once because the people running the Spoffle servers would probably have a fit. :shock:
If any of you out there are regular users of the chatroom and you haven't registered your chatroom nickname then now is the time to do it. The registration process is pretty straightforward and once you've completed it you'll have no problems getting into the room and another benefit is that nobody will be able to steal your nickname!

We had problems getting into Chat Room too and like Kriss we think we must be using Java - but not sure. We look forward to the changes you talk about if this will make it easier but we don't understand how that will keep out objectionable people since they can just register as normal. Any idea when the changes will occur? Thanks.

If you're going into the chatroom using the link on the chatroom page then yes you're using Java (sometimes called jirc).
You're also quite right in that people will be able to register more than one nickname for use in the room. Most of the regulars stick with a single name but occasionaly a couple might rearrange the nick depending upon who is actually on-line....ie, jack-n-jill or jill-n-jack. Registering both nicks is probably the better option.
One of things we're trying to cut down on is the people who keep rejoining the room every five minutes under a different nickname. If it's done for a valid reason then fine but we get lots of people who do it to change gender, marital satus, sexuality, race or location just to fit somebody elses 'requirements'. mad

We've also had incidents where somebody in the chatroom has said (for example) "hi, we're a couple looking for a single guy in croydon" and somebody disappears to come back 30 seconds later as something like hung-sexy-croydon-guy-with-gsoh and opens with the line "HI, anybody from Croydon?". The whole thing is misleading and open to abuse. :x :x
Can't help you with when the changes are gonna be made I'm afraid. All I can say is that it is being looked into and with some urgency. Hopefully soon. biggrin

We are missing the Chatroom :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:
We have registered our nickname and have used it several times with no problems but the last two days we have been unable to get into the Chatroom.
Any suggestions ???

Hi Mac and Mary
You may have registered your nickname but not completed the activation. In the e-mail sent to you from Spoffle there will have been an activation code. Did you activate your account using this code? The message you should type into the chat window is:
/msg nickserv activate numberhere
Give that a try first and if you still can't get in let me know which nick you've registered and I'll check it for you.
It could also be a password problem. You may have mistyped your password during the registration process. If you don't have any success after trying the above then we can get your password reset.

We have registered the nickname MacandMary53272 and used it on several occasions.
Shortly after posting 'Help' we were able to get in. We have been unable to for the last two days though so not sure if we have done something wrong.

Your nick is definitely registered, I've checked it on the server.
If you're still having a problem getting into the chatroom it may be a password problem. Type the following:
/join #shhelp
You'll end up on the Swinging Heaven help channel where they will ask you a couple of questions to verify your identity and will then e-mail you confirmation of your password.
Any further problems then send me a pm and I'll try to help.

Thought we had solved our problem but can not get in again today.
We just keep getting unable to connect to server so can not get to chat to any help channel.
Have checked our nickname and password with spoffle help previously and all ok!!
Anything else we can try??

Hi there, I realise i'm still a newbie but having seen lot's of other sites, I have to say the nonsense involved in getting into the chat room pisses me off something rotten. Most other sites once your registered a simple user name & password box filled out & submitted lets you straight in. The SH room seems to change the proceedure everytime, sometimes i can get in sometimes not no matter what you do. Who ever is running this system really should sort things out banghead

Hi prags, have you registered your nickname with spoffle yet? as you may have seen in other threads the Chatroom is going over to registered nickname only. Once that happens you won't get in unless you are registered.
I suggest you go to the chatroom main page and print out all the instructions and follow them to the letter. If you haven't registered do it now. Most failures to access are down to incorrect typing or spacing. If you are registered there shouldn't have any problems.

I am having the same problem as others here and have used the same nickname and password since I joined. Have tried to log in 10 tines in the last 12 hours and still cannot get in to the chatroom. Can anyone help please?

After doing everything advised and getting back into chat room I give up. Now I cannnot get back in. This is not what you would expect from the 1990s regarding technology.

Hi Always,
How are you trying to access the Chatroom? Is it by clicking onto the chatroom page and using the Java access, or have you downloaded mIRC and are using that?
You say you are a registered member, is that just to Swinging Heaven or have you also registered with spoffle? You need to be registered with Swinging Heaven to post, and obviously you are, otherwise I wouldnt have seen your message. Spoffle registration is necessary to enter the chatroom. How to register is explained on the chatroom main page and in the Dummies Guide.
I can recommend mIRC it takes a little while to get used too, but is a very flexible programme, and a lot more fun.
Bye the way it's the 2000's now not the 1990's. lol

Still having same problems on and off. Have tried for half and hour tonight and not been able to access chatroom.
Our name and password have been checked by spoffle help and they are registered we just seem to have problems connecting.

Which means the nick is registered and activated and I can't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to get in the chatroom if you're using the correct user name and password. rolleyes

You're not using a _ instead of a - are you?

Once i try to log in, it says password accepted etc, the following 2 lines are:
Nickserv - More information required
Nickserv - /msg NickServ help indentify for assistance
Does this make sense in finding out my problems with getting into the chatroom?? confused

Guess what its us again !!!!!!!!!!! lol
We are still having problems getting into chatroom but do not think it has anything to do with our nickname etc.
We just get 'connecting to server' and then nothing, it disconnects itself and keeps trying to connect. This happens sometimes for an hour or so and then for no reason at all we are able to get in.
How strange !!!
