Just heard on the radio that a doctor is suggesting to the medical council that the government should put a tax on chocolate in order to cut obesity.
I eat large quantities, I think as a result of giving up smoking 7 years ago, so it would probably have a huge effect on my pocket.
What do you think of this idea?
The Expat population is going to grow in Belgium.
...and this is going to impact on my pocked.
does it include chocolate source?
There's already a tax on chocolate - VAT rolleyes

Fluffy , you beat me to it!!
I was going to type that.(Nice avatar by the way)
This has been put in the medias attention today, as a way of controlling childhood obiesity, and potential diabetes. A Doctor is going to give a talk on it next week to other Doctors, in Scotland.
I agree something needs addressing, but not by more taxation of chocolate bars.
What a load of rubbish!
Put tax on Kentucky Fried Chicken, Crisps, Hagen Daz, the list could go on and on.
The only way to stop kids from putting the weight on is not to buy so much chocs and stuff for them.
Kids are fed by parents, we are in control of what goes in their mouths, dont buy it and they cant eat it!
A LITTLE of what you fancy does you good, not a lot!
as one who likes chocolate im not best pleased at the thought of paying tax on my chocolate.i dont smoke or drink and this is my only vice.i am not fat and am reasonably fit and healthy for my age .
as lucyand mike7 said a little of what you fancy does you good ,and the parents of obese kids should take more responsibility for their kids health.
mad :x :x :x :x :x

I agree with the tax on KFC idea. The biggest problem with very obese children is, imho, fast food, as well as convenience food packed with fat sugar and salt. Invent a tax that promotes healthy eating across the board. Although if you only eat a little of what you fancy, a bit more tax on chocolate won't make that much difference.

I agree with the tax on KFC idea.

There is a tax on KFC if you eat it in the establishment.

But not if you take it away and not on convenience food.
It's not just chocolate that makes us fat, it's the amount we eat, and not only choc but what about the cakes, pastries, biscuits, alchohol etc. Also lack of exercise a major factor. As a country we get tax'd i don't get is the low fat alternatives are always more expensive, an example i buy low fat greek natural yoghurt, the full fat is more expensive and mascapone cheese the light version is more expensive than the full fat , maybe the goverment should step in and say look we have choices but don't expoilt the healthier versions xx
gawd....don't it make you laugh....one Doctor in some far flung region looking for attention, makes a throw away remark..like maybe we should tax chocolate. All of a sudden its front page news and on radio oand even on swinging forum sites..lol
Its never going to happen...its just a stupid remark by a Bored Doctor after a bit of attention.
All chocolate addicts should be horse whipped naked in the rain every time they fancy a bite. Fancy making us see their creamy deliscious brightly wrapped goodies everywhere we go during our day. Sinfull i say

Totally agree, but something to type about...... wink
REAL chocolate, like you get in Belgium with high cocoa solids (70% plus), is nothing like as fattening and is thought to be more beneficial than the sugary, sweet sickly stuff called chocolate obtainable only in the UK.
I recall that there was a challenge in the EU some time ago about the UK calling its product "chocolate" but I'm not sure where it went from there.
I'd agree with others though; raise the tax on KFC and F&C establishments offering battered Mars Bars but as deancannock says, it's probably some bored research fellow somewhere looking for a substantial grant.
oooooohh shad is that an offer ? :bounce:

i think that chocolate should be witheld from all pmt aflicted women for 2 days. these women should then be sent to this doctor to show him the error of his ways. he will then be talking about why chocolate should actually be free for women on the nhs!

Would everyone please stop talking about taxing KFC.....its sending me into a nervous panic
Chocoholics will have to stand outside and eat alongside the smokers so the rest of don't have to suffer from secondary eating in a fat inducing atmosphere.

I knew it wasn't my fault I'm ummm a little broader in the narrows than is acceptable. :giggle:
The trouble is, people will still buy chocolate, but they will get the cheap rubbish instead of the better quality types. Fair Trade will cease to be bought and kids will be brought up believing that cooking chocolate or worse - Dairy Milk - is an acceptable alternative to Green and Black's and such like.
It won't affect people who are 'addicted' to it any more than putting the price of cigs up makes people stop smoking.

It'll work. By the time this government is done taxing everything pleasureable in life (cue sextax), no-one will be able to afford to eat so obesity will be cured. Everyone will be dead but there will definitely be no fat people!
Ooh hang on, cannibalism might be tax free - there could be some verrrrrrrrry fat people left!
You won't live any longer, it'll just seem like it
I like to throw a spanner in the works occasionally, all those blaming fat for the rise in obesity is barking up the wrong tree. It is actually biologically impossible for the human body to turn animal fats you eat into excess body fat, the only things that cause humans to put on weight is Plant food such as cereals and fruit.
biggrin
flower biggrin
well humans spent 200 0dd thousand years as carnivores, what makes anybody think fruit is good for ya lol
choice between tax on choccie n sex...tax sex......i can manage with choccie and my toys 99% of the time lol.....a woman cant live without chocolate and that would be against her human rights to do that lol
