I have 3 e-mail accts and have received infected mail on 2 of them, fortunately my firewall and mail software have prevented a virus take care about what you open, but theres a go link at the top of this page to a free firewall download, try that if you dont already have 1 installrd on your machine.

Mmmmmmmmm Mr tongue I'd like to know when Im gonna get a whippin from your tongue that avatar drives me nuts  Sue.
Sorry for hijackin didnt mean it honest hope you sort the virus thingy out biggrin

It is very likely that someone (or a number of people) who has your email addresses in their address book has got a virus. Due to the way the latest viruses spoof the "from address" you will be receiving the notifications and quite a few of them at that (especially if it a Spammer who has the virus).
It is not something to worry about provided you update your virus checker daily.

I've also been getting quite a few suspicious things through. The worst was a bunch of mails with attachments (normally gif or rtf), but then when you looked carefully they were actually or or (nasty).
One I remember quite clearly was from and contained a file ___.exe
Why do people do this mad
I once received a virus which caused AOL to suspend our account. Apparently this virus caused one of our user accounts to send this virus out to 200 email adresses in the space of half an hour
After phoning AOL to rip them a new one for `suspending our account due to breaking TOS`, and not being nice enough to send a warning email first, we established it was a virus..........
I was so embarrassed. redface
That`s the thing with these viruses, once they hit someone with many email adresses in their address book, they go forth and multiply. Unfortunately they can flourish between members on community forums! I had a hell of a job explaining to one member of a forum that another member hadn`t purposely tried to sabotage their computer, it wasn`t pretty!

The limit on my PC ablilities is being able to type. That's it. I keep on recieving these mailerdaemon returned thingies in my inbox which leads me to suspect that perhaps I am the one sending the viruses. But, my anti-virus shows that I have none - so maybe it's aol playing tricks. dunno
I need help too!
Someone... please... ?
Which Virus checker do you use? Unfortunately some viruses bugger up other parts of your system which doesn`t get fixed just by removing the virus. I find running a Windows Update can sometimes fix this updating some of the files which have been lost. One virus I`ve had would shutdown my abilty to cut and paste, kill my modem drivers, and make links unworkable. If I was able to run an update before it took my modems out, and after I removed the virus, I`d be ok, all would be fixed!

Every week I run Norton anti-virus. I press and button and it does its work. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject! banghead
Ok, well I`m not saying Norton is no good, it`s just that I am unfamiliar with it. If you try downloading AVG, and run an update before you test your PC, you should get the virus if there is one. Sometimes the update wont run if their server is busy, in which case you should try later. A virus programme is only as good as it`s update.
Give it a go, and you could try some of the online scans as well, they can be pretty good. I`ll see if I can dig up a link for you smile

I use AVG as well and have found it to be very good,it can make other progs a bit unstable when its running though.
Urgh, that is so true! The amount of times I`ve switched off a scan because I`ve been busy, then have forgotten to run it afterwards, not good! I tend to run it when I go to bed now.

I do not know NAV that well, but make sure you are downloading the latest signature update from them on a regular basis and before doing a full scan.

Yea Venus, I was getting this too a few weeks ago, I think they were just junk mail as I could find no evidence of a virus, dont use Outlook (only Web), could not find anything in my sent box. I think this was a scan to try and get you to open an attachment.
If JQL is around... Any comment?
Here is a good recource if a virus takes out your Virus programme (I had one which disabled the Update facility on AVG).
These are online scans

It`s funny how easy I cope with Viruses now, the first time I ever became infected, I was mortified, I felt so unclean! Now I have a teen who is often infecting us, I am well on the ball! My PC is like Fort Nox now!

Up to date anti-virus software is critical, however it's not the whole solution. The vendors inevitably lag behind the virus writers - it takes some time between a new virus being discovered "in the wild" and the vendors adding that virus to their software.
If you're running Outlook Express, ditch it. It's full of security holes and Microsoft ceased providing any updates some time ago, as it's a free product and they make no revenue from it. I run the full version of Outlook (and keep it up to date) and it does a pretty good job of quarantining viruses and preventing the user running them.
Hi peeps,
The latest and I must a very annoying virus which is doing the rounds is the skynet virus. This little thing searches web pages as well as address books to find email address to send itself to.
This is why one address may be getting lots of emails becaus eit may be located on more websites that have been scanned. If you hang around long enough, this virus may send you an email from yourself. Confusing I know but that is how it is working. Spoofing the too and the from.
I have found this little program, completely free to downlaod and use, and it helps clean the registry of your system. This is something virus scanners do not do. This program mainly finds spyware but it is very useful for removing things like trojans and other internet bound programs.

I'll post this in the firewall postings too as it is a very good program.
Blimey! - long time no see mattmoleman - welcome back! Just out of hibernation?
Good idea to post in the sticky thread as well - thanks.
Fred
Why thank you Fred.
Not quite hibernation but something close.
I could of done with some of your help too, while I was gone. A friends computer had over 300 (yes that is right) different viruses. Not to mention several hackers who had complete access to her computer and broadband connection. The slime balls!!!!
Managed to sort most of it out (every time tried to connect to the internet the hackers would put every virus back onto her computer), just as I prevented any more attacks from these tw*ts (pardon my french) the bloody power button/jumper cable failed. Now her computer won't switch on. Ah well, I said to myself. And handed it over to a computer repair man as I relaxed in bed. Out of my hands now.
It is good to see everything is still like a mad house although there are a fair few more people posting now. Looks like I will have to try and read to catch up the score, unless you want to give a short and sweet version that is!?

Just looked at your profile and seen you have not been around for 2 months....... rolleyes
No way that there is a short explanation of what has gone on in that time - ever! lol  Just the usual banter - dummy spitting - serious debate - frivolity - piss taking and comings and goings.
However you will need a new chip card to get into the GFZ now it was extended and redecorated 2 weeks ago and new security added to keep out the girlies. I'll send you the card - Sarge will frisk you for bugs before he gives you your pin number!
Fred
Bi-eck, security really has been turned up a notch. I remember the days when the doors were never closed and women folk could come and go as they pleased. I do like the extensive catalogue of playboys under the chair in the GFZ though. That is a nice touch.
Looks like I will have to start reading and try and catch up on the banter. Well after watching the match atleast. Come on you Chelsea. (I just don't like Arsenal).
Have to go now, the pub is a calling me.

Welcome back mattmoleman - glad to see you survived the winter, it's a dodgy time for animals that hibernate isn't it, all too many go to sleep and never wake up  . I remember seeing that on Blue Peter when I was young, it was very sad when the tortoise died in it's sleep sad . Very glad that you have lived to romp for another spring lol
Thanks for the welcome Blue, very much appreciated.
I must admit I did cheat when I was hibernating. I was going out with a lovely sheep at the time. She kept me nice and warm and I was always eating :P
Did the tortoise really die in Blue Peter? Maybe it just retired and quit his show business life?

Lazy animals them ones. Mind you given half a chance I would gladly stay in bed all winter (if it was being shared with somebody anyway)!
I must say, congrats on your new Silkies page. Very pink and pretty. I'm sure everybody is looking forward to any new photos or victims that you may have in store.

Hey guys,
Dont worry about the viruses in the e-mails. Its a common worm which really doesnt affect you unless you:
1) Open the attachment, usually with a daft name, a silly comment in the email and about 27-35k in size
2)Or your ISP doesnt block viruses... however, most do now.
Ok it is highly annoying that you keep getting them.
It is a worm which resides in web pages as someone has already commented on. Nothing much you cand do about it really.
Many of you have said use Norton Antivirus or AVG. Both to be quite honest are very very poor anti-virus software.
If you want Norton, try and get hold of the Corporate version. It doesnt use memory and doesnt play around with things in Windows behind the scenes. But if you want FULL protection go and get this:
F-Secure -
Its the No.1 Antivirus Software on the market. Very very powerful and very secure.
Hope this helps
Only just caught this thread, so maybe a bit late in the day, but a number of people in the chatroom ( me included ) are concerned that we only started receiving the dodgy viral attachments on "Hey I saw your profile" from "HotChick" or "FitBabe" type emails etc AFTER posting an ad here!!?? the paypal virus only received on that account too, and i've got 4 accounts in use at the moment.
Is it at all possible someones hijacked the site? The email account i'm receiving them on is ONLY used for the SH ad, which i've now removed, and surpisingly enough, i'm getting a LOT less of 'em!!!! HHHMMMMMM!!!!
I can understand your concerns Neil, but with what I stated ealier, it is a worm that is reading email addresses off different web sites. It really doesn't matter what web site your email maybe posted on. The worm will scan the any web pages it can find. Unfortunatly due to this site having an adult (not meant to be a joke) nature then viruses will tend to go to these type of sites first. This will also scan all kinds of web pages too though, so it is not restricted to adult content pages.
Neil, once your email has been found then chances are it will remain in that worms address list. So no, nobody will of hijacked this site unless you start getting email directly from the real SH email addresses.
I believe the anonymous email addresses on the photo adds may be safe because it has to go through SH first.
As you probably know. The subject, attachments names and senders can change to things that you may find enticing to open.
DjStylus. Viruses, worms and trojans dono't always need an attachment to open. There is a trend to send html pages as an email which can also contain the code to give yo the virus. Usually in the form of a cookie or a jsp. It will not take long for this virus to adabt and start using this method so whenever you open the email it will run on your computer.
Norton, AVG, Panda and Mcafee are usually the best and most upto date virus removers and protectors. It is the firewalls that you will need to stop downloading viruses from the net. Also the ability to setup email scanning yourself and not just scan certain files without heauristics scanning enabled.
I don't believe any company can claim to be the NUMBER 1 Antivirus Software. Unless they are a company who actually develops viruses just so they know how to clean them before the other companies. It is usually a false claim when companies say that (because if you look carefully you will notice a lot more will too). Just use what you are more familiar with and make sure it is always upto date.
You may want to explain what the f-secure product you use and why it is a good product on the firewalls and viruses sticky thread. It is always good to be informed of other products out there.

MATT!!! lol Hello again and welcome back.
I update Sophos daily, got a route and all the bits I need and yet I STILL caught this ruddy cold - why didn't any of my expensive gadgety things pick up and stop that virus??
Disgruntled in Newcastle!

Cheers Jags. T's always good to hear from you, even if you do spray snot all over everybody. Yuk.
I think you have the virus because you don't wear enough clothing.
Did I really say that?
What I meant to say was, you need to stay in bed and keep nice and warm with lots of men to you becon call. Cold or not I'm sure you could get somebody at short notice to hand you a cup of cocoa.
How did you get it Jags? Email or web site? Which is it you have?
Sex God
Matt - I don't spray snot over everyone, I use a proper hankerchief to catch it all!!
Now a man at my beck and call whilst I lounge around in bed today would be good - need some shopping done, the wireless retuned, the whistle on my kettle cleaned cos it's stopped whistling and the dishes put away!
Ssssssssssiiiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggggggh!!
So, is Sophos any good? It's used throughout the City network here which is why I have it. Nothing in , nothing out!

Of course you don't Jags. How silly of me to say such a thing.
I have heard good things about Sophos but alas it is not a firewall. Firewalls tend to work hand in hand with virus scanners to help protect your computer.
The Sophos can however disinfect your computer fine. That is if you still have the nasty little bug. I am purely guessing that this is the virus you may have. There is a removal tool for a quick download and very easy to use.

If you know the name of the virus then please find the relevant tool from this page.

I hope you feel better soon Jags. We can't have you easter eggs go to waste now can we.

So.. If I stick my finger in the USB port and run the disinfection programme it will suck all the snot out of me and take away the common cold virus too???
OK.. front or back USB??? lol
