Anyone going to watch Kill it, Skin it, Wear it?
A friend of mine was really involved in all the demo's/protests in the eighties. I never thought it would make such a big come back again.
Do you think its cruel? Should or shouldn't we wear it?
I've never worn fur, but I have worn lamb skin (I think it was that) and once had a pair of kid shoes. At the time I didn't really think about what it was made of, I just liked the shoes and clothes.
Anyway, Im off to watch it....BBL!
Morally, I'd not wear anything that wasn't produced as a by-product from the meat industry. Let's face it, whilst some people do, we in the western world have no need to wear animal skins.
I had a Donkey Jacket once

Isn't there some phrase that ends with "...but it only takes one dumb animal to wear one"?

The leather used in shoes and bags doesn't come from the same pig/cow that your beef or pork comes from.
I do own leather shoes and bags ...... and to be honest I have no problem with that.

I think the full saying is: "It takes 40 animals to make a fur coat but it only takes one dumb animal to wear one"
But you can get two leather jackets out of one cow. Bargain

My opinion.
We breed animals to kill and eat them. I'm fine with that. I'm also fine with wearing their skins as leather. Not personally into fur and NEVER from wild/endangered species. Rabbits are fair game (pardon the pun) since they aren't even indigenous and were only introduced for hunting for food and fur.
There certainly isn't any justification in extending the animal's suffering beyond a quick death.
And wearing expensive fur is the same as wearing anything just to show wealth - unattractive by its nature.
A point in favour? Leather and fur are biodegradeable (eventually) and far more so than PVC/acrylic/polyester.
My gripes with the animal skin business?
The animals for leather are generally different from the ones we eat - that's wasteful.
The shops don't call it rabbit or sheep or cow - they have 'special' names for it. That's just pretentious.

 completely & totally!! kiss
Not remotely pretending to be an expert, but I'd always thought that most leather was a by product- this is from PETA

I don't like the thought of wearing leather that's not a by product, and to that end I think I only own one leather item. I don't like the thought of animals being raised to be slaughtered for something I really don't remotely need at all.
However, there is a need (especially where I live) to cull certain species. I never thought it would happen, but I've recently become a shit hot shot when it comes to taking out pigeons.

killing an animal for a single purpose of making clothing is unjust...

Wasteful - yes, but unjust? Why?

Sorry - bit late for clear typing. I was wondering why killing an animal for a single purpose is unjust. Is it more just to have more than one use for the dead animal? I'm not trying to sound picky - just trying to get a sense of your train of thought here.
I'm with Varca on this one.... I am vegetarian, though to my shame not vegan, but don't agree with killing animals just to wear them..

Having once been a strict ethical vegetarian for 14 years, I don't think I dare respond to this other than to say No. No Way. Not ever. To kill an animal purely for the purposes of it becoming a fashion accessory makes my blood boil... Right I'm stopping now and stepping away from the keyboard smile Tis just too emotive a subject for me hon but I am sure you will get some interesting and varied responses kiss
Never have and never would wear fur, I prefer fur on the animals, looks a hell of lot nicer there...
I can't even stand fake fur or animal prints, when my daughter was little my mother-in-law insisted on buying her animal print clothes always returned them to the shop she bought them and got something new, took me ages to get her to understand that I just didn't like it.....
I shave the fur, I trim the fur.
lp
I used to own a silver fox fur coat that was bought as a present for me in the early eighties. It felt beautiful and made me feel special.......BUT.....I never ever wore that coat and felt completely comfortable. There was always a very uneasy feeling inside me when I wore it.
Unless you live in the Arctic...fur is not necessary and is worn purely for image reasons in my opinion. The person that bought me the present was and still is very image concious and likes to show off....so buying that present for me was his way of showing the world that he was something and my wearing it was wrong on so many levels.
Strangely enough I have never forgotten that coat and never will because animals died to make it and me remembering them and never repeating that mistake and hopfully teaching my daughter not to, makes their death a little easier to live with..
Please say that last paragraph made sense ! it does to me but it's very important that you understand what I'm trying to say....

It's funny the human race how hypocritical it can be at times.
There are people who won't eat meat but quite prepared to wear things made from animals. Leather is a prime example.
I watched the programme and its like a lot of things, we know where the meat comes from, but if we dont think about it, then it is ok to eat. The fur thing I am not sure about to be honest.
Maybe people should wear more fox fur as that way it would keep the population down, as we are running alive with them. dunno
The fur trade is like a lot of things where there are arguements on both sides, for me I cannot see a problem with it IF the animal is killed humanely. We kill for food so might as well use the fur or skin too maybe?
People have a very high feeling on this subject, and if you are against the killing of animals for the fur, then surely you are also against the killing of animals for meat, or for the advances in medicine that benefit us all? If people are only against killing animals for the fur, then is that not hypocritical if you then eat meat on a Sunday lunchtime? :dunno:
If it tastes good I eat it, if it looks good I'll either wear it or look at it.
Meat tastes good so I eat it, fur looks pretty naff so I neither wear it or bother looking at it.
It has nothing to do with the fact that both products start with faces. As human beings we are always killing something, that's the way it is, that's the way it'll stay. What I think or believe won't alter that one little bit.

I suppose that it may be viewed as hypocritical. It depends on the reasoning/ethics/logic for those who are vegetarian or meat eaters.
I do eat meat, but I won't wear fur. I can't survive without eating but I can survive without a fur coat. Thats the difference between the two.

If you can call it surviving :P
Never felt neccesary for me to wear fur, keep as little on as possible i say :P
As for meat i dont need it, but i like it. I understand both sides
What i dont find silly is these people who dont eat/want meat would still like to see field fulls of cows and sheep, they are there to be slaughtered for their meet if we dont buy the meat - there wont be the animals in the fields as farmers cant afford to keep them, they are running a business not an animal sanctuary

Cows and sheep would still be there but in smaller numbers as their milk and wool are still useful. The meat production would obviously be unnecessary and the fields would be used for crops and other products.

That is true splendid.. Not long after I joined SH I posted a thread about being vegetarian, I can't remember how to do links or I would put it on here. I am surviving fine without meat, in fact I am a lot healthier!

Yup there will still be animals produced for milk and wool but no where near the amount we have now, wool is a dying trade though, with centrally heated houses, easier to care for man made materials, and warmer weather people dont really need woollen clothes to keep warm like they used to. I also think alot the fields would be sold/rented to land deveopers as it will be more profitable than any crop they grow
