Smear tests..........owwwww.

The women on here will know what I am talking about! I am currently sat on a very very soft pillow... Thank god I didn't jump my other half when he came round this afternoon for tea and tiffin...
I am in so much pain!!! I need sympathy!!! But I don't think I will get any from the men on here!!
Sorry.... moan over!!!!! smackbottom

I feel a chocolate hit coming on ...

I think it's a good idea to say at this point, particularly to anyone who is putting off having one, that they're not always like this - in fact, the only thing I've ever felt was embarrassed - and that was only when I was young.

You'll be fine MissK.. thank god it only comes round every 3 years!.. but as we all know it's a must and I know of a few people who've ignored them and to their peril x

Why was it so painful?
I've never had a painful smear. Altho i also hate going for them... I find then extremely embarrassing.
What i find funny tho is.. lots of females on here meet up with other fems for sexual experiences and we don't get embarassed at opening our legs then... So why do we when it comes down to a nurse doing a smear?

A few hours of discomfort is nothing compared to the pain of operations and more operations and seeing the pain in your child's/loved one's faces as you tell them you have no idea if the cancer will kill you.

My mam had cancer of the cervix, she's fine now, I don't know for sure 30 years ago if they had smears but they do now and they're a must!.
Miss K -I don't actually find them painful, just embarassing and uncomfortable as the tube thingy is freezing, but it's over in seconds and I'm now wondering if you've just had a one off bad experience? please don't let it put you off.

IMO it really shouldn't hurt that much..........
And if the nurse / doctor knows what they are doing it is over and done with in about 2 to 3 mins max if that.

For the past few years I've been having them every 6 months.
Most of them have been absolutely fine, quick, easy and free from any discomfort. As a few people have already said, it's really important to emphasise this to any woman who hasnt had a smear test yet.
The odd painful one i've had has been with particular nurses. My advice, get to know ur nurse, learn her manner and go with ur instinct. If u dont want her to do it dont be ashamed to ask for someone else.
Sorry ur uncomfortable now Misskitty, but think how much better u'll feel when ur know ur all healthy inside smile

i never had a pain full smear test.
wanst even in that much pain after having the full works done at the gu clinic.
or in fact when i had my coil inserted.
i think you need to mention this to your practice nurse cuse in my experience ive never known anyone to be in pain and especially hours after.

Hahaha. Now i'm not a great fan of ladies bits or how they look so maybe i'm not the person to ask, but surely that would def put u off? Looking at (and lets face it, smelling) all sorts in all conditions ! :crazy:

mine have never been painful , just occasionally mildly uncomfortable

I had cervical cancer when I was 30ish. At the time I was having yearly smears as I'd had abnormal cells when I was in my teens. My niece had cervical cancer in her 20s.
My best mates mum died of the same when my friend was just 14.
I've been on yearly smears since I was about 18. Only one has ever hurt. Miss K, I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but to everyone else- rest assured that this isn't common, and smears save lives :thumbup:

Hope you are feeling a little more comfortable now Kitty. Its not usual for smear tests to be painful. A little uncomfy yes, painful no.

Just adding my hear hears to this too. Am sure must've been a one-off as I have never had any pain at all from smears and I have had them fairly regularly.
And they are so worth it in terms of early diagnosis of problems.

you don't have a cervical smear as such, you have a vaultsmear. And should still have one every 3 years. (unless your hystericalectomy is for cancer reasons and then you have it initially every month and then every two and then three... etc..... )
in edit.. my mistake.. you should have a vault smear if you have had cancer. if you have had everything whipped out for 'womens things' (non-cancerous) then you are right- smear free....

Hmm, it may be worthwhile mentioning the pain to your GP, I don't think it's the norm to be sore.
In fact, i suppose it feels just like you'd expect from sticking a toothbrush up your fanny and twirling it round a couple of times, I don't think I've ever noticed any discomfort, but everyone has different experiences of pain, and sometimes if you are nervous or worried about it, that in itself can exacerbate pain, as can increased tension make the whole procedure a tad more tricky methinks!

same here, i have never had any pain, there shouldnt be any if he procedure is done right, but if you tense up it makes it harder for the smear to be done as the vaginal muscles work against the speculum that opens you up.
Te only thing ive had its hat :shock: oooohhhhhhh fator if they havent run the speculum under the warm water lol

I am a stickler for my smears as my mum almost died
from cervical cancer, so I ever miss one...
the only bad smear related incident I had was I once went a few months early for one....scatty forgetful brain couldnt remember when i was due for one....and the nurse was like..."no youre way to early for it...how odd we dont usually have women keen to have a smear"
she made me feel like I was some kind of perve for asking for one.....:shock: I MEAN...how very DARE she :shock

I hate the feeling of the speculum and the smear itself really hurts me sad

I've changed nurse and tried the female Doctor but its still as bad.
I will continue to go when I'm called and would go more often given the choice. If it saves my life, it is worth it :thumbup:

I don't like going but I do.... and our sugery nurse is the best (I went to school with her), last time I went I didn't feel a thing, didn't realise she'd done it!
When I had some blood tests done recently I noticed they now have a special chair, one of those with stirrups... don't like those chairs for some reason. So Im not looking forward to the next one!
Anyone had a smear done in one of those chairs? Does it make a difference?

Wow, didn't realise how much reaction this would provoke. I have to have yearly smear as I am in a high risk group, and they have always hurt since I started having them. Had abnormal smears the last two times, and the nurse reckons the pain is from cervical erosion.
I have lost people to various forms of cancer, including my brother, so because of genetics, have regular tests for everything under the sun. I would never ever put my life at risk, and would tell anyone who reads this that it is just my bad luck that I feel pain, the others on here who have replied haven't had a problem. So if you are putting it off, DON'T. It is honestly worth that bit of discomfort to find out if anything is wrong, and to get early treatment.
I think it hurt more today, as they did it a different way, they usually use a wooden scraper, but apparently now the best way to get a sample is to use a brush.. so the post about pushing a toothbrush... eek its making my eyes water thinking about it!
Seriously, don't put it off... if you're worried, like many have said, talk to the nurse or gp you're registered with...
And thanks all for replying xxxxx
