wow what a sad post. happy endings all round though it seems. I too am on this site to try and forget, perhaps it should be renamed 'foriegn legion' the love of my life dumped me without warning or reason and wont even speak to me about it so my world is crap at the moment. I hope i end up feeling as posetive as the contributers to this thread although I dont hold out much hope at the moment

Racer, I really hope it all works out for you soon. I'm sure most of us here have been in the same position, I certainly have lots of times.
But though you may not feel it at the moment, whats been said before in this thread is that its how you deal with what happens to you that makes the difference. Whats more the people here can really help you feel better about yourself biggrin

Speaking of quotes, does 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you' translate into 'Shag and be shagged' in Swinginese? wink

Good to see everyone being so positive biggrin
I've thought for a long time that we're masters of our own destiny. I don't mean we can control what happens but we can control our responses and attitudes to events and situations - sometimes its a very difficult thing to learn.
I've just had a very hard year, both personally and professionally. But business is now poised on the brink of huge success and although there are things I would change in my personal life I feel that will be resolved in time.
I've not really changed inside myself, and I've always had quite a lot of self confidence and belief but been a bit reserved. The inner me is much more in evidence now, the passion I have for life is more externalised and I can now speak in public with much more fluency and conviction (in fact it gives me quite a buzz instead of being nerve-wracking).
So well done one and all, and best wishes for your continuing success

This isn't really a surprise - its programmed into us as part of the survival instinct. Not necessarily for ourselves but for our genes.

I agree that it's no surprise. But at the end of the day it's not much good as a survival instinct, is it? It's the reason that wars start and take so long to fizzle out, and unless we evolve beyond it, its end result is the death of our species.
You may well be right, but I like to take a more positive view. The very fact that we have this discussion, and that we do wrestle with this sort of issue, is a sign of hope.
But the point I was making is that the selfish gene theory is about ensuring your own genes have a better chance of survival than someone elses. Survival instinct only really applies to the individual, its not a species imperative. For example, there are no real winners in war, there are survivors.
So though I don't disagree with you, I think that over-population is a greater threat to the species than war is. And often war is caused by the friction caused by a population's environment no longer being able to sustain the number of individuals in it.

Its been termed 'the selfish gene' - if there's someone we love theres a good chance they carry some of the same genetic code as ourselves because we are related. Or, there's a chance that will happen in the future through children.
There's lots of research been done into the behaviour of people based on genetic relationships; the closer someone is related to you the more you will do or risk for that person, your children being the best example of survival of your gene line.
Its an impossible situation, there is no right answer and in the end instinct is likely to overcome rationalising the choice anyway.
Misschief. That's a harrowing nightmare, I've had similar ones involving my children too, they are extremely upsetting and disturbing :therethere:

However, (switches to pedant mode) they aren't bulbs, they are correctly known as lamps.
I know this after having been flamed and shamed in public by professional lamp pedants in the lighting trade redface
And of course you have to consider that you must use the correct cap, and of course screw in the appropriate spot wink
Sorry, its Friday afternoon bad pun time surprisedops:

I was 14 too, seems I'm in good company biggrin
Although its mostly the girls who were a similar age it seems.
In my first few weeks at college there was a girl there who, in conversation about such things, revealed that she was still a virgin. I couldn't believe and asked why and said she didn't know what she was missing.
A year or so later she reminded me of the conversation and said she found a man that very night and pandora's box was opened :D
Its amazing how pwerful words can be...

I've just been reminded of the song "Love is a Stranger" by the Eurhythmics and it occurred to me thats its a great anthem for dogging.
So as a light hearted game how about using the first two lines and then keep adding to them:
"Love is a stranger in an open car
To tempt you in and drive you far away"
Ok, who can come up with the next two lines (or edit from "To tempt you in and...")

I'd agree with Judy on this one, but with an addendum.
Writing and exchanging ones thoughts can be very intimate in a way meeting someone in real life often isn't. Social situations do tend to have a set of unwritten rules in terms of what we reveal of our inner selves.
But in the discussion that occurs more than occasionally in the forum and certainly via PM and e-mail opens us up in a way that exposes many of our inner workings, attitudes, fantasies, dreams, loves, hates and everything in between.
So I believe both are very different forms of communication that add to the 'grand total' of knowing someone.
So my vote is book AND film.

I've done a number of psychometric tests in the days when the corporations I was a senior manager in decided to check to see if I (we) were suited to management.
This one came up with exaxtly the same results for me as the ones that cost a fortune from very expensive consultants. lol

I can see just what Hayley means here. And I agree with you, although it provides for different needs for different individuals.
I view it as a community of people rather than a website, the site is just how we all communicate.
