Thought it was a great film but would like to have seen more of the 'action' of the fight between the armed forces and the aliens. If it hadn't been for a couple of fighting scenes they could have renamed it "What the public was doing whilst the War of The Worlds was going on". Maybe that's how the book was written? ......... I dunno coz in my ignorance I'll have to admit that I've never read it. redface
A bit harsh perhaps coz it was a very good film ............. the "War" element just seemed to be missing for me though.
Steve

There was a short prog on it this afternoon and Spielberg says that this was intentional, he wanted to focus on the public reactions and Tom Cruise's family in particular rather than the military response, the military only being there if they happened to interact with the Cruise family.
Just to follow on from what you said....these kind of films have always been done from the military's point of view, just forget that it's Tom Cruise playing the average joe for a second and you could imagine yourself in the part and wonder if you would do what he does....
having grown up listening to the record and watching the 50's film, I'm really looking forward to see if it still has the old menace or if it's another cgi no plot, too much action fest!
GT and I played hooky yesterday afternoon and saw the showing... The film is FANTASTIC and I don't often say that... will give it 9.5 out of 10... the half point deducted for the ending. I'd have been more brutal but then that's me... Prolly American's are too soft when it comes down to family... smile
Special effects are superb with suspense played well. Tom Cruise acts his socks off in this movie and I'm one of those rare females who's bits don't tingle when he is on the screen... now if we were talking about George Clooney or Brad Pitt...
The acting award has to go to the actress who plays Cruise's daughter... (round of applause)!
I also thought it was fantastic film. Did exactly what it said on the tin for me.
Thought it was a little scary for kids though, when I went to see it there was a little girl of around 8 and she seemed petrified.
Parents today eh wont smack their kids but will scare the living daylights out of them rolleyes
I am planning on seeing the war of the worlds soon so please dont tell me what happens.
Has anyone seen the original, it was fab, seen it on channel 5 on sat.
The effects where pretty good for a film made in early 60's
