Some of you will have noticed that Tune Essence is absent without leave. The problem is, he hasn't gone AWOL...
Mark, I and others have been trying to get him back on the site for quite sometime now but to no avail. This is where it gets technical:
He is able to access the web and to access the SH photo gallery/Ads but he is receiving a 404 error when trying to access the forum (which is on a different server). We have checked his routing tables, firewalls, HOSTS files etc. We have even tried using just the IPs for the site (supplied by Mark). We have run virtually every spy ware program known to man. The only thing I can think of is he has been blocked at his local exchange as other with the same ISP, in different areas, can access the site.
So my plea is: is there anyone on the site who is fully conversant with Routing tables and DNS who can shed some light on this?
PM me and I will furnish much, much more detail.
out of interest, can you ping it?

And if that works... a TRACERT might not go amiss.
Problem could be with your ISP routing and nothing to do with the PC setup. If both URL and IP address fail, this is more than likely.
Is the connection equipment a modem router ?? If so, turn it off for 15 minutes or more, to reset the VP (virtual path through your ISP) and try again.
Can you ping the IP address (either basic or using the freeware programme Pingplotter
Pingplotter will tell you where the route is falling down.
Edit : took me so long to write, two had replied in the meantime - still try pingplotter, similar to a trace)
Thanks for getting back.
Mark tried that with him, not 100% sure of the outcome. Will look back at the PMs and see what transpired.
another obvious question, are you using a private IP range on the computer? I've seen some confused souls using public ones which conflict with the one they are trying to reach.

Thanks for that. TE may phone this evening, if he does I'll pass the Pingplotter URL on to him.

Thanks for getting back. The problem is only with the SH Forum. All the other URLS work as advertised.
TE is using NAT but in the range - the Router (a Linksys) defaults.
have you tried a different computer, to rule out the PC?
have you tried removing the router from the equation (turn on the firewall of the PC naturally!)?
once those two steps are taken, then it's probably the ISP. you could also (SHOCK HORROR) try a dial up from the PC to see if that works if you don't have a spare PC I'd recommend btclick as it doesn't require signup biggrin
Yep, he's tried to access SH Forum from his wife's but, again, no joy.
I've Checked the security settings, firewall settings etc. in the Router and his computers and nowhere is any IP or URL specifically blocked.
This might be silly and of no use at all but as we are all throwing ideas in, here goes. Have you checked his privacy settings, if hes had a funny bug get in and change any internet settings then maybe its changed his privacy and wont let him sign on because of the adult content.
Hope thats of a little use

in that case take out the router, and try a different adsl modem (I'm assuming there's someone you can borrow one from if you didn't get one free when you signed up.)
if that doesn't work it's your ISP, if it does then reset the router and hopefully all will be well.
don't bother looking at routing tables etc. as it'll only cause headaches (TRUST ME ON THAT ONE!) and take up all your time biggrin

if it happens on both his and his wifes, then it's probably not software related (could be a virus that spread on the network, but doubtful)

Thanks for that.
We've had a look at the privacy settings and they're OK.

Is that with the samet ISP then?
Yep.
We, in desperation, even turned off all the firewalls and security on both the computer and the Router and still no joy. DON'T WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO THIS AT HOME

Don't I know it lol Though Mainframe core dumps are slightly less fun...

Well guys, the bestest advice I can give in that case is, if all else fails, FORMAT, and start again.

He might just be doing that as we speak.

did you try dialup? from what you've said I'm convinced it isn't the PC, so wiping it wouldn't help

Try traces and Pingplotter first, this'll tell you if you are getting out from the machine / Router.. No point in formatting if the problem is outside you local system rolleyes

He is on Cable.
I am also of the opinion that it is not his PC and probably not his Router.
I was hoping that someone had seen this problem before and had a fix, or that someone worked for an ISP or BT and knew what was causing it.
I'll get him to try PingPlotter as that should tell us exactly where the problem lies...
It's got me stumped and it's a very, very long time since that last happened.

Ah, don't tell me, NT-Hell. I have known people with significant routing problems using NTL. My neighbour regularly gets 404 errors on random pages, but they generally clear up after a few days.
Try uplinking the rubinels and scuzzies should then reconambulate .

in that case, plug one of the PCs directly into the cable modem or digibox, and try that. then you know the router isn't at fault.
Normally 404 errors on ntl are due to DNS, in which case use someone elses dns server, but this one isn't that as you've used the IP address of the server biggrin
A fair bit of the stuff on this thread is beyond me, but John, when you're on the phone again to Tune, give him my best wishes - let's hope the problem gets sorted quickly, we miss him here.
Mike.
I honestly think the IPs been blocked by someone, somewhere (read ISP). Just need to prove it

Me thinks someone's cute little bottom is in need of some colour

to prove that, you'd need someone on the same ntl servers, although if they blocked it then I probably wouldn't get the page either, as I'd imagine it'd be countrywide biggrin
