I'm not materialistic and I don't 'do' labels for the sake of it, and my Nan always told me never to skimp on shoes or looking after my eyes. lol
I only tend to pay a little more for things like food, shoes, clothes, toiletries etc as I perfer to buy Fair Trade, ethical, recycled etc when ever possible. My only naughty vice is perfume (not tested on animals) and some Timerberland boots - it's surprisingly difficult to find decent walking boots made from recycled tyres, denim and old t-shirts.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not jumping on some fashionable bandwagon. I was buying Fair Trade coffee before Chris Martin even joined Coldplay.
Having said all that if I can get the same quality cheaper I will.
God knows where I thought I was going with this ramble. confused
Anyway... sadly you don't always get what you pay for, but if you do your research and don't get blinded by advertising you can find a lot of decent bargains.

Actually you've reminded me of another one - meat, particularly poultry.
I stopped buying intensively reared chicken a couple of years ago when I started to read up on the production methods. Partly this is because I'm not keen on battery farming, but mostly because I think that a chicken that's been able to move around, engage in natural behaviours and possibly even occasionally eat the odd worm rather than pelleted chicken food, is likely to be much better for me (given that all battery chickens are of a variety that's genetically obese, it's not surprising that their meat has similar levels of saturated fat to commercial beefburgers), and might even, dare I say it, taste of chicken, rather than fishmeal or soya. I'm not sure paying for organic chicken over plain free-range is worth the additional premium, but if it makes you feel better then I guess it's worth it.
We buy all of our cleaning produces online from the manufacture, we find they are better quility and last longer cause there concentrated so cost per use is great,
Face it...
England is a rip off full stop, Tax is the major issue, you get taxed on your wage then you get tax on what you buy. you get taxed where you live and taxed to travel.
You want advice on what too buy, save up, get on your travel taxed transport to Jersey and buy your good from their. It's the only Island between England and France where Its Entire island is tax free... You will notic that you can buy a pair swis k trainers from there for about and buy exactly the same pair anywhere else for about
The other alternative would be to buy of a back of a waggon ;)
Once you learn what is important and what isn't and what is a rip off and what is worth having and sacrificing for then usually you will get value for your money.
I try and choose things for their real life value not their brand value.
Oh my hot tip on the beans buy a tube of tomato puree and your preferred brand of supermarkets value beans. Add a dollop of Puree to the beans in the saucpan and a knob of butter or margarine depending on your preference and hey presto instant brand beans flavour at a fraction of the cost.

I prefer to buy some brand names because I like quality. I don't mind spending upwards of £30 on trainers for my kids because I know they (like me) wear them a lot and I want them to be comfortable. Shoes for me can be £60 trainers/£25 Faith bargains (eh Mrs DL?)/ Shoezone workies..depends what I see biggrin
Clothes-wise I am a bit of a mix, I have some Roxy and Miss Sixty jeans but I also have a pair of Cherokee jeans. My kids have some expensive (best) clothes and they have some cheaper (everyday) clothes. School uniform comes out of the catalogue, which is more expensive but when they wear them so often I think this is sensible economics.
Cosmetics wise..I like to buy Body Shop foundation as it is about the only one that doesn't make me come out in hives confused But then I use Avon powder and a mix of eyeshadows/lipsticks but usually something like Max Factor/Rimmel-not too pricey, but I will look carefully at the product before buying it. I prefer to buy Lush products for the bathroom as I have dodgy skin :? But I do buy different shampoos each time as my hair is long and coloured and I like to see what works best (loving the Aussie range again atm). Perfume should cost money and I don't mind paying a bit to smell/feel nice ;)
Grocery-wise I am the BOGOF queen :D I prefer to buy the well known brands, but I love the BOGOF offers. OK, so I don't need 63 packets of cereals..but hey they were cheap ;)
I might be a marketers' dream in some respects..but would I pay £100 for a handbag ? Not in this life ;)
Mr fifty has funny feet ( you can here them laughing in the next room ) he only wears clarkes shoes and when in jersey he bought 2 pairs for the price of one on the mainland.
Otherwise we go to the clarkes factory outlet at Doncaster lakeside.
Beans... has to be Branston.
Dog food.. we are in the pet trade and sell 15kg bags of dog food. one manufacturer provides 4 different brands but with the same make up of ingredients and price ranging from £20 down to £8 !
Drugs... Beware of unknown or cheap brands. There are some forgeries out there !
the same goes for replacement car parts like clutches and brake pads.
Mr fifty bought my mother perfume from the pound shop and it has lasted years.....
she doesnt use perfume lol

I like to buy branded home entertainment kit, but I've finally learned my lesson.
My first dvd play cost me hundreds and I bought a play station2 the first week they were released . Both times I've paid through the nose to get branded kit first. Now i play the waiting game to get better prices. I'll be getting a large LCD tv only when they have come down to a decent price! probably in next years sales.
Some time you just have to wait to get the price that you want.
