Using people's real life names

I normally do this via PM, to the individuals concerned; but I'm noticing it more and more so thought I'd float it in public.
It feels quite timely due to the sharp increase of "forum members" and a definite leaning towards getting the newer members involved, and into munches and socials.
A move I wholeheartedly support.
I've only ever been thanked for bringing this tiny indiscretion to notice, so here goes.
I see more often than I used to, people posting other member's real life names. Particularly in "Thank you" type threads following Munches/Socials/Parties etc.
It's very easy to get carried away and allow the euphoria of meeting people to carry over into your posts the following day.
This can quite easily lead to the "outing" of site users. If not alone, certainly in combination with other snippets of information we inadvertently give away.
I fully realise that some people sign off their own posts with Bob and Alice - that's not where my point is. After all, there are many Bob's that aren't actually called Bob.
Sure; Bob can always PM the person that's posted his name, or a Mod and ask for it to be edited - but Bob might not see the post until a couple of days later; afterhis neighbour/workmate/son has made the connection.
Please - think about it a little.
All the above also applies to posting pictures of people
I usually offer a word of caution to newer memebrs too, about them using their real names.
A very horny member of the site that's not very tall springs to mind wink
I fully agree with you George, I mean Dambuster, and sometimes people do accidently post real names on the forum.
Personally I would never use anyones real name and would always use their posting name. I would always feel that if people are prepared to give out your real names, then what other information would they give out confused
I really do think that people should actually think before they use someones real name, and as I said Rupert, I mean Dambuster, I fully agree with a bit of discretion!
Dammie have you been reading my pm's today :eeek:
I've removed a couple of names from the forum today so it never hurts to remind people to be more careful.
Just because some are happy to have their name or pictures on the forum doesn't mean everyone is.
Excellent post Dammie kiss
We did notice a few wink
I'm sure it wasn't intended, but it's easily done when you meet people for the first time in person.
You spend the evening chatting to people and calling them by there real names and then come back here and post it without thinking.
It's something I noticed this morning and thought exactly the sane thing, whilst I sometimes make referance to people in posts, I normally use only their user name. The only time I post real names if when they are happy for them to be known such as those that sign off at the end of their posts with a real name. biggrin

I have been guilty of this before... & will def watch what I post in the future!!

PMSL - I've just reminded myself of nearly spitting my toys out of the pram one day with a guy (arse) that did it to me rotflmao
I might go wandering down memory lane to see if I can find it.
There were a couple of good points brought up in the thread about how not to post.
I need to do something or I'm gonna bore you all shitless with a short tale of how Number 1 cat has just brought a live blackbird in, as a gift to his new Mum.
Then promptly let the fecker lose in the lounge mad
Cue "dad" to have to catch the fucking thing ! ! ! ! ! !

Why - thank you ladies kiss
I think quite a few people changed their outlook when the 4T shit hit the fan last year, removing pics and such.
I even noticed that some who would normally sign off posts with their name, stopped doing it.

Good ad, Dambuster (But he actualluy said Neil, then edited). So it wasn't aimed at you.
And I never mind being arrogant and sanctimonious if I'm right.

And then - you go on to use my real life name in the fucking forum ! ! !
And don't now bother to go on to say it's in my fucking ad ! ! Or my email address ! ! ! Or in PMs ! ! !
Or anywhere else ! ! !
It's MY fucking choice where or how I publish any of my rl details, as it is anybody elses OWN fucking choice - NOT YOURS ! ! ! !
Does anybody have the slightest fucking idea just how hard I'm slamming my fucking fingers into this keyboard ! ! ! !

I have friends on here I would only call by their username, Dammie, you could only ever be Dammie to us two (and a rather special Dammie at that) although I always call your better half by her real name. I'd never dream of doing it on forum tho'!!!!
Discretion folks is next to manners in our lifestyle
Nice post Dammie
Well i'll tell you this.....if anyone started referring me to my real name on these forums i would bloody go ape shit about it!!!
I am safe on this one..I have trouble remembering forum names never mind RL ones biggrin

You're just worried someone will find out your name is...........Gloria :giggle:
Sorry Gloria, i mean Dammie
Its a very rude thing, something that although we show our real names, not everyone is in the same position as us, some might have high profile jobs, some just don't want there whole family and friends knowing so we respect others wishes,,
for different people different levels of secrecy is required and this we and everyone should respect...
But one thing we would never do....
Use someone's personal name on an open forum.

I agree that sometimes it can be a mistake and that's the generous thing to assume. However, some people do it - as the title of the thread suggests - as name dropping. It can be an attempt to be seen as familiar with the named person - whereas in fact you're potentially wrecking their lives - yup it's as serious as that!
Sorry to inject a serious hard edge on this but it ain't funny!
Dammie - good post sunshine!

smackbottom Doris you should be ashamed of yourself

Its not just the name dropping either ..... confused
I've had a couple of occasions where people have put something quite 'harmless' in a flirty way in thankyou threads etc, that can very easily be misinterpreted into something else.
Its often no trouble at all to read through people's posts and see who did what, who snogged who, who stayed with who etc - all well and good, but there is a very fine line.........
I've also been 'outed' on the forum as being at parties and my participation in them (allegedly) when the 'rule book' actually dictates that what happens in a house/ club/ party/ 4 walls says within those 4 walls (do i have a different rule book to others???)
Indiscretion, and assumption, is the mother of all fuck-ups!
And its very rarely done with any particular intention or 'malice' - sometimes folk just dont think - or they deliberatly name-drop. I'm a big fan of the thankyou threads - i love to read people's comments, and if someone mentions me (cos often I cant remember a bloody thing and it helps me piece together the evening redface lol ) - but, its that fine line we're treading again isnt it. A timely recap of Discretion - nice one Dammy biggrin

If I wanted folk to know my real name I would have used it as a user name thats why I have cleverly disguised it, so anyone who knows my real name please try not to use it on the forums.
cheers
Dave
.........ohh and before I forget, I have trouble the other way round, I just can't help calling folk by their forum name when I'm out socially with them and real names are being used, so it's unlikely I would ever be guilty of useing a real name on here.

absolutely terrible with names........

Thank god its not just me then for I appear to have developed a terrible habit of calling people buy completely the wrong name redface even though I know their names perfectly well. All I can put it down to is working long hours and being under a lot of stress. But excuses aside it's created a couple of uncomfortable moments where I’ve wanted the ground to swallow me up. confused
Discretion is a must with names as peeps can check on your profile the postcode & could quite easily see if they are your neighbours or not!
