It was actually after the Battle of Cressy in France where the English Army were outnumbered 10/1 by the French. The Welsh longbowmen slaughtered the French Army to the extent that Chronicles of the time, gave the casualty figures as several thousand French dead to just around 40 English.
Because the longbowmen proved so effective, thereafter the French decreed that any captured Archers, should have their first two fingers on their right hand removed to prevent them drawing the bow. This lead to the bowmen taunting the French by waving their two fingers at them.
As a footnote, this was also the first European battle where Cannon was used, but to little effect apart from scaring the French horses :P
