For the first time in my life I've made a stew! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Yep, went out and bought the stewing steak, leeks, carrots, taties, onions, big stainless steel pot, etc., and, YES, I did put red wine and some garlic in too.
It was Kitty's idea as she thinks I shouldn't eat the chilli con carne and the Lasagne (that she made for me last weekend) all the time.
Now it's all bubbling away nicely and smelling yummy.
Who's coming to dinner with me tonight then? dunno
biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

PS Will that do Steph? wink wink
  I'm making stew today for the first time in well over a year! Must be the weather, proper comfort food smile
Errrm Would that be Silver Service ES
I'm doing sausage and mash. Stew is on the Advanced Module for Beginners - I'm on the Intermediate Module for Improvers!
Now go stir it up ES - you near me by any chance? A layby on the northern end of the A1/Western Bypass would be great!!

He hee! lol lol lol No, not this time. It's gonna be ladle some into a bowl, dunk bread in it and slurp it off a spoon (silver spoon though!).
I'm gonna sit back after, chill out and work on my cunning plan to enlarge my Empire of Accredited laybys wink wink
:rascal: :rascal:

Yeah, I bought a slow cooker last winter, thinking it'd revolutionise my life to come home to slow cooked stew :P . But I used it once and it was all thin and watery and not that nice to be honest with you so now it's under my sink gathering fluff...

Well a bowl and bread works for us, but I'm pretty evil when it comes to stews........ I've also been known to add vinegar and salad cream to my bowl

I love to cook. I think that food and eating are one of the most sensual things.
So any girls/ladies or even couples that would like me to do a dinner party or a lunch thing. I'm your man.
it's a great ice-breaker, get to know someone.
I can occasionaly accomodate so you won't even have to wash-up later..
I am a professional, (not a professional cook) healthy, fit, athletic, handsome !! intelligent , witty (that's open to opinion...one mans' wit is another man's twit) italian guy 38 yrs old in Nottingham
Home made pastas, earthy heartwarming soups, creative salads ! sensual puddings!
No red meat. !
So get your bookings in early to avoid disappointment

Veneziano is that a thinly disguised ad that should be in the LMU confused rolleyes
I can cook but it annoys me that I spend 3 hours cooking something that takes 20 minutes to eat and 40 minute to clear away :eeek:

Arr But hey the joys of watching some one eat and enjoy the very thing you have been slavee-ring over. That in itself sshould make your cooking blues disappear.

I'm cooking lunch for my guests today... it was a bit of a struggle to finally arrive at something they both like but we got there. Trouble is, I've been in the garden and try as I might I just can't find any toads. I wonder if they'd like a frog-in-the-hole?
(Come to think of it, she probably would... such is the quality of the company I keep these days. lol )
Sod it, I'll do jacket potatoes with sombreros on and call it El Spudo-U-Like

Well, it's a fair exchange. She cooks for me and I eat. I cook for her and she eats! (Now I can cook, that is) smile smile

I am glad i am not the only person with a slow cooker in the cupboard gathering fluff.
And i thought it would transform me into a domestic goddess. confused
Ours doesn't get used as regularly as it might, but it still sees a reasonable amount of service.
You do need to adapt recipes somewhat for the slow cooker, I generally brown meat and soften onions in a frying pan to start with and either add the chopped root veg to that for a bit or par-boil it. Potatoes need to be pre-cooked, though tinned new potatoes work very well. To give the liquid a bit of body and flavour you can add a tin of chopped tomatoes or a tin of pureed chestnuts (very good with shin of beef and lots of carrots, parsnips and mushrooms).
I have also been known to add Bisto an hour or two before it's finished cooking. Not exactly haute cuisine, but very useful nontheless.
Stews.............. happy memories of when I was single........... Would make up a huge mincemeat stew, with tatties, peas, carrots, ............... cook it on a sunday, then just reheat it all week........ and yes it used to sit in the pan on the cooker all week
By the middle of the week it sometimes needed some more veggies, and some stock

I just used the slow cooker last night. I threw softened onions in with some thinnly sliced pork, 2 sliced apples, sliced carrots and sliced potatoes. Add a couple of inches of water, and some chicken stock powder. When it's cooked, I add some gravy powder mix to thicken it. Beautiful.....
The trick to slow cookers is to cut things up smallish and all around the same size, then use gravy powder to finish. I'll try the tinned potatoes and chestnut idea next time. Thanks for that DP!
