I spent an a short while in a trendy cocktail bar near me recently. Very cute girl behind the bar...friend talking waffle (albeit amusing waffle) to somebody else, which I'm listening in to. Girl gets me a drink. Girl mentions that she hasn't seen me there before..I respond that it's my first time...and continue to listen to friends conversation. Girl asks where I usually drink, I say "all over the place, London mainly"...and crane my neck back to friends conversation. Girl mentions that she often does the same and asks where I'm going later. I respond "dunno" and listen again to my friends conversation. Girl wanders off.
On leaving, I mention how cute said girl was. "Then why did you all but ignore her when she tried to hit on you", responds friend. The penny drops and I feel extremely stupid.
So...no, unless smacked upside the head I have no clue most of the time when someones hitting on me...
It is a good idea...and a very quick and easy thing to implement.... approval and encouragement ++
.
Sublime voice, brilliant lyricist and thumping almost post-punk pianist. Three albums thus far (first at just 18), all different, all genius.
....discreetly passing Varca another glass in the interests of conversation....
"Laura" by the Scissor Sisters, as far as I know, is scientifically proven to get everybody (even me) jigging a little biggrin
smile Was worth it for the spanking  ...now really must stop hijacking this thread redface
...resisting the urge to flirt.... *pah*, too young anyway, and gotta respect David's efforts wink
...well bugger me, 200th post surprised
I've never had a good morning PM either....but then I never could get the hang of mornings.
Good afternoon all biggrin xx

know in Aikido we use wooden weapons purely for help with ballence, control, and reactions. We also learn to disarm with them..

...and the forms as created by Mr Uesheba (in particular Shiho Nage) are actually based on sword play (drawing, striking and defence in that case).
Goose, np, bit of an anorak in this area ;) redface
Oooh, almost forgot. If you can afford a couple of days (or even a week) to shoot across to Cambodia and check out Angkor Wat, your trip will have been amazingly worthwhile.
While Shoogle is a great place for advice, more specific advice from people actually there at the moment can be found on , run by Lonely Planet. Seems to be down at the moment though sad
I'll have to check that one out.
Forgotten an obvious entry (forgive the pun) for some on here: .
My top recommendations:
Perfume (Patrick Süskind) - Very, very dark, but exquisitely written and thought provoking.
The Time Travellers Wife (Audrey Niffenegger) - Some may call it soppy, but I thought it was gorgeous frankly. A proper "unputdownable" book.
Imagica (Clive Barker) - A fantastic (and sensual) journey into the surreal, Pratchett fans would probably love it.

... slip of the fingers ;)
Naah, it is (along with Muay Bhorat) an ancestor of Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)..incorporating the grappling (outside clinchwork) and weapons aspects.
I should be back out there in Jan myself (trip delayed, fourth time out there though, lived there for a while).
Pretty much a safe country - smile and be nice and you'll be looked after - accept that locals are going to try and rip you off in a good natured way, and you'll be loved. Far to many foreigners ("farangs") get arsey when Thai's try their traditional fast ones...simply smile and bata - play act a little even, and you'll quickly have friends.
Do not, under any circumstances, be tempted by the girls in the likes of Patpong (nr Bangkok), Pattaya (on the coast) or Patong (Phuket). These three places are essentially where most of the "sleeze" factor of Thailand reside. If you do indulge, if you're lucky you'll end up with a "Catoy" (ladyboy - hey, maybe it's your thing), if you're less lucky you'll end up with a life sentence (a significant percentage of Thai working girls are HIV positive, according to the WHO).
The very south, heading for Malaysia, is a little dodgy at the moment, a little muslim uprising thing going on with fairly frequent bombings. The rest of the country is fairly safe (well, as safe as a country under military coup leadership can be).
Places to visit:
Bangkok - Khaosan Road, travellers mecca, you cannot help but hook up with new friends there. Not "real" thailand, but an excellent place to land and begin finding your bearings.
You must check out a Muay Thai bout while there. Either Ratchdamnoern or Lumpini stadiums (I prefer Lumpini, it is very, er, "gritty"). Thaiboxing to Thais is very much like football to brits...but with less violence (gambling is huge, as is the atmosphere).
There are a glut of temples and parks as well, but you'll be guided by your new friends on the Khao San I'm sure.
Chiang Mai to the north (and surrounding areas) will provide proper jungle experience and relaxation. Again refer to Khaosanners for up to date top tips.
Which pretty much leaves the trip to the south (not too much apart from a national park near Prachuap Kiri Kan that is noteworthy), and the islands, of which, a quick break down....
Phuket: Largely a luxury hotel style tourist resort, unless you know where you're going. If you would like to train Muay Thai, PM me and I can hook you up with training and cheap accomodation.
Phi-Phi: Haven't been since the Tsunami, when it was flattened, but my honest thoughts on it are that's it's a stunning piece of land that has been utterly ruined and overdeveloped....what is there now though remains to be seen.
Krabi: On the same trek as Phi-Phi, very very laid back, room to escape, opportunities for some of the worlds best rock climbing (if that's your thing), a lovely part of the world. If you do go there, make sure you get yourself a trip to "Hong Island"...simply breathtaking.
....and on the other side of the land of smiles....
Koh Samui
Absolutely gorgeous island, hire a motorbike (if you ride, get a car if you don't) and drive around it, explore a little, find waterfalls - it is a jewel. Chaweng on the other hand (the main "town") is like a cross between Benidorm and Patpong, unless that's your thing, I would at least not stay there, if you have to visit at all.
Koh Phangan
Another gorgeous island, used to be a very quiet escape in-between the notorious "full-moon-parties", but sadly now that has been capitalised on and there are often various "half-moon" and "ooh,-isn't-the-moon-pretty-tonight" parties in between.
A word of warning. If you indulge in any illicit substances, DO NOT buy them, or even try them at one of these parties. The Thai police are well known for setting farangs up at these events, and while the most likely outcome would be expulsion and a heavy fine (or heavier baksheesh), a possible outcome is the death penalty.
Koh Tao
The best till last.
My favourite ikkle island in Thailand. If you are a diver, you'll love it. If you're not, I suggest doing your certification here. A pretty small island, not too developed, absolutely stunning. It's possible to escape and not be bothered (try "here and now"), or head along a run of beach for full party atmosphere, but with little or no attitude.
Wherever you go, have a blast.

Knife fighting is not a martial art (or is it someone correct me if it is)

Can do ;)
As well as being a principle close quarter weapon in almost all warfare (making the expert use of it a de facto martial art), knife-fighting is practiced in many "older" martial arts, inluding , Krabi Krabong and even some Ju Jitsu styles.
Sorry Sercher, but yes - you would be wrong. As with any Japenese art form, a lot of the tenets and philosophies surrounding the arts are the same (the "do"), but neither of those are martial (of war).

I do hope they include the warning thats appearing on the covers of some books these days to take care when turning the pages as paper can cut.

lol
I'd say the chances of a: A thug purchasing such a book with the aim of personal improvement and b: Actually understanding the energies and techniques involved without an experienced eye overseeing - are both pretty minimal, I would tend not to worry ;)

I recommend you run 15 miles a day.
I'll see you in a little over 3 months biggrin
H.x

lol
... it would only take me 10 days though....I'd definitely need to borrow your shower at the end of it! wink
Yay, forgot about this (wasn't going to be in the country). Definitely going this year - which day is my favourite bottom going? smile
lol Seen it before, very funny indeed.
The bit about Qantas not having any accidents is a little out of date though.
Spent the last couple of months doing very little training indeed, put on a little weight, and then drunkenly agreed to "Run London" last Monday.
....Managed - for the winning "South" team, but lordy am I paying for it today! Anyone else stoopid enough to put themselves through it yesterday?
Has inspired me to start running properly again though smile
So good pubs for tonight please Shoogle!
Not Gay, but not on the pull either, so sexual preference pretty irrelevent - haven't been a regular there for years, so suggestions most welcome biggrin
Heading to Brighton Thursday for some work on Friday - anyone want to hook up and show a guy around? biggrin
Sigh sad
Actually had some work in Barry a few weeks ago - thought about you guys but it ended up being cancelled mad
...I really must get over that way soon smile kiss
...oh and birthday hangover has finally lifted - I really am going to give my liver a little rest now!
