Following on from xxdevil69's grammar question, what's your most disliked misuse of a word in everyday emails and forum posts?
Mine is "loose" when the writer means "lose"
Lose - When will I lose my sex drive?
Loose - The lead broke so the dog is loose.

The ellipsis isn't the same as a full stop and does not require a capital letter after it. :wink:

i havnt got a clue what your going on about, please explain gently and remember im dyslexic, we dont do rules!, grammar or otherwise!!!
I dont proclaim to be a fantastic speller and i like to think i normally use the correct words in the correct order but one thing that cheeses me off is when people say things like
'I won him at tennis'
No you mean you beat him at tennis, or i won our game of tennis.
Or 'i borrowed him my bike', no you mean you lent it to him or he borrowed it
Also when people add their own letters into place names for example,
Birmingham - i have heard so many people call it Birningham
And why to people insist on calling Shrewsbury bloody Shrowsbury - and the worst one by far is the name used by some of the towns residents who call it Shoesbury :x :x :x

There were 3 minor errors in your post, common ones that are often just down to lazy typing, not capitalising I (twice) and missing the apostrophe from I'm is all, as I said I should stop correcting, because someone's going to correct me... I was just being silly!

I'm with you on most of those 7, but who are we to tell locals how to pronounce their town name? Locally we have Rugeley, the locals call it Rudgley, that's their perogative, surely. Would you tell a New Yorker that his City and State are not called New Yoik? What about Gateshead, would you tell a local it wasn't "Gyatesed-lyke"? Just to pick two. "Stop it, it's not Mumbai (sp?), it's Bombay!"

When I first arrived in this country it did my head in how a lot of people use the word *me* inapproriately.

I'd think to myself, bloody English...can't even use their own language correctly. But then I realised something. You English may not always use english correctly, but when you don't it's more often than not so much more colourful than if you had. Kinda like with dialects, it's the flavour of your englishness. :P

regarding misuse of words, according to my payslip last month I received an increment.

Not exactly used in written form, but the word I hate and is most often used incorrectly is *think*.
How many people do you hear on a daily basis, using *think* when they actually mean *thing* ie somethink instead of something
My mother in law is the worst offender and although both Jon and I have pointed out her mistake kindly and sensitively, she still uses it all the time

Like it or not textspeak is a progression,it exsists now and expresses something of value to those who use it.I refused to have a mobile phone until 2 years life is now totally different because of it.
Language seems so complex and everchanging,and the speed of its evolution nowadays is we are with a form of communication here in the internet that barely exsisted to the majority of us a decade ago.I'd never even heard of the information superhighway then.
I think its only a bit off when you see the zero effort in the typical male I need a shag lower case type post. But that isn't aimed at me is it?(Well..I hope not!)

I must say I always thought is was pronounced "Shrowsbury", the Shrew bit being a bit like the sew in sewing as opposed to the sow in sowing, (if I'm making any sense). Anyway, no sillier than Slough. One can get into awful trouble extending this thread into place names. I'm not saying you're wrong by the way, (I haven't a clue), just what we were taught 50 miles away from the place when growing up.

Are you from the old colonies, a REAL foreigner, or the daughter of an ex. pat.? My "foreign" nephews speak much more correct English than their UK counterparts.
Many years ago I also went out with a girl who used "me" at the end of a statement as in, "I'm going home me". I thought it was a quirky charm then, but I was testosterone driven and in love for at least a week.

Yes but like it or not it is definitely dumbing down isn't it? I do text occasionally and I do sent B4U and stuff when appropriate, but I hope I never use it outside the medium BTW. (oops).

Language is constantly evolving...the phrase "dumbing down" being an example. Modern literature would seem "dumbed down" to a Victorian reader since there are rarely paragraph-long, complex sentences written today outside of scientific journals. And Chaucer in the original........
Textspeak has a useful function in the immediacy of modern written communication. It's spillover into other areas is inevitable. Given a choice between second rate Victorian writing and second rate textspeak I would go for the textspeak every time - it's far easier to understand.

I am as you know slightly dyslexic myself. I dont really have a problem with grammer in posts ,what I do find a bit hard to deal with is unneccessary bad language.
Sometimes it is neccessary and can be funny or thought provoking but just to use it often out of context just seems a bit off
