I was thinking about some recreational activities which are predominantly male activities and I was wondering why they generally don’t appeal to women and yet men can become pretty much fanatical about them – I started with fishing.
After some thought I realised a few factors which may be key in making fishing a predominantly male pastime….
- If you catch something it is a chance to boast how big yours is.
- It is said to be a challenge to out smart the fish – so it is probably a fair challenge (have you seen the size of a fish brain?).
- Where else is it possible to pull something beautiful by wiggling your maggot?
- It mostly requires patience (that is the male ‘skill’ name for sitting around doing f-all)
My hobbie is military vehciles, I go to shows all over the country and its 99.9% men.
Its a good excuse to sit round the camp fire and talk a load of old cr*p.(as most men do!)
Home brewing is mine, ladysmaug likes the end result but not the mess I can create in the kitchen as part of the process
Fishing is a good excuse to get away from shitty soap opera's, house renovation programmes, quiz shows and the like. nothing wrong with sitting by the river relaxing.........
MOD EDIT: PLEASE READ THE SITE AUP REGARDING THE BIT I HAVE EDITED OUT!!

Ah remember the days of rod and reel, the old bamboo canalside.
No the real thing about coarse fishing is all the available crap you can buy to "help" you. Have you ever walked a canal bank recently? These guys have everything but the kitchen sink down there, and the night fishermen, well they are just solitary campers with double the gear.
