lol lol
on the offchance, if anyone is a plumber, can you please pm me cos i've got bust pipes and am gushing everywhere
no, serious now, rolleyes , just when ya think things cant get any worse, frozen old lead pipe to outside toilet has burst and its pissing water out in my sheds - does anyone know what i can seal it with?
repair bloke & water board not coming til morning, by which time my bloody kitchen will be flooded and the stopcock thingy is under the pavement!! looks like its burst underground, so, i can safely kiss goodbye to outbuildings when they come tomorrow to dig it up
it never rains but it pours - or in my case, it doesnt just leak, it floods.
Errr is the water pissing down or coming up through the ground
from the ground! but i reckon the pipe has burst/split at the point where it enters the ground
If you can get to the pipe you can fold the end over and hammer it flat. That should do it temporarily.
Lead's soft hunni so if you flatten the pipe by gentle tapping it'll reduce it to a trickle. Then stuff some chewing gum in the bit's where it's leaking.
Alternatively stuff a wooden bung (bit of broom handle or something of the right diameter) up the pipe.
Problem solved!
Good luck! kiss
PS Bring your house to Sussex and I'll fix it for you now
At the front end of your garden is there a little square cover? you can turn the water off there.
C x
is that dooable with lead piping?
>>> does not do DIY! - i'll probably smack it with hammer and make it 100 times worse!
Well you'll need to turn the water off before you could even see if the pipes burst above the ground. Sure you haven't got a stop cock in the house somewhere......... most houses do. If you can find it turn it off and see if the pipes split.
Must admit sounds like there ain't much you can do tonite though except what ES has suggested........ the pipes shagged anyways so just knock seven bells out of it to try and stop the flow

Nope - water board man asked me that, been out there looking for 20 minutes- someone's tarmac'd over the top , apparently!!
oh god

no hun, stopcock indoors doesnt turn water off outside, its a seperate one apparently!
oooo, i have a plumber on the phone biggrin :D
That case if you can't find the little square cover that Calista mentioned on your property, try looking on the pavement, there will be one there somewhere.
Don't panic!!
Dig around the pipe to expose it. Then flatten the bugger with a hammer GENTLY. Support it with a piece of wood under it where you flatten it though. Oh and hold a piece of wood against it and hit the wood with the hammer.
No time for colour and font sizes. Darkfire's panicking!

Do you have a metal detector?
Or more realistically, can you take a look at your neighbour's gardens and work out where it should be?
I don't have any suggestions for fixing it if you do find the stopcock (I do a fair bit of DIY, but steer clear of plumbing if at all possible), though it's always worth trying gaffer tape dunno
Good luck

Usually under the sink. There must be at least one stop cock between you and the mains.
If the broken pipe is the main feed to the house, which it should not be, being lead, these should have been replaced years ago, then you must turn it off at teh main stop valve in the street.
If you do sustain damage, and it's the council/contractors have tarmac'd over the shutoff tap, you could try claiming for damage off them as they have effectively stopped you limiting the damage by not allowing you access to the stop cock.
I have no helpful suggestions at all, but here's a great big HUG and hope it all gets sorted out without causing too much coldness and wetness!

its definately been tarmac'd over, absolutely nothing in garden/ drive. Pavement outside has recently been re surfaced, i reckon it's under there !!

In that case if you think you know what pipe is causing the problem, and you can see it........ just hit it like ES said, that should at least reduce the flow.
Thanks for your suggestions folks - I love you people I really do!
Definately cant turn the water off as i cant access the stopcock in street, darent smack it too hard as it's a rented property and if I cause further damage I'll be held responsible....
so, it's being gaffer taped and god knows what else, a friend is on her way with kids play sand ( sandbags at this time of night, i ask you! rolleyes ) , and I have been reassured that IF it does flood the kitchen, the council will be liable for the repair bill cos I reported it in plenty of time..... so, there's not much else i can do now.
Thanks to all for your help passionkiss
update:
Plumber is here along with several workmen complete with mini jcb
That stopcock thing I said was buried under tarmac - well, it isnt, but it is located in the next street hence why no one could find it....... and the whole street is being cut off shortly so that the workmen can make a start  Thanks again for the help offered last night! passionkiss
As a little extra, I have now blown up my carpet shampoo machine. It did go pop.

Hey dark hun,
Did you get your hole pluged or did they first dig around looking for that elusive spot and then fill it?
I think we should be told, and were they very hunky and if so do you have any numbers you can pass my way ;-)
