As for the twelve points its got something to do in political loyalty going back to WW2. They were supporters of ours in the war and were cut off to trade by the Germans. We sent if my memory is correct something like 52 boats with supplies of which the Germans sunk 51 only the 1 boat got through but with enough supplies to tide the Maltese over. Hence there loyalty to us for our sacrafice.

"The famous British Tanker Ohio, which brought to Malta all sorts of supplies to the island, it is said that this vessel, and others with her saved the island, with all the supply they brought to the island known as the Santa Maria convoy, an answer to their prayers was, when it arrived with fresh supplies that came as a miracle, and as a God send, as the foodstuff reserves had been exhausted, everything had run short, the three ships entered the Grand Harbour on the eve of 's feast,it arrived on the 14th August 1942, they were followed the next morning with two other ships, five ships in all out of a convoy of fourteen, never less everybody was happy to see them, they had plenty to satisfy their needs nearly 55,000 tons of badly needed supplies, including ammunition and aviation oil,it was indeed a God send"
Thank heaven for google.

Read a lot about the islands but couldn't remember the ships name. The island got a medal for its efforts during the war, so the whole country was honoured.
I read a lot of history so when somebody puts something up that I remeber a bit about I google it to refresh. There was a tanker that got torpedoed.......the crew abandoned the ship and ended up in a small lifeboat. Two days later they see a ship. Lo and behold it was the one they abandoned and the fires had gone out. They reboarded her and sailed her to the UK. But I can't find that on google.

TWEEKY FFS!!!!!
I love the ESC. Am I the only person who watches it without the aid of alcohol, and wishes Wogan would shut up?
As for the UK ever winning it again: I have a cunning two-step plan. Part A is optional.
A. Start acting like we're a member of the EU.
B. Enter a song that isn't shite.

A - no comment
B - hasn't stopped anyone else winning so far!
I'm sure that one day the EU will stretch as far as the Antipodes and then the green and gold army will sweep all in its path! Go Aussie, Go!
Good to see you John.

The Ship in question was the SS San Demetrio, sailing as part of convoy HX-84 when it was attacked by the Admiral Scheer (an incident probably better known for the delaying action fought by HMS Jervis Bay). When Google fails, Wikipedia springs to the rescue. smile
DP - good to see you too! Grief, my two favourite blokes in the same thread.
Thought you had moved away! And what's with this 'other' account???
Hope you're well.

We're doing ok, not moved yet ( and don't know where we're going yet either). As for the name change, I'd got a bit fed up of everybody assuming I was some kind of pervert or having trouble spelling my name. smile
