A lot of people dont realise they are also being bombared with adverts too. Wanadoo and others i believe do this (sorry if wrong).

there are plenty of little and very reasonable companys (ISP's) that do good service.
Pipex is one - but there are many more.
Pipex gets good reviews - higher than most - but it is a little "user unfriendly"
By which i mean it's email takes a little time to configure.
Well worth it for as low as £16 or £18 a month though!

If i can help RE connection probs I dont mind giving any info I have.
I take it you are using Dial Up 56k modem with NTL.
NTL may suggest you go to their Broadband high-speed service.
It is faster - but there are a few things you shoudl check first.
One is wether your computer is up to it.
If it is an older model - then it may not take the new modem.
Although i have to say in my experience NTL broadband uses one of the best modems in the market, beating Telewest, BT and Pipex, as well as homechoice AOL and others. Best being small in size, easy to configure and using two connections Ethernet Network cable and USB - both supplied.
Two is security. With any Broadband high-speed service you are continually on.
Just like your computer being your home - and the internet being your street and local area, you would need to check you have security that you are happy with. You dont want anyone jumping over your back wall! I always suggest some form of firewall and antivirus to anyone considering high speed. This does not need to cost any money - there are free products that do this.
You can go to any one of hundreds of high speed providers. NTL are pretty cheap (start at £18 a month i think) and pipex (need BT phone line) are a little complicated with their set up but start at £16. Technically these are like two or three times faster as your current - but dont tie up your phone line. You can be on the phone and the internet at the same time. In reality these are closer to 5 times your current speed. But you want an "unlimited" service. It doesnt cost more. It shouldnt. If you want faster than these services you can - you just pay more. But once you start a contract you are tied in for a year. They will let you go faster/pay more but not stop paying.

Lonley planet has a new guide book that i found very useful on Amsterdam.
Check out the 5 flies (D' ijff Vliegen) 530 40 60 - Spuistraat 294-302 if you want a really top notch meal (around 30E each food). This is an evening's entertainment and should not be rushed. Book to get a really nice table if you know you want to go. (pg 135 of LP)
Amsterdam is incredibly central and easy to get around. We walked the majority of the time, but if you take the train into the centre from the airport (very fast and quick) by a tram ticket at the same time. You can buy one 15 punch ticket that two people can share. But most trams are two punches..
: Hotels in the centre have always been a bit hit and miss - and there was the suggestion of the hotel outside amsterdam. If you want to stay in amsterdam - you can be central without paying the central prices - because everything is so close. It is difficult for a London boy to explain that amsterdam is only 1km square - and that if you stay 400m off this - you can be in a much quieter location (except you dont seem to want that...)
Finally - if you want "a night off" then i suggest the venue Boom Chicago. They are an improv comedy club (dont eat there!). Here is a real cou. They do unoffical boat trips by volunteers (suggest 10E + tip) - ask at the bar. On the boat you can then get tickets for perormances cheaper! Yep - i know all the tricks
Well - these type anyway! The boat trip is really worth while - and you can take sandwiches, drinks and smokes with you! These are small boats max 8/10 people. Much more cosy than the big tourist boats!BTW - you just have to go to the main Rembrandt museum. It is being renovated - but you just have to go. Because. The Night Watch is there. Say No More!
