Unlike we in the West who have access to 24 hour media and a world of opinion on the world wide web the insurgents in Afghanistan get the vast majority (if not all) of their information from their so called religious leaders.

I see the question and the response that keeps coming to mind is: Do they have satellite TV?
Sometimes I think American media has gotten so stupid because they know the bad guys are watching. Then I am forced to admit this is probably just wishful thinking.

Every village will have a TV & Dish to provide some world news. Now even if it is only one TV or radio, you have to see it in the flesh to understand just how much UK News is owned by R Murdoch.
Do you need to read or write to listen to TV or radio broadcast from surrounding countries and the Afghan Studios that are funded to enlighten the country.

It has got very little to do with anything regarding their knowledge.
Have you heard of the $10 Taliban.
Put it this way... if you had nothing... I mean absolutely nothing... nothing at all... and the local "Iman" or "village Elder" said to you - go and shoot/bomb/kill these people (and these people meant absolutely nothing to you) - would you do it.
Now... you may say (in fact you probably would say) "Absolutely not - murder is wrong, taking another life without legitimate justification is morally reprehensible and socially bankrupt of common decency".
You would be right... it is.
But put yourself in the position of a local Afghan - he has seen the Russians come and go, the Americans bomb his homeland, and the NATO Forces invade him and place their standards upon him and force him to comply.
.... all this - and he is still skint.
The local Taliban leader says "go and blow up those Brits and we will give you the equivalent of 1 years pay".
People who mean nothing to you and represent all that you hate.
