hi everyone,I don't consider myself to be an expert on dieting but 3 years ago I weighed 19 1/2 stone,I started a diet(my own)in mid October and by mid February I had dropped 5 stones,I now weigh 13 stone and am embarking on losing another 1/2 a stone to a stone, the thing is NOT to go for a specific weight,go for a shape you are happy with, you can set a goal weight, reach your target and look in the mirror and not be main thing that people don't realise is that you lose weight in steps, initially you will lose weight but then it seems to stay the same for a while even though you are still dieting( these are called plateau's and thats when people give up ,thinking its not working, but it is ). These plateau's can last 1 maybe 2 weeks but then your weight starts to drop again,I went through 4 or 5 of these plateau's but because I expected them,I didn't give up and virtually giggled every time I got on the scales because the weight just fell off ( I didn't stop drinking either, pissed every Friday and Saturday ).There are lots of experts offering different ways to diet but these are the facts.A man uses about 90g of fat per day( women 80g )even if you're not doing anything strenuous ( just your normal daily routine )so it follows that anything more vigourous you will lose more. If you eat less than 90/80g of fat per day,you have to lose weight and you do, I worked on 17g per day and only ever ate when I was hungry, drinking water fills your stomach which tells your brain its full and solves the problem temporarily(for a few hours). The less fat you eat,the sooner you will lose weight because no matter what your body uses the 90/80g every day. I have gone from overhanging 42 inch waist trousers and a 50 inch chest to not overhanging 34 inch jeans and easily fitting in 42/44 inch chest shirts, Im not perfect or completely happy with my size but I'm getting there,I hope this helps at little for those embarking on their quest, good luck to everyone, persivere and it will happen, expect the plateau's and don't give up when they arrive, its just the body's way of consolidating before another drop in weight, john
I love being tall and slim, to put on weight I would really have to pig out big style ! But everyone has their goals and with enough effort we can reach them !
I spoke to someone who went on a diet with the aid of a nutritionist, and from what iunderstand, the diet was supposed to create a grdual weight loss, that avoided "plateau's".
THe way it worked was to callorie-count, with meals in week one being limited to sometning stupid like 750cals per day for7 days, then in week two, the daily ration would be 1250 per day, then back to 750 cals per day for week three, and on week 4, the limit was raised to 2000cals per day.
Obviously week 4 didn't lose you much weight, but it was supposed to "con" the body out of thinking it was NOT being starved, and stop it from adjusting its metabolism.
Anyone else heard of methods like this, and do they work?
what can I say,I'm 7 stone lighter than I was,and have stayed that way for the best part of 3 years so far having been overweight for about 25 years, all the theories are fine but have they actually done it,some may have, others haven't,its worked for me,so far,do the diet the way you're happy with, lose at a rate you're happy with, thats the best advice I can offer(have lost 3 lbs since my last contribution, just thought i'd mention it) good luck everyone, john,x
Forgive me Father for I have sinned
Today I have eaten a Mars bar and over the weekend consumed wayyyyyyy too many alcoholic beverages
Please send me a personal trainer who will help me how to burn off these said sins (which will, as usual, promptly attatch themselves to my hips)
Amen
Dark retreats from thread cos if you think I'm (a) giving up alcohol in January and (b) posting my weight in this forum, you've got another thing coming! :rude:
I do however accept sympathy shags for fat people. Feel the Burn!
Its very hard to lose. someone told me drinking beer helps. So i keep working at it
Hi guys,
would like to offer you all some encouragement on this one.
This time (exactly) last year was an epiphany for us both.
He had always wanted to learn to ski, so for Xmas I got him some lessons at our local dry slope. He weighed around 16st- and it was bloody hard work! (5'9")
After the first lesson he realised that if he was going to do it properly he needed to be fitter. That weekend we started walking, every other day we'd do a couple of miles part of which included a long hill. I weighed 14.3 and was 5'5".
We did nothing more that first week than cut down a bit on the pastrys, crisps etc, and both lost 5lb.
Next time we went shopping we completely rid our diet of all processed foods. Its tough to start with but within a couple of weeks, when you actually realise how shitty you had been feeling you wonder why youu had been filling yourselves with all that crap. We even lost weight over xmas & new year- we still enjoyed ourselves but kept up the walking & didnt eat to excess. At the start of the year the sudan 1 thing happened- this strenghthened our resolve tenfold.
By mid Jan, he'd lost his first stone. This took me till feb to do- but felt fantastic! By then we'd booked a cheap ski break for this xmas (desperate to keep up the motivation) .
We wanted to continue to get fitter above anything else- so entered a 5k fun run that was happening in late May. This was the best thing we could have done. Before you all recoil at the thought of running- I literally couldnt have run 50 feet if there had been a 9" cock at the end of it.
We started a training regime I this began with 1min run/1 min walk. There were some days-one of which saw me in tears wanting to die there and then, but we got through. My best moment was when we were up to about 18 mins continual running. He'd gone top the gym & dropped me off to do a run/walk session. I walked halfway from Ramsgate to Broadstairs along the clifftops, then started to run. Amazingly, I just kept on running, to Broadstairs and back all the way to Ramsgate. In total 36mins and around 3.5/4miles ish. I could have run further! I was bloody euphoric! He took some convincing- but the fact I was grinning like a cheshire cat made him believe me in the end.
By the 5k time he was down to about 12.9. I was around 12.5. He crossed the line in about 28mins, I did it in 30. That was possibly the proudest we & our family & friends have ever felt! Sadly he stupidly ran up the near vertical slipway & tore hia achillies tendon- so we decided not to run til after the holiday as it has been problematic for the summer the weight loss has tapered off- but its still going.
He has gone from 16st to 11.8. size 36 jeans to 30/32.
Ive gone from 14.3 to 11.9. Size 18 to a 12/14.
He's now at his ideal weight- I want to loose around another stone-ish
We are now actually looking forward to running again in Jan- never thought i'd say that. Meantime he's at the Gym twice a week & is really starting to get a nice shape. I was dragged (kicking & screaming) to Taekwondo by my best mate over the summer- she's now away but im still there twice weekly & bloody loving it! Doing me the world of good & im up for my second grading next week.
Top tips for you all.
*At the very start, take butt naked warts n all pics of yourselves- front back & sides. This will provide you with a way of charting how your body shape changes- take another set a month later.
*each week, weigh out the amount you've lost in spuds in a carrier bag. By tha time youve lost 8/9 pounds or so, holding this weight will be quite impessive- hold it a while & you realise you don't want to be carrying that around again. This feeling gets multplied by 50 when you try to lift a stone of spuds & more!
*Cut out the processed crap!
* Most importantly- find your motivation. Take something up that you need to be fitter for. Be it Skiing, Salsa or sex! You'll feel shed loads better.
Good luck guys- sorry for rambling on but if this helps 1 person feel better & fitter- job done. I was THE no-hoper, now im a runner, martial artist and bloody proud of myself!
you can count me in as well
