They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Remember in war soldiers dont have a choise
they have to do as they are told so we should
always remember they did in in defence of us.
If you see some old guy with loads of medals
this weekend shake his hand and say thank you.
It will make you feel good.
Thank you Sarah.
I hope everyone is wearing their poppy with pride, I make sure my children wear them too, it shouldn't be just the over 50's remembering...

I'm not over 50 and I remember with pride. My daughter is 16 and she's just been over to France and helped put a wreath on the actual gravesite. I remember my Nanna & Grandad standing on parade every year when they went to a memorial, with their medals on and tears in their eyes as they remembered what had happened, friends they'd lost.
I think of them every day because I miss them, but I'll be thinking of them even more so on Sunday because of what they and others did all those years ago.
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.
In Flanders field the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
~~By Major John McCrae, May 1915.~~

We are wearing our poppies with pride
Im remembering..Im attending a Parade on sunday with my children.....without them fighting and dying for us and our country...majority of us would not be here today ....so we must remember them!
its nothing to do with how old you are or if you remember the 'great' wars as they need our support and thoughts today as well

I don't understand your thoughts wencra... confused
It is very much about those who went through the past wars or have I misunderstood you?

always wearing a poppy with pride and shame on those that dont!!..we owe them so much n we should always remember those brave young men that gave everything to ensure our freedom.
Some lovely poems
I was chatting with a 30 something dutch couple last weekend, they were asking about the battle of britain. At the end of our chat they said 'its important we understand what happened because we (the dutch) owe so much to Britain.
I think it safe to say just about any one of us have some connection with wars in some way or other.. and as such will have lost some piece of our history to these tragic events..
A few minutes of our time.. a little of our cash or even a kind and worthy thought to those who sacrificed for us all to enjoy our lives as we do is a very small price..
I know I will spare a few thoughts come Sunday..
Good thread Sarah.. kiss

i agree with you but we are also losing soliders now, who supposedily are fighting for us
For the men and women who have fought and are fighting. On behalf of myself. Thank you for my children and the fact they are here now as they are.
Sunday will bring a very important very quiet two minutes in our house.

Why shame on those that dont?
I think wearing the poppy 'also' shows a universal unity of support in a common cause of peace. Whatever your race, colour, creed or religion a poppy and the wearing of such a symbol is a common bond mankind to mankind.
Showing respect and appreciation for what those who gave and give their lives. Rather than shame on those who dont wear one, More It's a shame if you dont wear one maybe dunno

I'm with you now xx
My eldest son won a commendation and certificate at school for his effort in Remembrance Week, he wrote a poem, made a beautiful poppy and enthusiastically joined in with the remembrance activities they've been doing all week. He'll also be marching with his cubs tomorrow.
He knows his Grandfather will be enormously proud of him as he is remembering and honouring all my father's lost colleagues from over half a century ago.
