Remember that lesson in Careers (now PHSE) where the teacher would combine all your talents, good points and 'best' subjects and then come up with what you would do for the rest of your life?
My boy just had his - seems it's still a 'good' way to work it out (not!)
I think mine was hairdresser or carer. What was yours - can ya remember?

As I recall not a lot! Think I was probably just seen as a waste of space at school! haha Somethings never change eh! rolleyes lol
I remember being told i'd be ideally suited to becoming a chef. I even toook O levels in Food and nutrition, enrolled at catering college to do my city and guilds.
Stands to reason I end up as a Telecoms engineer doesn't it! rotflmao
Did any get told they'd make an ideal careers teacher? Love to hear what they do now!

Not a careers teacher but a teacher was what i was enough 14 years latter, after trying a number of other options I qualified as a teacher, though i moved on pretty quick!!
If I remember correctly our career guider (the woodwork teacher) would arrange for us to go to visit 3 potential employers/industries as a guide to what we should expect.
I was sent to a shoe factory, Boots Chemists (retail sales) and a knitwear manufacturer.
My form teacher said that it was a waste of time and I should have been shown the Job Centre and where to sign-on confused
I bumped into my old form teacher a few years back, well when I say bumped into... they were applying for a part-time job to bump up their salary. Oh did I enjoy that interview evil lol
Goodness that was years ago but I still remember it.
An archaeologist :jagsatwork: , well that didn’t work out :giggle: , but I enjoy watching time team does that counts? confused: ?
:smile2:
Can't remember all of the options, but one was Passenger Transport Planning, working out where bus routes should be, that sort of thing. They said to use my skill with numbers.
I'm still good with digits!!!!

That's so cool! Well done you! I would love the same experience with my English teacher, arrogant twat that he was!!!
Well at least here you had some career guidance! In my country it is customary for the children to do what their parents are doing, so lawyer breeds lawyer, doctor breeds doctor and brickie breeds brickie. Not much opportunity to cross over for a lot of people. And even less chance for an internship!
I was a little shit at school and was told that I would be a good window dresser. confused
Last year I put a profile up on friends reunited talking about my career and one of my former teachers emailed me and asked if I was taking the piss!!!
lol
Well I told my Careers Advice woman that i wanted to be an air stewardess (now called Cabin Crew) but was told i was too short as the height regulations were at 5'5 back then. As as was at the top of my English class, was told to go for more secretarial skills, which i did and loved.
Now thou, im looking at become Cabin Crew againl, although ive just re-measured my height and im too short for the 5'2 regulation now in, but this can vary depending on which airline and plane you are assigned to, so im looking into that now. confused

Make sure you measure yourself first thing in a morning as you're taller when you get out of bed than when you get back in at night smile
School was pretty cool. Can remember them telling me I had strong leadership skills.
Though to be honest that was after the English/Afrikaans (bi-lingual school) revolution type riot I lead that day.
Everyone else seemed to believe I'd be a nobody, and with my institutionalised mentality prison would be the best option sad
To them I say, look at me now fuckers :P
:thrilled:
Well ........
I wanted to be a nurse but was talked out of it by my mum. My careers officer was shite and wasn't interested in engaging me so I was one of those "awkward" kids. She basically told me to get a job in an office until I got married (or pregnant)!!!!!!!!!. I did train as a Secretary though .. she was right, but when I worked for her boss and had to handle certain redundancy issues, she wasn't so flippant with me!
I've been home with the kids for 4 years, returned back to work, quit and will be training as a Doula and Midwife over the next few years smile
My one year, 5 year and 10 year plans are set biggrin

A doula? Did not realise that needed special training unless you are referring to something totally different from what I understand? (In my language doula means household slave biggrin )
I was told I'd make a god vet - wish I'd listened and stuck in - just paid a vet bill for the horses grrrr!
Was also told my ability to adapt to situations and good manners were ideal as a receptionist.
To be honest still unsure what career would be ideal for me and after trying various types of jobs I'm looking for a change in direction.

It is exactly that ... a doula is a now a modern word for people who help new mums, either as birth partners or post natal support .... so whilst generally doula's need no help there are certain things you need to know to be a birth support partner.
I also want insurance etc so need to get some form of licensing.

At one stage I was told I'd make a good electrician or electronics technician even though I am colour blind rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao: banghead :banghead: :banghead: :silly: :silly: :silly: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
At school, it was suggested to me, to build a career within the music industry, orchestral (I had an alto sax growing out of the tips of my fingers.)
I always kept music as an elective while in college (studied Broadcasting, Radio and Television) but sadly, blew most of my third year grant on partying.

Careers Twat (CT); good morning have a seat. So what career are you thinking of following?
Me: I am going to go to college and do Alevels in Art, Dt and Chemistry, then I am going to either do and art degree and a pgce or an education degree and become a primary school teacher.
CT : (hideous air sucking noise) Fsuuuuuuuuuu, hmmm, well, that is a difficult career path you have chosen
Me: Yes, I know but I am capable of getting the grades and its what I have always wanted to do.
CT: (hideous sucking noise while looking perplexed and confussed at a 16yr old who knows what she wants to do with her life) fsuuu, erm, well have you ever considered anyother careers because people very rarely do what they set out to do. Erm... I mean there are plenty of options open to you....
Me: Such as?
CT: (cue the sucking noise again, I'm beginning to wonder if he has a saliva disorder and produces too much which he has to suck back, or even loose false teeth which are kept in by the pressure of the low hannibal lecter style noise)
Well try this programme on the computer. It's really quite simple and you just click the answer that applies to you the most. (really??? Like I have never seen multiple choice questions before confused )

Me: Oh, ok then.
As I sat there completeing this programme on the pc, one of those click tests where it tells you which job you'd be good at, he is busy looking through his training manual. I was obviously a challenge and an anomally that he not encountered before. Then the programme showed the results>>>
My chosen profession should be as an............... Undertaker! :?
CT: Ooooohhh, How wonderful. An undertaker! (as he clasps his hands together in a kind of style elated way. I looked at him as if he had just gone insane)
He then tried persueding me not to do teaching and become a florist instead! rolleyes Think there must have been a shortage cos he tried persueding several of us to become undertakers or florists. Unless he had an obsession with burials etc... Might account for the hideous sucking noise and died black hair.
I was supposed to be a meterologist... ho hum!
Stephen Fry filled out his form for the schools career officer, and wrote in the 'what job would you most like to do' box: School Careers Officer
He later found out that the careers officer had written in the margin next to this 'comedian eh?', and takes great pleasure in the fact that he is probably the only person eve to take the careers officer's advice.

If I pulled myself together they suggested mathematician, no field area or anything, just a mathematician (how quickly I lost those skills) otherwise I would end up in the gutter where I obviously belonged. :P I'm sure they loved me really.
Neither happened, what a shock

'They' told me to be a teacher. I said 'no thanks' and left school to train as a chef. Worked as a chef, then in shops and offices for a few years. Went back to university as a mature student, got my degree and I am now....a teacher confused And I love it lol
