I reckon anal must be more personal on the whole (no pun intended) than oral. I have never been sexual with a woman that has not involved oral though some have not done anal. In saying that I think that oral comes naturally through foreplay, in most cases, whereas anal has to be asked for

This is a good point. Surely it's a question of personal preference, and whether one is receiving or giving, but there is also the aspect of sensation and which one is the greater.
The other issues of intimacy and eye contact while all true are only one side of the equation. Is it also possible that particular situations/locations can affect the preference? Or even whether role play or other scenarios are involved?
I personally think the lips are a very sensitive part of the body, both kissing and giving oral are very sensual acts that without which the act of sex would feel a little cold.
