Respectfully suggests "knitting", its a barsteward to get the hang of, every now and then you drop a stitch and just when you think youve mastered it someone changes the pattern.

This is something that was mentioned in passing in the "hardened swinger" thread, and it peaked my curiosity. Any purists among us care to explain this to me?

Ah the purist..... your not playing in my gang. What a load of old tosh
1. One that swings: a good swinger of baseball bats.
2. Slang
a. A person who actively seeks excitement and moves with the latest trends.
b. A person who engages freely in promiscuous sex.
c. A member of a couple, especially a married couple, who exchanges sexual partners.
Single people dont swing.
They do however have sex.
Wikipedia, the greatest knowledge known to man, says:
Swinging or partner swappingis a non-monogamous behavior, in which both partners in a committed relationship agree, as a couple, for both partnersto engage in sexual activities with other couples as a recreational or social activity.
Indeed every reference I can find refers to swinging as being from a consenting couple, therefore what are singles doing? Pushing from behind to give a better swing I think!
1. swinger
A person who dates/sleeps with multiple people at the same time.
"you seein' someone?"
"im seein a few people, i guess you could say"
"oh, so you're a swinger?"
2. swinger
A married person who enjoys swapping spouses with another married couple.
Dick and Jane are swingers; last weekend, they swapped spouses with the neighbors for a sexual experience.

A person who has un-planned sexual encounters with numerous people who they are not dating and do not intend to date.
A person can be a swinger while single and faithful while in a relationship.
On the other hand, there are some people who continue to swing even while in relationships.
Person1- 'The other night I hooked up with 3 different men/women.'
Person2- 'That's disgusting, you filthy swinger.'
Person3- 'Sounds like good times! I wish I were a swinger!'
4. swinger
Swingers can be couples (married or not) or singles.

They have a sexually free spirit. Couples tend to be in love with each other, and only "share" each other sexually with others. Sometimes this means "swapping wives" sometimes it means "group sex".
Single swingers generally despise the dating process and would rather meet at swinger gatherings where it is acceptable and in some cases expected that sex can/will occur on the spot with whomever they meet and feel attracted to.
Tom and Jane go to a party where they meet Gary and Nancy. They go to a room as a group for sex.
Tom and Jane go to a party where they meet Gary and Nancy. They go to seperate rooms: Tom takes Nancy and Gary takes Jane for sex.
Melissa goes to a swinger party by herself. Melissa meets John and Tracy (a couple) at the party. melissa, John and Tracy all end up in a room together for sex.

To say that in a scenario where a couple are having sex with a single, the couple are swinging but the single is not, is nonsense. They are all engaging in exactly the same sexual activity.
It's back to "labels" again!

I would have expected a "Godlike" poster like you to have seen it sorry. No offence meant. It makes good reading and is relevant to this thread....
Hey, no offence taken. It's the sort of thread I wouldn't bother reading as I have no interest in "labels".
What Jed and Sasha said sums it up for us...
The definition has expanded to include a whole range of things that the scene itself now embraces.
We have said this before, the only person who really defines what the word means to you, is you.
If your a couple who only plays with other couples and that's the way you see it fine and good, though we doubt few couples will turn down a bisexual single female for a night.
If anything The Scene now is more diverse than it ever was and that can only be a good thing in the long run.

The problem is the definition has expanded to who? If you tell someone in the street you are a swinger without elaberating they will most likely think you swap partners in a hotel room or go to a party and put keys in bowl dunno I am fairly certain that most people who are not involved in swinging will think that swinging is male female couples swapping partners. For me personally that is what swinging is I dont have a problem with that definition. On occasions we go to hotel rooms and swap partners with other couples, I call that swinging. We go to clubs and do various things, I dont call that swinging. It is what ever it is i.e. having a threesome or taking part in an orgy I dont really see that swinging acurately describes all of those activities.
There is one person who we know who I am quite certain would be interested in what we do. I did think once about telling them and how I would explain it and one thing I was certain on was I would not call it swinging. I would have gone along the line of "We attend sex parties where there are voyeurs, natuists, swingers, singles etc.

You are dead right.
