Not always. I've seen spellchecker come up with entirely the wrong words for some of my friends spellings.

No, because a dyslexic wont necessarily see the mistake or the correct word to replace it with.
With regards to the lack of apostrophes in chatroom titles, I believe the chat software doesn't recognize punctuation in room titles.

You are not alone - boring and pedantic is not a bad thing!

Even when people talk at socials that they are scared to make a post on the forum in case somebody corrects their grammar, spelling or punctuation dunno
Yes, even then. Presumably those same people had to send a PM or ask on a thread for an invitation to the social. Unless the organiser is psychic, of course. What if the organiser of a social is a spelling/grammar/punctuation pedant? Do people not apply?
Like Kaz said, bit of a lame excuse really.
I don't use the spell check feature on here, but with all outgoing personal and business emails I have the spell check feature set to automatically check all my mails before they are sent. I consider myself a fairly competent speller, but for me it is about a level of professionalism which I feel would be compromised if I send out messages with words spelt wrongly. That's why I do get a bit annoyed by signs and official communication with errors in them - just shows a real sloppiness, in my opinion.
Bad spelling isn't a hugely massive issue for me - I appreciate that some people (for many reasons) cannot spell. On a forum like this, it isn't a major turn-off for me if someone spells something wrongly and I probably don't notice or certainly don't judge someone as a result of their spelling ability.
If I get a message that is pretty much unreadable because of very poor grammar or textspeak-style words however, then that is slightly more of an issue for me. I know that levels of written communication and people's ability to communicate verbally don't always tally, but again it is more about the impression that it sends. I'd like to think that someone had made an effort with their initial communication and writing stuff like "wiv" and "ov" and "hun" is a sure fire way to make me think we wouldn't get on.
But hey, we all have our preferences I guess... dunno

It does very funny things with punctuation on here generally confused
I think there is a big difference in being lazy and making the effort and not being able to spell.
I was 30/31 before I knew the difference between their and there or wives and wifes, plus may other words. My punctuation was non-exsistant and my ability to learn was shockingly bad. However, I found a different way of learning as an adult because I was treated different in college than I was in school.
Being the class thicko at school was never pleasant rolleyes
I was also scared of posting on the forum for a few months after I joined because I knew there would often be mistakes to be found in what I type. It took a lot of courage for me to start posting and I look back at posts now and see mistakes but its tough luck as long as I enjoy posting, I will biggrin
So like Nola says, I can forgive the odd mistake but unreadable is a massive turn off confused

What about the 'have' and 'of' syndrome. As in I could of done something, instead of I could have done something - drives me mad.

Me too. I can understand where it comes from - it sounds like 'could of' when you say it - but it is simply the wrong word. And once someone has realised it, there is no reason to write it that way again.
I think could of comes from the way people speak. People will say I could've done it but write it as could of.
I don't think English is taught these days as it was in my day (grabs zimmer frame).
The other thing that annoys me is the way lots of people sound 'th' as 'f' as in fink instead of think.
I am on my soap box now lol

One thing I do remember from school is being told that sentences should not start with the word the? So should it read "Another thing that annoys me"?

That's odd - one of the first sentences many learn to read is 'The cat sat on the mat'. dunno
I think people are often told never to end a sentence with a preposition (to, in, from, with etc) But that is a nonsense - a hangover from the idea that English takes its rules from Latin. But Latin and English are structured totally differently so sentences can end with prepostions. And you can split infinitives too - so 'to boldly go' is ok. Rules like that are total language snobbery - dinosaurs who put too much value on a 'Classical Education' will repeat them until they are blue in the face - they are still irrelevant. biggrin
I agree that English isn't taught nowadays - but then it wasn't much better in my day (1960-70's - borrows Goldsmith's Zimmer). I learned most of my grammar rules from my Mum.
The one question i have..
What is proper english ??????

Yes you are right, as there are lots of things that annoy me, so 'the other thing' makes it sound as if that's my completed list, which it certainly isn't. lol

This one drives me insane too. Hubby does it, and I've tried for years to get him to stop. His nan tried her best too when he was growing up. We've now come to realise that he quite simply cannot hear a difference. Try as we might- and I've had linguists help- he cant hear the differing sounds. Such is life.
As for the "could of" thing, this is one I pointed out to a dyslexic mate recently when she updated her facebook status. She had no idea that she was abbreviating "should have."
I spell exactly what I mean too................:karaoke:

It's like when you speak proper, like what we do lol
There are a couple of things I notice. One is that people with similar language abilities get along quite happily to each other.
The other is that whenever a debate starts to develop there is a marked escalation in the use of language. With people looking for dictionary definitions, and turning in into mini authors and the like. Showing that there are some hidden passions and talents out there. Great stuff.

How many does there have to be?
Surely it should be "... is some hidden passion and talent.." in this context?

rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
Well proper english is how we speak and write in our own way...
Well i know a few people who say i dont speak proper english, but hey it is the way i have spoken since i was able to.
So i sometimes write the way i speak and i know it isn't proper english,
if we all spoke or wrote proper english it would be boring, and we wouldnt have a thread like this biggrin:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
