since the changes?
Just idle curiosity based on a few comments in other threads.
Don't like the changes...what-so-ever...the forums seem so fragmented!...i only logged on just to answer this...most of the time i don't...just pop in, have a quick look and go...there is just too many forums!
Mmmmm? I have to say the forum seems a lot quieter since the changes and consequently I've been coming in lees than before, and tending not to read as many threads.
sad
Well, I kind of think that if you post in one of the newer forums, your posts tend not to get read.
They are the SH outposts. Where only the foolhardy tread and outlaws roam the streets. I think people feel much safer in the cossetted environs of the Cafe.
It does dishearten somewhat to make a post and get 2 responses in a week, when in the cafe it would roll and get ten times as many.
So I guess I am posting less. I am certainly posting less 'interesting' stuff (depending on your point of view, you may think what I put is utter bilge) more just responses to other threads.

With you on this , just too many forums now , dont log in as much you lose threads too easily and cant be botherd to search ?
I have been posting less as there does not seem that much to reply to if honest.
The forums have been quite for a while now, with a few silly threads thrown in to keep things moving.
People may not like my posting style or what I write about but....it generates comments be it negative or positive.
Some of my postings have gone on for pages and a lot of those people who have taken part I have not seen since my "holiday".
I like the new forums as people who have moaned in the past about the political or current issues ones being in the cafe, have now no need to enter them.
SH have given the members what they wanted with the forums put into different sections. All I would say is that the ones who think the forums have been so much better of late, I am finding it hard to find the evidence of that.
But overall I think the new revamped SH is better, both in the way the forums are now laid out, and certainly the new chatroom design.

i think my over all probably works out about the same at the momemt. however, i still don't like the lay out. i used to spend 99% of my time in the cafe whereas now to check up on things you have to keep swapping and changing. the majority of the threads being put up arn't getting the responce that they probably would have done had they been in the cafe because people can't be bothered to trawl.
whips

Yep, I'd agree with all this.

Yes I agree wioth all of the above.
...and cherry, you do wonders for St. George :smitten:
Too many forums!!!
nuff said.............
I've yet to see anyone who's happy with the new layout. If memory serves, when there are changes usually, the furore about them generally dies down within a week. It's not become any more popular though as far as I can tell, and it seems that without exception, people are still unhappy with what's happened to the forums.
I know Admin generally poo poo our opinions as we're "such a tiny minority" of the site, but these are changes that only really affect us. Is it time for them to listen and take the appropriate action now? dunno
This suggestion seems to make the most sense so far...

Soapbox...for political or non swinging controversial topics

Munch and social....for offical munches and socials being arranged

My view is that the forum needed tweaking, but not something quite as radical as we have had.
I like the fact that we have a current affairs thread so the ones who want to argue the toss over issues of the day can do so. I think that is a wise addition. I don't understand the soapbox as well if I am honest, there is so much overlap between those two subjects that it makes one or the other redundant. I know many other people have already made this point already and I fully support it.
In marked contrast to other comments, I thought over the past few weeks the Forum has been rather good actually, regardless of how it has been organised. A vast improvement over past times. I've enjoyed the fact we have not had political posturing leading onto personal point scoring as the cosmic background to what happens on here. To be honest, I can do without that entirely. However I am aware that many people may have a different view than me and I fully understand and accept that, which is why I like the fact there is now a room dedicated to it. So I, and others can ignore it if we choose to do so, while those who do enjoy it can do it in the privacy of their own room and not offend anyone else. A positive solution indeed.
The thing is, I believe anyone can post a thread to garner a response, inflame and annoy people. Many of these threads end in slanging matches and petty point scoring which then lingers on through the rest of the forum in other posts. I've missed that about as much as I have missed having my scrotum ironed. I think that it's much more difficult to provide insight, information or entertain. Doubly more so now that the forum is fragmented far more and it is not really awfully clear which posts should go where.
I'd rather read a forum with one good post, than ten crap ones. It is the quality of the discourse within, rather than the measurable hostility a post causes, that provides the quality people want. It's daft that people can make posts that are intended solely to inflame users, and then hide meekly behind the AUP and their "rights to post". There are no laws preventing people being bigots, idiots or tossers either, but that doesn't mean they make a valuable or worthwhile contribution to society. In many cases, they cause the exact opposite. I think that this can be argued to be the case for some threads on here in the past.
I already think DeanCannock has outlined a fine suggestion for how the forum could be organised into six broad criteria. I do hope Admin listen as I think that is an excellent suggestion and solves almost all the issues that have been raised by forumites thus far.

i'm with angel on this deans suggestion is a good un i think having soapbox seperate is a good idea but other than that would love to see the cafe get back to the way it was
i am hardly posting at all now compared to before i just can't be arsed to keep switching about through all the new forums
My thinking is the people behind this site would do more to make the forums a success, because if someone is to pay their membership fee, and be mainly active in the forums, then it would use less bandwidth than the chatrooms, or video galleries, and would therefore mean the profit margin would increase.
Or am I wide of the mark?
If you go to the Forum index(ie the front page listing all the sections of the forum)
Then click on Recent Post(towards the RHS)
Then click on View Postsince last visit.
This will /should bring up all the threads that have new posts in them since you last logged on.
This might help you locate any thing you want to read quicker.
I'm posting less... or at least: it feels as if I am posting less. And has become more of a 'chore' to do so.
there may have been times when I was disatisfied with the general content of the Cafe, but that would always change anyway...
now, having to be more specific in my 'searching' for something to join in with... I feel my choices have actually been restricted, rather than expanded.
In a geberal forum (as we had with the previous Cafe) there may have been individual threads which didnt appeal, but all the same, I could casually 'dip in' and see what was going on, and decide to contribute or not.
Now that 'ghettos' have been formed and thread-themes 'corraled', entire sections of the Fora have become unappealing.
Spontaneous and dare I say random posting across a wide veriety of topics has been removed from this particular forumite.
(however, you may all be feeling the benefits of my abscence)
it has become a drag, less fun, and devisive.
lp
And someone has listened.....
Well admin have obviously listened and now removed the " soapbox " thingy. So I think they will now all fall under the other heading.
Could not understand why there was two, as one would have sufficed.
There just does not seem to be much to " get your teeth into " of late. Not just on the strong topics, but in the forums as a whole.
Just as the site needs " new blood " so does the forum, otherwise it just tends to get a bit stale sometimes. Maybe that is the cause?
Think it is a tad better now the soapbox has been removed.

there is still the current affairs thread so i guess soapbox comes under that heading i don't mind that though i can pop in there when i'm in a bebating mood
glad to see things more like normal again
redface Can I change my vote to 'posting more'. I've just had verbal diarrhoea in the Café.
Originally, I would've voted 'posting less but for other reasons than the changes' if I'd had an opportunity.
.
i think i post about the same, my diminishing interest has nothing to do with the changes to the forums etc, i do still tend to use the same ones and not go into the others i must say, my lack of posting is more due to the amount of stuff going on in my life at the moment, exams, looming 40th birthday etc, and nothing of interest to contribute tbh.

 Same here
Less although that probably has more to do with my attention span.
Im glad its been simplified and Im chuffed we have a few more mods about the place.
I think I am posting just as much as I have always been. I have mostly been a reader of others posts.
When I first saw the new changes I did not like them at all. Since the reduction I am now starting to like it. I do like the current affairs section being out of the Cafe. By separating them I now have somewhere to go for serious thinking and another for my inane drivel. The fun section is good in that I can always find the SH quiz.

I have to say I reckon the Introduce Yourself thread has definitely encouraged a few more new posters into there.
The only shame is that more people aren't replying to their threads - I know it is a bit of a faff opening another forum up, but it might encourage the new people to them come into the other sections if they got more of a response? dunno
