If you look at the bottom corner next to the clock and you have loads of little icons there then it probably best you find out what they are and remove any you don't use because they all take up CPU/Memory. Also check out how much space you have on your hard disk - in reality you want over 5GBs free with XP because it uses virtual memory along with actually memory for spooling and performance. Also press Ctrl-Alt-Del altogether and that'll tell you want programs are running in the background and if you know what your looking for you can find the programs that are running that aren't needed plus its also worth downloading the beta spyware program from microsoft which is a free trial because that found loads of ad ware and spyware running in the background

I've got Norton, McAfee (with aol, see), AdAware and AVG and I still get feckin Trojans and god knows what else. Aol spyware pops up frequently to do a qucik scan but never finds anything so I can only conclude that it is shite.
Absolutely spot on - I'm an IT manager for a large government organisation and we have been using MS-Beta version because it seems to find more spyware then any other program on the market, makes sense they have more resources and investment so can afford to make a better program plus their firewalls and DSO are cak and let every bit of shite through so they had to do something!

Why not tell us a bit more about yourself and what you are looking for?
As far as seperating out the wheat from the chaf well its experience really - it can be very difficult and disheartening. The only way I can advise is to join in on the forums and maybe the chatroom get to know people that way. Maybe attend a few munches or parties when you are more established - let people see the real you as such.
