Adding my ha'pennyworth
<rant>
Most (large) charities sub-contract the signing-up new donaters now - and up to the first 2 years (YES TWO YEARS worth) of contributions go to these agencies.
Most large charities are now run as profitable businesses with a full complement of staff - in some cases a hefty chunk of your donation goes in, ahem, admin charges. And don't forget that just because they say it's run as a not for profit organisation - an awful lot of your cash can, and does, end up in salary costs ("Well sir, we have to pay the CEO £250Kpa, it's the going rate!").
I have in the past signed up to a couple of the £2 per month schemes as I considered that the cost of a pint per month to help was OK....BUT every single one waited a couple of months then asked to increase the donation. Needless to say I now only give to small charities when I know it's all going to the intended recipient.

PS: Just thinking about how sad it is that we no longer trust even charities to be fair
Not got an Ipod but...
I have a Creative Zen Touch with a small radio transmitter attached. That way I can move my Zen from house to car without faffing about with wires etc. I just preset the frequency on my radio(s) and tune in. A way to have your entire music collection with you in the car and at home.
I have to say it is great and the transmitter only cost about £8 inc shipping from HK.
Dave
PS: A good side-effect of the Ipod/MP3 player phenomenon is hitting the random button - it's like re-discovering your music all over again.
Mine:
Big green bin for non-recyclables
smaller brown bin for garden waste (no vegetable matter)
green container for waste paper (has to be good mind, non of that rubbishy paper like directories...or wrapping paper....or envelopes with windows etc etc)
grey container for cardboard (no corrugated stuff) and glass (washed and labels removed)
pink bin-bag for plastic and tins (washed and labels removed)
recyclable/non-recyclables are collected every other week in turn
I'm a big fan of recycling but even I'm getting a bit fed-up of the amount ofspace this all takes up. Not to mention the sheer number of containers I have to put out on a recycle day!

Hey Wirral,
After calming down I can see everyones point. Its wierd that Yorkshire folk should be supicous of each other. Oh wait, we are Yoskhire folk, now I see the problem.
I think I could have made a more successful appearence on the forum by waving Captain Todger about. I need to get to know so many people ! So little time ! Eeeeeek!
Hmmn, worth a try.....or maybe not! Methinks sticking to asking dodgy questions might be better
Oh and Riding Mountains has a lovely neck, but what I really like is the pout ! Grrr!*

*What he said. Esp the pout
Hi Tis
I was just reading through this and was going to say pretty much this:
Quote by dambuster
I've only got 4000 ish posts, so I'm a good way behind freckledbird, but can be paranoid occasionally....
But . . . . . .
Here's an idea.
Let's start again.
Welcome to the asylum TiS.
Are you here for the social aspect of the site as well as the physical ?
If so . . . . . . . . .
Mine's a pint of Smith's, and she'll probably have some of that cider guff
Will you hear two pieces of advice?
1. Don't sit down with an egg in your pocket.
2. Posting content of PMs in the open forum - bad idea.
Do with that, what you will.
db

Anyway all - I can see Tis' point and, to a certain extent, Freckledbirds but I think if we read this whole thread it might just have got slightly out of hand.
Freckledbird - Thanks for keeping an eye on 'infiltrators'. It's nice to know that there is someone out there keeping a lookout for us so we dont end up in the NOTW AGAIN!!!
Tis - Firstly, hello and :welcome: to SH. Secondly, I'm glad you have spent the time to quell any fears that any of us might have had as to your true credentials - I, for one, am convinced. Thirdly (!?!), Feel free to ask lots of questions but, just maybe, settle in and get known before bombarding the forums - it makes some people jittery wink
Right, can we now just fly the  and call a truce
Freckledbird meet Tis, Tis meet Freckledbird. You live in the same county, get together at the next munch, buy each other a drink, check any credentials you need to and then have a laugh together!
Dave
PS: Can't help it HLB: "Bear in mind that there will always be a few unsavoury characters on sites like this - not just journalists, but men pretending to be women etc" And your point is???!!?!?!??! rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
Thick skin checker: : Anybody from Yorkshire who's paid the full dues must be genuine - they wouldn't shell out otherwise biggrin
If you just laughed FB and Tis then I think we may be OK, if not I'm bolt
In a blatant attempt to pull this thread back into it's original meaning (although interesting to hear the {various} history of those ankles! lol );
I love bare shoulders. Women in ballgowns just make me go weak at the knees if they have nice shoulders.
I've never known why - perhaps I was rugby tackled in my younger days or summat
Well I think it's your duty to introduce an Aussie version of this site over there - surely it would go down a storm with them. You'll be rich....rich, I tell ya!
Get St3v3 to mention it to the big guys (and can I have a commission for the idea please biggrin )

It's nice to be nice biggrin

I'm guessing but have you been to The Gambia by any chance?
That is a standard phrase used by almost everyone out there - a sign of their general laid-back attitude and friendliness.
Dave
Not sure how to do it myself but a mate of mine emails them from his phone to a mail account and then downloads them from there. I can ask if you want further details.
Another thought, if it's a newer phone, does it have an SD/MMC memory card? If so, plug in USB adaptors are readily available for a couple of quid that will do the job as well.

Dave
Thanks St3v3
That makes life a lot easier (was having to login with IE to send a mail with pics redface )
Dave
Hi all
Another query from me
When I am using Firefox I can't ad photos to mails. I get the dropdown box and the image shows up when chosen but I can't then click on it to add to a mail. Is there anything that I can do to make it work or will I have to use IE when sending mails?
Again, thanks in advance for any help.
Dave
Thanks Surreynewbie and Steph - it's only to get a rough idea of where an advertiser is so both links work fine.
I've just tried the postcode lookup link in the advice thread and it told me I'm not allowed to access that page.
Is there something wrong with it or has it been discontinued? If it's OK, has anybody else had the same problem?
Dave
This reminded me of what happened to a mate and his son a few months ago (Nov I think)
His son's motorbike/scooter was stolen one night, he was only 3rd party so they had resigned themselves to their loss and, too nicely in my opinion, bought him another one for his birthday.
About 2 weeks later my mate was driving past the garage at the bottom (yes we are talking 50yards away) of his road and what does he see - the scooter being ridden by a local lad into the garage to fill up!!!!! Now my mate is a diesel fitter and not the smallest guy around so he called the cops on his mobile whilst turning round and making his way back to, successfully, block them until plod arrived.
Now that should have been the end of the story but, NO, not in our caring sharing society. The Police, in their wisdom, decided that there was, ahem, insufficient evidence to prove that they stole the scooter in the 1st place!?!????!?!?!?! Oh yeah, and they didnt even press the motoring offence charges (no insurance, no license etc.) as it was too much paperwork but did manage to find the time to enquire as to whether he had called them on his mobile whilst driving.
And we wonder why this country's full of lazy, lawless gobsh*tes.
Now all together with me, count to 10 and relax banghead :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Hi all
I've done a search and can't find this posted before so apologies if it has already been covered. I don't like to complain (much :-)) on here about the ads but the problem has got a lot worse over the past few months
Could the fact that a user is fully-paid up or not be included on the profile/ad? As a single bloke I am used to getting no replies to my ad responses (is as annoying to me as getting 'cut and paste' responses is to others, especially when you've spent time crafting a personal response!) but knowing whether they can read/reply in the first place would help!
Dave
runs away before freckled bird flames me for mentioning ads on here bolt
If you're inviting single guys - count me in too! Wouldn't mind assisting you getting it up and running either if you needed any help. I can't claim to have any experience but another pair of hands, especially on the night might be useful and I'm not too far away

It sounds a good idea to us - even though weve been on this site since march, we still havent been to any munches or socials... (we admit, were a bit scared!) Would give us a really good opportunity to meet people.

What they said! I've been around for ages but I'm a little bit nervous about going to one and also the NW munches seem to be booked months and months in advance.
So count me in for a NW one.

Steph  lol
Only kidding that would be an awful way to do it

Steph
That's appalling......but soooo very funny :laughabove: :laughabove: :laughabove: :laughabove:
Ahh
This is what I like best about this site - lots of genuine, caring advice lol
What else can I add - nothing really except I think lots of us have been there and it does sometimes take time to sink in before you realise you are being taken for a mug.
Move on and find someone who wants/likes you for you!
Good luck
Dave
PS: If you want to tape the break-up conversation I'm sure there are plenty on here that would love to hear it :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:
Thanks Mr D
but...........I see you still have an animated avatar: how can you do that with a jpg? Or am I missing some point?
Hi all
Haven't been around for a bit (they made me work for a change!!) and have just come back to this new all-changed site. I've read through a lot of the "it's changed" threads to see what is and isn't working and I can say some things are good and some not so good but I have a question that I haven't been able to find: where's my avatar gone in my profile?
I am hopefully going to see it appear on the left when this gets posted but in the space for my avatar pic in my account there is only a blank space and no option to upload a pic. Have I missed something?
Ta in advance
Dave
Without a doubt AVG - the best free anti-virus around.
Hang on I'll just check the site address.............

To the left is a products link, click on that and then the AVG free edition. Follow the instructions and you're done.
Has always worked great for me and updates automatically every time I switch on in the morning (broadband) so no worries about being up-to-date.

Dave
Definitely CD-WOW - I've been buying from here for years and they are doing top 75 for at the mo with a 50p voucher sent with each one.
Have tried most of the others but CD-WOW is the most consistent, cheapest and quickest that I know of.
Hi
Is anybody else experiencing this? For the last week or so, access to my mail has been very slow to the point of excruciating. Is anybody else experiencing this? Most other sites appear OK.
Dave
It's possibly your cookies that are corrupted (NO, not the same as the disintegrating dunked digestive that's just dropped into your tea!).
Try (assuming Internet Explorer) Tools, Internet options, Delete cookies (half way down the page). This should get rid of any cookies that assume you are already logged in etc. Then try again.
If not dunno :dunno:
Dave
Initially -
SHOCK
HORROR
How Can They??

After reading throught the thread:
So far,
Elliot appears to be giving out as much info as he can
What he has said so far seems reasonable
He has a sense of humour (essential in here so he should fit right in)
I belong to a couple of commercial, yet free, sites that are OK, no heavy ads, spam etc that work very well (in fact I have often wondered where they make a profit but they obviously do!!), so I am not too bothered about that YET!
I'm actually away for the weekend so there is plenty of time for things to calm down and settle. I, for one, am prepared to see what happens. Surely a commercial concern will not want to break what is obviously a VERY successful formula - it wouldn't make sense.
So, a Great Big Thanks to Mark - you made, and maintained, a brilliant site. I hope you made a respectable profit and you can concentrate more on your private life/family.
To all the ops and moderators: please bear with them and see what happens - you are the structure of this site and are what makes it tick over so well. biggrin :D :D
To the new owners - Hi, :welcome: , pull up a chair and have a chat. You've just got yourselves a big, friendly, piss-taking, loving, open-minded site with an amazingly loyal membership - try not to break it! Finally - IF you can make a profit out of me without unduly inconveniencing me then go right ahead!! If it keeps this part of SH going as it is I'm happy, just don't assume that your changes are what WE want - ASK!!!!!
Dave
Sitting on the fence waiting
Huff!!!!! puff!!!!!!
Am I too late to throw my pennyworth in??? Am I??? FFS - I've just run all the way from the cafe, hope you're still listening biggrin
I've just got a DVD recorder (DVD+R and +RW for recording) for the princely sum of £68 from ASDA. It's a present for someone but I had to check it works didn't I. redface
For that kind of money it's hard to go wrong - dv and svideo in for camcorder recording (front inputs too!), plays just about anything, 5 levels of quality. Works like a dream.
Hard to believe that you can get this kind of kit for less than £70. Mr Sony must cry into his pillow every night.

Dave
Well I for one approve. very nice pic.
Is it a good likeness as mine makes me look a bit thin, I think!!! biggrin :D
