There are too many things wrong with this although in some way I'd like community spirit and pride that a "military/ structured" organisation brings.
Where do you house or group the people?
Who funds it?
Who mans it, admin/teaching/instructing/maintanence?
I'm against national service or a conscription of any kind for the forces, some of the kinds of things quoted on this thread were included in the CCRF for TA(until the focus changed and moved onto training to support continuing ops), you arent going to get community spirited(sarcasum mode off) people signing up to a home guard type affair for emergancies......again funding.
I dont like the idea of education being available to "them"(general term and not derogatory) in terms of 3r's, vocational, or trade...school and FE is there already why duplicate it and why offer it if "they" turn it down the first time round?
Scouts/brownies, Army Cadets, Air training core, Naval equivalent are all dotted about but need parents nudging their kids into something other than out the door and onto the street because they cant be arsed bothering inputting alittle effort engaging with their sprogs.
Instill some self worth early on.....I also note the lack of decent open spaces for kids locally.
I might not post much but when I do it vomits out of my fingers so to speak......feel free toignore if you think I'm talking bollocks.

Is anyone accountable for the successes and failures of the campaign in Afghanistan? It would be interesting to actually know what the strategy is in that country - rather than just hear every day of further casualties.

I'm not sure what to write taking into account the rest of the thread so I thought I'd stick to the OP.
The first sentance is too general...Gov for a start for accountability.
Failures? ....to fail your need a target, what is the target?..strategy is the means to attain the target, Casualties....unfortunatly any conflict will have them sad but true.
Personally the tgt for me is to train a ANA force to take care of its own Gov's needs and political agenda and leading to a withdraw for us, beyond that is Gov/foreign office policy.
I've done a little driving in France, on the autoroutes the speed limit is 130kph(80mph) in the rain it drops to 110kph(70mph).....speed in brackets a rough guess.
More or less everyone I seen stuck to it and the lane disapline is fantastic, otherwise you have irate(sp?) french right up your chuff gesticulating.
Most speeders had GB stickers on.
On our motorways I think making motorway driving part of the test should be introduced, the biggest problem is poor lane disapline.
Drive along the M62 from 60 to birchwood and pretty much everyone is doing the same speed no matter which lane...those in the "fast" lane MUST drive no less than 5M behind the other causeing accordian effect. rolleyes

just had a text this morning informing that 1 night a month is on quarter pay followed by another 1 asking who wants to gan ski ing

Sounds about right....I'm waiting for some info, not too fussed to be honest I've commited to filling my time with other stuff for the rest of the year.
We are on 2nights a month anyway to complete matts(god knows how that worked out), maybe having lads on potl from herrick means we're funded slightly differet(could be making this up as it is way above my payscale).
Although we have been able to fund 3 "2 week challange" type courses for recruits and one has just finished....retention
Played the steel drums at school( not really an instrument, if you can remember songs and sequences then its easy).
Have a washburn accoustic guitar gathering dust, I can make noise on it that sometimes resembles a song(if I dont sing).
I dont practice enough and I have no musical ability....you wont see me in the charts, more like a nutter on youtube.

like i said 1 lad aint been in for x amout of months due to work now has been told to go back thru recruitment when he has done 6 tours

For me that would = OC interview or kit back in the stores the cheeky feckers!
One point which I spotted was huge and a main reason for the popularity of BNP supporters or disaffected viewers/voters was the argument between Straw and the Tory asian lady(sorry I cant remember her name) that:
The labour immigration policy is working....cue
Straw: yes it is
Tory Asian lady: no it isnt
Straw: yes it is.
Ferkin pathetic and a window into why voters decide bugger it I'm going for something totally different!
Northeastcoupleuk.......any of our bashes or activities now are run by company funds to keep some cohesion come april when the financial year begins and the bugets are replened.
My feelings are if the forces are to be kept in theatre then fund them and the support properly however carrying on with "whatever is at hand" and a can do attitude is what makes our army stand above most others.
Moving money from one hand to the other to fund afghan isnt what I or I assume anyone within the forces wants but a correct level appropriate to the tasked being asked of it/us.
I wouldnt want to deply as an MFC having done no Mor shoots for 18months(since I last shot(81mm), more by the next range)!
If we didnt have the economic situation that we have the regular army wouldnt have such good recruiting figures to replace the people either PVR'ing or unfortunatly injured.

Also I think the panel appearing with him are a bit weak, and I think a much more suitable candidate could have been found than Jack Straw.

Jack has had a few decent jobs in his time and I'm SURE he got them through vision and skill.
If LieBour wish to be blase about this then I dont care either.....note the sarcasm. biggrin
If there is going to be a firing squad let Hazel Blears be next inline along with those who made mistakes on thier expenses!
Other idiots are allowed to speak so why not him.
He is leader of a party that has elected members however much it isnt liked

all training has now been cancelled ,last week a lad who has been on 6 tours ,and aint been in for 11 months due to working away was told he now has to go back thru the basic training what a waste of money for some one who has been there and done it ,there are meetings all over the ta centres this week for all the cut backs on training everything in lockdown but theres letters and texts(sent to all ta members phones now)asking for dates for deployment.

In addition to above, we've had a 20% cut a the start of the financial year(courses cancelled and only authorised ones in support for next years
FTX).ALL training cut except two tuesdays a month for MATTS(tests ) catchup.
Only the people who've been booked onto or had a course cancelled and done most of the available days can qualify for bounty.
I've read the emails and delivered it to out PL I'm just a screw, headshed and CoC couldnt be bothered!!
We've just got back a coy from afghan who've suffered multiple injuries with luckily only 1 shot(not seriously thank god)(another on FTRS hit the papers with a round through his helmet(unscathed)).
We're supposed to provide for our reg BN next yer for herrick and another FP coy in roughly 12months.
Those in reg Bns who read this it IS NOT a whinge, feet on the ground are what matter not stab vs arab we both need each others support.
I was going to stick my hand up for next years herrick but not with this level of none training.
Pity.
IED threats have been covered and the kit is top notch now.
Hmmmmm, daft but pick whatever you are into.
However arctic monkeys, Foo fighters, Rocky theme and Rocky 5 running in snow in russia(got the song havent a clue what it is!) bit of dance(ages so quickley),
Lost Prophets,Queen.
I try to seperate my fav upbeat songs with a few normal ones what have my fancy at the time, then when out walking/jogging you always have a pickmeup every 8 to 10 mins or so to spur you on
Really must update mine as I've got some total crap on it atm!
I've got an accoustic and a cheapo electric.
I've had a few lessons mainly because I bought books and couldnt fathom what the bugger I was doing.
This was a few years ago and now the guitar is a pretty thing in the living room that gets dusted as I've forgot almost everything because I didnt have the time to practice.
The teacher I had said a few things, decide what you want from the lessons ie what you want to learn to do.
What songs you like and from that with advice, you will find out what guitar would be best suited to you.
Most good teachers will have a selection of guitars you can use/practice on to find yourself.
What stuck in my head was the painfull fingertips.
I just wish I was a natural.
Although I'm shithot on rockband!
Would everyone please stop talking about taxing KFC.....its sending me into a nervous panic
Not bought a paper for ages(except for news of the world, mainly for the tv guide).
I've not really watched the tv news much either since the "we're all doomed" housing market crash, banking muppets dragged over the coals...well sort of rolleyes
I think I must tune it out when them topics are talked about.
Mike and the mechanics, in the living years.
Lost Prophets rooftops, ear splitting full volume!
Has been mentioned already
Adagio for strings,
Boccelli and Brighman(time to say goodbye)
