Yes this is an open forum and people are free to express themselves (within the bounds of the AUP) but that means that you may get responses you dont like. Not everyone is eloquent at speaking or they may not have as wide a vocabulary as the next, does that make their opinion any less valuable?? I think not.
I could sit down in a room with probably anyone on this site and talk to them about biology, chemistry and forensic science and loose them withing the first 30 seconds, could blind them with science, use words that they have never hear of. Does that make me any better than any of them? No. Where i may excel in one area another person wil know far more than me on any other area. Blue and her psychology, for instance, would loose me in no time (not meaning to involve you Blue just the first example I could think of smile

All in all, maybe Lou could tone down her language, but then again as I have said before, if your going to bait people don't complain about their reply.... you will bait in your own way and they will reply in theirs!
And on an aside, this is not the first time you have baited someone and then had a go at them for their response, maybe others should take note.
There is a phrase you know that runs something like.
If you cant stand the heat dont go in the kitchen. Id be the first to appologise if i thought someone i was as you call baiting (though in practise todays wasnt strong enough to be classified as that) was not an adult and of sound mind. But if someone comes in here and blasts off about a disadvantaged group, well personaly and based on the suportive pms ive recieved on the subject of this thread they , deserve all they get.
You see thats the difference im used to playing with the grown ups (both politicaly and physically) and we dont need to resort to gutter language!

4 years ago when i was at school we used to have debate classes you know on abortion etc.............. even on racisim and people were 100% honest with the way they felt, but people who could relate to the comment i.e people of different race were not affected buy this once we left the respected everyone else's view and thoughts and we used to debate and argue in this session once it had finish the school NEVER has trouble really with kids as this was the time to express the way you felt without being judged for it.
Its a shame adults carnt put this into action, and comments like along the lines of "i carnt wait to meet this people face to face" is quite childish, infering that something will be do about this thread. Personally i take that comment as a threat but, people are intitled to anything they want to say. Maybe one day mutual respect will actually come into place and then maybe these sort of things wouldnt happen?????

if you ment i was reffering to the big issue sellers, down and outs homeless etc. i wasnt jags. someone very close to me was abused by her parents and was forced to run away before they killed her probably. being as she was stabbed by them on many occasion for silly things like not washing up fast enough. she sat outside chip shops hoping that someone would feed her, she lived in squats and had a pretty horrid time untill the parents of someone she new offered her a place to stay. i was reffering to certain people that im dying to meet on here face to face so we can ,shall we say discuss certain things biggrin

The point was to encourage a certain person to think how it would feel like to "walk in anothers shoes", as one minority grouping to another.
You see main stream society is not very tolerant of many sub groupings, and i thought it would be the easiest way to explain how excluded the homeless can feel. But by the looks of it and if i have read a recent post correctly, this dosnt follow and tollerance it would appear, does not transfer easily
Postie asked in an earlier post why bother with this thread as no one was going to change their mind,, fortunately Happy Cats has disproved that, so its nice to see that there are some people on sh with open minds. Btw Happy Cats, Big Issue sellers are trained in the art of sales and customer relations, before they are allowed on to the streets (as in any job there will be those that fail to follow their guidlines) in my experience they are some of the nicest sales people you can meet, especially when you think what they have to put up with.
Jags your right about all societies having their "fuck ups" (what horrible terminology though) and personaly i think you can judge a society by how it treats its i would suggest that sh dosnt do very well overall on hos w it treats those who are not percieved as "normal" for the site?

I guess with your pastimes you bound to have some problems with society but you dont have the copyright on that. The guy selling the big issue will have far more basic problems and if you dont give a fuck about him, imho, you should, then society might at last become more open and understanding of all. Isnt that what you want?

It wouldn't bother me over much as its all been said before so neither you or anyone else would be the first to say it, don't really see your point here either as I didn't even say it. I would imagine that I have got onto many peoples tits over the years but I wouldn't be the only one. I don't really know why your asking me that question as it wasn't me who said it in the first place. I suppose you just want someone else to take to task now so just go ahead. There are a lot of people and a lot of things get on my tits, metaphorically speaking of course. People who take things out of context are just one of them.
Just like Baiiffs, I don't give a fuck either, and the guy who sells the big issue on Canal Street and insists on following me down the street and saying "Oh go on its just a quid love" and wont take no for an answer does no one any favours and I wont buy anything from him for that reason. I notice he always seems to have enough money to spend a great deal of his spare time in Churchill's Bar buying alcohol which he is entitled to do of course just as the rest of us. However most of us don't pester others by asking them for money and follow them down the Street. He certainly isn't homeless either he lives in a flat over near Oldham Street.
Maybe he spends his money in a bar to get company? Maybe the reason he has a flat is because hes working?
This is just another thread that has got out of hand and you wanted to take Bailiffs to task for voicing their opinion. Now you want to do the same for me responding to someone else and to something that wasn't even your post. Carry on though, rip away.
Baliffs brought the issue of homelessnes not me, it wasnt the subject of the original question which was about sales peopel which is a totaly diffefrent judy i wasnt by any means ripping away. i was responding to the way you had accussed momf of being aggressive about a subject that was clezrly close to his heart and asking you to put yourself in his shoes, always a good exercise dont you think?
Its not about homelessness and the ridicule of those that find themselves in that state at all. The thread was about being pestered by people we don't want to buy things from and from people who stop to ask us questions in Supermarkets. But you have made it an issue about something totally different and want to be argumentative to people. So just get on with it, like I said I don't really give a fuck. If those comments were aimed at me then i would ask you to read back and see that bakllifs first posted by saying she felt that her local big issue seller "got on her tits"
I found that comment excuatingly unkind and directed towards someone who was clearly worknig hard to better himself and had no way of replying to the comment. Homelessness iss a far too common and soul destroying situation to be in and i found the comment very offensive.
Free speech should be open to all but one would hope that nowadys most people would be able to think beyond, my , myslef and I, Unfortunately that is often not the case

As foir scrounging, i think if you had ever read the issue you would know that is not so but maybe it gooes over your head??
For me , one of the most moving posts that i have ever read on here is from Riff Raff and was posted just before Christmas last year on a thread i started on the Big Issue. i have copied and pasted it below because it is such a wonderful post and i doubt anyone with a heart can read it and the say they selling the Big Issue is scrounging.

I detest the lazy stereotyping of homeless people.
I equally abhor simplistic analysis and proposed solutions.
Try getting a job when you have no fixed abode.
Try holding on to documents that might help you get a job when you have nowhere safe to keep them.
Try keeping your body clean or your clothes laundered when you are living in a doorway.
Try to exude confidence and self-esteem in a job application or at an interview when you know you've just come from an abandoned, filthy, rat-infested building.
Before people propose their facile remedies they might like to find out what it really is like to live in grinding poverty without a roof over thier head. And I don't mean these publicity stunts that are favoured by MPs where they spend a week in a hostel. They still have well-shod feet and fine threads on their backs. They don't carry out their little social experiments long enough for holes to appear in their shoes. And they have the knowledge that their adventure will only last for seven days. I doubt if they'd be so bouyant if they had to endure those conditions day after day, month after month with no end in sight. That is spirit-crushing. Try "a few common sense rules...washing " when you are subsisting at that that level of despair, Mr I-had-to-work-bluddy-hard-to-get-where-I am-today.
There is no doubt that many BI sellers have substance misuse problems.
Just as many do not. So what. There are many actors and musicians who openly flaunt their drug-using. Am I to boycott their films and records ? But for the libel laws I would name several major retail brands that are headed by people with cocaine problems. Am I to eschew these products also?
I did not get out of my longterm homelessness predicament because I "took reponsibility for myself" or "obeyed a few commonsense rules."
I was fortunate enough to get help at a time and in circumstances where I was able to accept it. The context was important. Without going into detail, there were many times when I would not have been able to accept help even it was there. Alas, for many people the help is never available.
I am most grateful for the help I got.
It was a modest start and the timing was crucial.
I was offered a place at a half-way house from the street to what would eventually become a bedsit tenancy. Neither the half-way nor the bedsit could be described as palaces. From this base I got a place in college. And I decided to give back to society by being of use to those who were still living in circumstances like those I had recently left. That was seventeen years ago. I customised my degree to equip myself for working with the homeless and the addicted. And I'm bloody good at my job. Not so much because of my academic qualifications (though they are excellent too) but because of my experience.
Another way that i try to serve people who find themselves in situations similar to thos e that I came from is by challenging the ignorance and prejudice that many people show when discussing this issue. That's why I've taken more time in my contribution to this thread than I possibly have done for any other SH topic to date.
There is not a day goes by that I do not recall exactly where I came from.
And feel grateful for what I've got today. I am not a rich man in material trerms. I've got a modest little home now, a few possessions, nice wheels, etc. And that's about it materially. No big deal. What matters far more is the dignity that I've now got that was a million miles away and seemingly unattainable while I was homeless. That is priceless.
And I fight hard to maintain that self-respect. It's a precious and fragile commodidity for someone with my experience. There were plenty of people who tried to erode it a score or more years ago with their judgemental attitudes.
I have no more time for these people now than I had then.
I would rather spend time chatting with a BI vendor than hobnobbing with the "get a job and and get your together" crew.
And I do.
Don't be so hasty to judge people until you have walked at least a mile in their shoes.
