Thanks for those top class posts. I've read a fair bit on this subject in recent weeks and that is the best view of it I have come across. Very moving and very true - good on you, fella! I'm saddened to hear what happened to your father. Like you, I have seen these deaths first-hand and wouldn't wish it on anyone. :cry:

As a smoker, I'd say the ban is a good thing... all the smokers can huddle together outside and chat each other up. Fantastic!!!
Micheal Martin, the Irish health minister who introduced the ban, said last year the law had spurred a new form of dating -- with smokers striking up conversations outside bars and clubs.
Someone I knew as a lad (no, it wasn't me!) put their fella in a milk bottle and managed to get themselves stuck in it. He called an ambulance, as I remember. 
I remember seeing some tv show years ago about people arriving in A&E with all manner of strange things lodged up their rear ends etc..

I'd just like to agree with Kit - what a great guy you have - it really does give you faith to know that there are decent fellas like him who will stand up for people in trouble. And, most importantly, it's great news that he's on the mend! I'm sure you must be mightily relieved...

'appen Yorkshire is just very very big! I heard that West Yorkshire alone is bigger than Lincolnshire, England's second county.

I'm new so I could be off the mark here but... my impression is that there are so many single men that the numbers are stacked against you. A woman will place an ad and be swamped with replies within days. I don't know why a woman would even reply to a single man's ads when she can place her own. And if you reply to hers, you're one of many many many. I guess a good profile / mail and following PP's advice of persisting away is all you can do...
