Why do people have derogatory names for women who like sex?

Sorry if this is something that's been talked about in the past (which no doubt it has) but I'm starting to get sick of my mates referring to certain girls as slags (to use much better terminology than them as they used sp**k buckets etc) when they try and get a shag every weekend. This is something which most of my mates and myself try to do every other weekend but "it's ok for lads". This only especially annoyed me recently as one of the girls they were referring to was a good friend of mine and fine this has been the case for years and no doubt many femanists have said the same for years but is this right? I know this used to be the norm in my early school days when things were a bit more prudish but aren't we in 2007 now? OK she might enjoy having sex but she's a totally respectable girl, well off and very intellegent and doesn't deserve being slagged off like that as I said in a round about way when falling out with a mate on Wednesday.
Not really wanting any replies to this or any chat but I just needed to vent myself. Sorry to polute your board with my rantings.

People who talk about others in this way, hate it when someone they know(wife,mother,sister) are called these names. So it amazes me why they do it in the first place.

damn, serendipity you got in before me. Intelligence, finances etc do not mean that you are any more entitled to have a choice in her sex life.
There is an expectation in this society that women wait for their men. That is why women who choose not to have relationships with a man, must be ugly, frigid, lesbian or as was told to me recently a "man hating lesbo"
Men, generally, are allowed choices and women are supposed to take what is given. (I know this is a generalisation and I don't want to offend)
When a woman expresses choices, particulary with regards to sex, then there must be something fundementally wrong with her intellect, her hygiene, mental health, etc etc.
But likewise the names only hurt if you let them. Simple but true.

Some men are like this because they are threatened by strong independant women,just the same when a woman says to some twat who chats her up...and she says "not a chance".......his reply will always be slag or fucking lesbian!.......the way it goes is a girl goes out on a Saturday night on the pull......she is more than likely to get lucky....the same does not go for a guy...and some just don't like the idea that its a woman that can pick and choose!

I think it is all down to respect.
In the hetro vanilla world as is here, men who are seeking women for sex greatly out number them, and so have far less choice or availability. Most men can feel vulnerable and insecure, and added to that alcohol or worse, then rejection is a bitter pill to swallow.
Also the mates in work / pub banter is just men puffing their manly chests out and strutting their stuff.
Now, put them in a room full of women and see how many comments are made then!!
Because, on the one hand, you have the- "oh she must be a lesbian" with mates, to ...not a fooking peep out of him.
Why, because men like that are shallow,pathetic and spineless bastards who because of their own insecurities and small dicks have to be the big I am in front of pals.
So when one of these twats, ends up with a lovely girl, marries her and never calls her a slag because he loves her, oh yeah and forgets that she had sex before she met him. He's just a fookin hypocritic twat.

Ok, so I made a couple of folk laugh, and that's ok. But, the reality of such remarks unless you do have Skin like a rhino, is that they can be hurtfull, not to mention unjust and as 36 pointed out Prejudicial!
I think it does have something to do with being brought up with respect and manners.

Quite true Arg, such remarks are indeed unjust and predjudicial-but they will only become hurtful if you actually give a damn about what the people who say them think. I don't. I realise that there may be women who are indeed hurt by some stupid comment made by a mindless twat, what I would say to them is these people are not worth it ;)
