WELL DONE England
Nope I don't care what you say, so far so good, the last 16 to make it are by no means easy pickings, they are all good teams in thier own right, any win or draw is a good resul and making it to the last and top 8 is a good achievement for any Nation, there are a lot of Countries that didn't get into the top 16 and 8 of them that got no further.
Will they progress, I hope so, but at least there is no embarassment, there are no stupid red cards, and the effort has been excellent from all the players, could they do better, couldn't everyone ? only Germany have really shone higher than England so far, all the others have been much on a par with us, some good games, some good results some that could have been better, some luck and some badluck for everyone, a brilliant recovery against Sweden a team we haven' beaten in donkeys years (198something wasm't it) a job well done against Ukraine a nation on thier home ground and desperate to stay in the competition with a good result against France, there were many that predicted far worse a start.
It is easy to knock them but credit where credi is due, now if our Olympians do half as well as they did last time this will have been an excellent year for sport in the UK.

Tonight will be tense unenjoyable and stressful, win or lose lol I cant imagine whats going to happen in this game possesion wise dunno these two could almost nulify each other and generate a damp squid maybe settled on a set piece or penalties :scared: I am pinning my hopes on the fact that England Germany semi finals are almost fated biggrin

And I wasent far off with my prediction. The only variation is Italy rose to the occasion where as England maintained the status quo. Somewhere along the line England have to learn how to play football again and maintain possesion. The problem these days is England players are parts of multi country club squads. Within those squads they fulful specific roles and the inadaquacies are maybe not so noticeable. A lot of players can leave the club team and then play "football" at the national level. This seems not to be the case for English players. Spirit, resolve, togetherness and organisation are all great but somewhere along the line you need some kind of consistent team football with an improved level of possesion. You cannot conceed 60-65% possesion and expect to win tournaments. I think its an achievement that we were actually the second best team in 3 of the 4 games we played in yet excluding penalties we didnt lose a match. Imagine how dangerous we would be with 60% possesion?
It could be a base to build on but then Roy may well just keep it as it is  Stand out players Steven Gerrard, John Terry, Scott Parker. Problem there is these guys are going to be way long in the tooth by the time WC 2014 arrives.
Very impressed by Scott Parker

I thought we played well, just not as good as Italy thou sad
I thought SG, JT and SP played well.
No footie for a while now ... what will i do with my time :(
We only played well in the sense of a backs-against-the-wall rearguard action. The gulf between the two teams was embarrassing, it was like watching a Premier League team against a Conference side. Had we won on penalties it would have been a total travesty.
This is the worst England team I have seen in my lifetime and we are now seeing the consequences of 20 years of saturating the Premier League with foreign imports. We don't have any quality midfield players, Gerrard and Lampard excepted and they are both at the wrong end of their careers. Where is the next generation of English midfielders?
If Hodgson didn't realise how hard the job was, he will now.
I agree with all the post Italy match comments posted, the players that have really shone in this years euro competition seem to be predominantely those that play in the Premiership but sadly from abroad, we train them well
And yes we can maintain the best league in the world but not create the same level of commitment, teamwork, and abilities when we form a totally English team, so I say again something I said in a previous thread, we need to get the England squad together more out of season for training as a National Team, not just in friendly matches against other nations but against each other, I know the injury worries and other problems Managers worry about but it is the only way we will ever solve our problems and it would help clubs as well.
Doubt it will ever happen but wish there was a way to do it.

Is it training though or the fact that we now dont generate or more likely dont develop the same quality of players we once did? Once again possibly due to the influx of international players bought to play in the premiership always taking the place of the next up and coming English talent. For arguments sake lets say England have always had fairly decent defenders and world class goal keepers. From my own point of view dont think we are doing too bad their at this stage. Midfielders and strikers though different issue altogether. Compared to competitions where we did well our squad list for Euro 2012 is very under whelming. The current England squad is a collection of players that play a bit part often sub role for thier club side and big names who in all honesty have vastly under performed at international level for many years. The following list of names are the type of players we no longer seem to have
Hoddle
Waddle
Barnes
Beardsley
Gasgoigne
Lineker
Shearer
Owen
Ruthless strikers and Midfielders who can take a man on. This seemed to be strangely lacking in Euro 2012. I sum it up by saying I could name my best ever post 66 England top X1 without giving any consideration to any of the current squad at all. Gerrard accepted is a great player and had a good tournament but in his overall career has mainly unimpressed at international level. How we get any kind of flare into this England squad is a mystery to me thats If Roy is even interested in adding any as flare is not exactly his strong point.
At this point in time I cant say I am looking to Brazil with any great hope. Should qualify ok though. Think Roys tactics will be more than good enough for qualification against lesser nations (And havent I just jinxed that lol )
I know a secret about football ..... I may tell you all later (hint: it has nothing to do with snipers)

I totally agree with your doubt that this sort of thing will never happen.
Why would a Frenchman, Scotsman, or an Italian want to help improve the England team????
Maybe to currie favour with the English fans, nah take the money and run its football.
Meanwile, can I just point out
England were unbeaten this time
Italy outplayed us, but could not beat us, 2 hours of football during which they had possession for most of the time, they had a bus load more attempts at scoring than us, yet they could not score, the defence held strong, the keeper stood fast and the midfield and forwards came to the aid of thier team members, it may not be memorable, it may not be the way to win matches but it is a credit to them of sorts.
Most say Italy deserved to win the penatly shoot-out, and I can understand why they would say that, but had England won it would be because they held fast against an opponent worthy of scoring but couldn't.
Let's not forget that by listening to the media stories of "dumped out of europe", "total failure" and "rubbish".
Personally I'm happy that we can look back at the England team this tournament and be proud of their efforts. In the past the team have lacked passion and haven't given us fans much to get behind, but you can't question the spirit in this tournament. I'm filled with cautious optimsm.
I think Roy has laid down some solid foundations that will stand us in good stead in the future, hard-work, team spirit ad difficult to beat. Now we can build on it and close the skill gap to the top international teams
1st post ever! Thought I'd try and comment on something I actually know about as a first step, footie seemed a safe bet lol
I think its a base to build on it just remains to be seen if the English players can improve enough or not in the departments they lacked. Roy will of course be key to that in his selections and tactics.
I think we played reasonably well, just that some other teams played better and they then got through, but our players have nothing to be ashamed off, they put in effort and passion. Hopefully under Roys guidance they will improve for the next competition smile

Not all players arriving from abroad are superstars, not all players cost millions (Schmeichal cost half a million when he arrived at OT)
Any person who thinks he knows everything and cannot learn will never be the best that they can be.
The Premiership is acknowledged to be the best league in the world, players arriving here of any standard will learn things by playing in the Premiership if you think that we cannot teach even the best footballer something new here in England then you don't know much about footballm yes we teach them well.

Hello MidsCouple24,
You're right; I don't know a lot about football. That's by choice by the way. I equate football (and most of the crap TV, known as reality TV) to the gladiator shows the Romans used to put on to please and placate the plebs. But that’s something for another thread.

Acknowledged by whom? No, please don't answer that. I can guess what you're going to say.
I highlighted the “we teach them well” bit in your previous post because it sounded to me like you were trying to get credit (on behalf of England) for the talent of foreign players. If that’s not what was intended I apologise. I’m only a bloody foreigner after all and English is not my first language so I tend to get the subtleties and nuances of written English wrong from time to time.
However, if I were to follow your argument that England teaches great football how come England doesn’t manage to win many international tournaments? Are you suggesting that there is no actual talent in this country so that we have to rely or rather the Premier League has to rely on foreign players to become an “acknowledged” best league in the world?
Following your argument also, I’ll inform my Spanish friends that they have England to thank for that they won three consecutive international tournaments since a lot of Spanish players, as far as I know, have played or currently play in English football teams.
By the way, did England teach the Spanish the tiki-taka as well? Oh no, sorry, please don’t answer that either.
Lastly, I’m not trying to criticise English football or their players and I offer my humble apologies if someone takes offense. As I said before I don’t follow football at all, apart from international tournaments (they are a bit political aren’t they?) so I’m not qualified to state how good or bad or talented English or foreign players are and that wasn’t my argument in the first place.
Whether the Premier League is the best in the world or not I have not got a clue, if you say they are then that’s fine I’ll take your word for it. I just wish Englad would win a lot more than they do because believe it or not I made England my home and I do cheer for England when they play abroad.

I am similar to you, often talking about subjects I freely admit to knowing little about, that is one of the reasons I like to discuss them here in the forums, because I generally find that someone here will know something about the subject and be able to enlighten me, some know a little some know a lot but always I take on board what they say, it does not always change my mind about a subject but at least I feel better positioned to make a judgement when I have more factual information.
What makes us different is that when people enjoy something that is different to that which I enjoy I am not abusive to them, I don't call them plebs (actually defined as a member of a despised social class, a commoner, a member of the plebs of ancient Rome. Also low-born, undisinguished, vulgar) I simply accept that they enjoy different forms of entertainment to me.

Acknowledged by footballers, supporters and football managers all over the world, this is why rich people from all over the world spend fortunes buying English clubs, this is why players from abroad come to play in the Premiership despite the salaries being lower (though still huge) than in many other countries, this is why the Premiership is given more slots in the Champions league and why when they lose out in that league they are given additional places in the next european competition.

Yep that just about covers it, we do bring out the talent in foreign players when they play in the Premiership, partly because they get a chance to play against so many players from other countries and thier own countries, something you will not see in such quantities (if any quantity) in South American leagues, African leagues, in Sweden, Norway, China, the USA, Russia, Czechoslavkia etc, where many of these foreign players come from or even in many maindland european countries.
However, if I were to follow your argument that England teaches great football how come England doesn’t manage to win many international tournaments? Are you suggesting that there is no actual talent in this country so that we have to rely or rather the Premier League has to rely on foreign players to become an “acknowledged” best league in the world?
Of course I believe we have talent in England, but as I have said in other threads I believe our players spend too much time playing alongside foreigners and not enough time working together as a squad. Until this changes, no, we do not have the talent to win at international level (in my humble opinion) I also believe that the British Media leaves them feeling that they are going to lose before they get on the coach, take teams like Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, they believe they can win every football match and therefore they rarely lose, you have to believe in yourself, this is why English clubs do so well in the Champions League, they believe in themselves and they are allowed to do so (to a certain extent but the British Media coverage of Chelsea in last seasons Champions League is proof of what I say but luckily Chelsea proved them wrong)
Following your argument also, I’ll inform my Spanish friends that they have England to thank for that they won three consecutive international tournaments since a lot of Spanish players, as far as I know, have played or currently play in English football teams.
A very good idea and one which I am sure that those in Spain who know about football will agree with me
By the way, did England teach the Spanish the tiki-taka as well? Oh no, sorry, please don’t answer that either.
No of course they didn't, and a shame they don't play that as skillfully as others, but your not saying that it was the Spannish are you, everyone knows that Barcelona play the best tiki taka, now as most of those eminating from Barcelona consider themselve Catalonian and not Spannish even that would be a debatable subject.
Why not ? you don't mind being abusive or judgemental about people who watch television what is the difference between that and Television ?
Whether the Premier League is the best in the world or not I have not got a clue, if you say they are then that’s fine I’ll take your word for it. I just wish Englad would win a lot more than they do because believe it or not I made England my home and I do cheer for England when they play abroad.
It is simple, the Premier League is the best in the world and made so by the many foreign players who choose to play here, they will learn from thier experience playing within it, even a fool could not fail to learn from something in which he is so involved, they will continue to come to the England to play, often for lesser money, worse weather and even less chance of selection for thier National teams at times, they will come to learn and to enjoy and experience the best league ..... until another league gets better, but that does not mean we don't have talent in this country, watch the upcoming Olympic games and how much talent we have, check out the last Olympic games and see how well we did. One day England will let it's footbal talent train together enough to put the skills they teach and learn to/from foreign players into good use.

Most is addressed in the thread already but as Previously said I feel Englands national team has suffered due to the English players being subs for the Foreighn players who are out on the field. Some of that is stupidness on the players part and maybe greed, big club big wages and paid to sit on the bench.
As for teaching them well? well we do it with English/British or foreighn players. Sorry but we still dominated Europe domestically when our teams were full of home grown talent, in fact maybe we dominated more then. If it were not for the Hysel stadium ban UK teams hold far more European trophys than any other country.
And that is right and confirms what I said, the English Premiership or first division as it was is the best in the world and anyone playing in it can learn a lot, they can of course learn in any league but playing in the best league will always help them more, and though I believe it true of times past when it was predominantely British players even more so now when the best league in the world includes players from every Country thus broadening the experience for the players within it.
MidsCouple24
Que? Abusive and judgemental? Me? I must admit I was confused as to what you meant until I realised (by your quote) of the meaning of plebs in English. Shame, but I used the word plebs in its original meaning in Latin, plebs as opposed to the patricians of ancient Rome. I didn’t realise you use plebs as a derogatory term in the UK. Ahhh I think this is another example of “lost in translation”.
Anyway, to me plebs will always mean the populace or working class, just like me. But according to this article Nero was born a pleb and became an emperor. Then again can one believe Wikipedia much?
But hey ho – you learn something new every day. I’ll be careful from now on to use the word pleb in the UK smile Oh by the way maybe now is the time for coming clean then…
Hello everyone, I’m AWOL and I’m a pleb (take it in any sense you like Latin or English)
My objection to football and Reality TV (and I can add more to this list) is not with the people who watch it but the makers. It's more politically based rather than a personal disdain as you seem to have taken my comments. But really it would take ages to explain why and I would still probably get it wrong – so I’ll leave it at that.
Tweeky,
I had to Google Hysel stadium and found loads of info and pretty graphic stuff about the disaster in 1985 on YouTube. Was that when the term football hooligans was coined? Very interesting. Thanks. I read that the ban was lifted so maybe now it's time for England to shine again.
You were right Mr MidsCouple24, I’m learning a lot about football thanks to this site

Sorry Mids but you are well wide of the mark. Footballers come from all over the world to play in the Premier League because the salaries are HIGHER than elsewhere, mainly due to the money Sky pours into the Premier League.
The number of Champions League places are as a result of past successes by English teams but I think you will find that Italy, Spain and Germany have as many places in the competition as we do.
Whether the Premier League is the best league in the world is also open to debate but there is no denying that the huge number of foreign players now plying their trade in the Premier League has been to the detriment of the English national side.

Maybe, maybe not, England has 4 places in the Group Stage see the end of my post to see that Spain and Germany have only 3 places each with Italy only 2 places (they do have another place each in the play-offs but that means thier last teams may not make the Group Stages that all 4 or our teams are guaranteed, and yes this is decided on previous results by all Countries further proving what I say about the English Premier League over the years.
Whether the Premier League is the best league in the world is also open to debate but there is no denying that the huge number of foreign players now plying their trade in the Premier League has been to the detriment of the English national side.
How far wide of the mark am I, shall we test it with the top 50 players salaries for the 2011/2012 season
Futebol Finance's 50 highest paid players in world football
top 10 - 6 out of 10 play in England
top 20 - 9 out of 20 play in England
top 30 - 12 out of 30 play in England
top 40 - 15 out of 40 play in England
top 50 - 20 out of 50 play in England
So, 20 out of 50 top paid players play in England, less than half.
7 of those 20 play for Chelsea - total wage bill for them 37.5 million
6 of those 20 play for Manchester City - total wage bill for them 30 million
4 of those 20 play for Manchester United - total wage bill for the 19 million
2 of those 20 play for Liverpool - total wage bill for them 11.3 million
1 of those 20 play for Arsenal - total wage bill for them 4.1 million
6 of the remainder play for Real Madrid - total wage bill for them 42.5 million
8 of the remainder play for Barcelona - total wage bill for them 52.4 million
3 of the remainder play for AC Milan - total wage bill for them 15.1 million
2 of the remainder play for Roma - total wage bill for them 9.6 million
2 of the remainder play for Bayern Munich - total wage bill for them9.6 million
20 players in England total wage bill for top players 101.9 million
21 players abroad total wage bill for the top players 129.2 million
average wage for a top player in England 5 million
average wage for a top player abroad 6 million
It would appear from those statistics that the highest wages are paid in Spain and Italy
Englands top paid English players (Rooney, Lampard, Ferdinand, Terry earn about HALF of the wages of Spannish players
Real Madrid and Barcelona's joint wage bill for top players is 94.9 million
the wage bill for 5 English clubs employing top paid players is 101 million
Of the 20 Premier League players on the list, 17 belong to either Chelsea, Manchester City, or Manchester United undeniably the best 3 teams in England last season based on league position at the end, performance in European leagues and domestic cup titles.
Wayne Rooney needs to yell at his agent he only made it to the 20th highest paid footballer with less than HALF the salary of Ronaldo
1 Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, )
2 Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Barcelona, )
3 Lionel Messi (Barcelona, )
4 Samuel Eto'o (Internazionale, )
5 Kaka (Real Madrid, )
6 Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City, )
7 Karim Benzema (Real Madrid, )
8 Carlos Tevez (Manchester City, £7million)
9 John Terry (Chelsea, )
10 Frank Lampard (Chelsea, )
11 Thierry Henry (Barcelona, )

As for being "off the mark" re the Champions league
England have 4 clubs qualifying for the Group Stage
Spain have 3 clubs quallifying for the Group Stage
Germany have 3 clubs qualifying for the Group Stage
All other countries have less clubs that will automatically qualify for the group stage
England, Spain and Germany get 4 places each but England get 4 places in the Group Stage whereas Spain and Germany each get 3 places in the Group Stage and 1 place each in the play offs meaning they may not get 4 teams into the Group Stage
Italy, France and Portugal get 3 places but only 2 places in the Group Stage and 1 place each in the play offs which again means they may only get 2 teams through to the Group Stage.

And finally before people shout "they get too much anyway"
The CEO for Barclays who has been forced to resign for his performance and running of the Bank earned around 20million a year he is not even the highest paid CEO many of whom earn double or treble that which Ronaldo earns, 6 times what Rooney earns and yet fail to do the job they are paid to do.
the BsBSky contribution
A clever organisation that doesn't give it's money away lightly, there is a reason they pay so much into the league.
This is what Wikipedia gives as the reason for such a contribution

The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. This deal will be worth £3 billion as of 2013-14, with BSkyB and BT Group securing the rights to broadcast 116 and 38 games respectively. The Premier League is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to an audience of 643 million viewers. In the 2010–11 season the average Premier League match attendance was 35,363, the second highest of any professional football league behind the German Bundesliga, and stadium occupancy was 92.2% full. The Premier League ranked first in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years, ahead of the Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A.
Sky have a current deal with the German Bundesliga that cost them 2.5 Billion Euros
Sky have a current deal with the Premier League that cost them 3 billion pounds
Which means they put more money into the Bundesliga than they put into the Premier League

Explanation totally accepted lol
Reality TV is something I hate with every fibre of my body, especially since it is not reality, it is more staged, directed and edited than the finest feature film but I accept that a lot of people love it and do not think badly of them for what they enjoy however your explanation above of your use of the word pleb does mean you agree with me (or me with you) and are not abusing those that do watch it.
Tweeky,
I had to Google Hysel stadium and found loads of info and pretty graphic stuff about the disaster in 1985 on YouTube. Was that when the term football hooligans was coined? Very interesting. Thanks. I read that the ban was lifted so maybe now it's time for England to shine again.
You were right Mr MidsCouple24, I’m learning a lot about football thanks to this site
:)

Now then, while we are talking about things getting lost in translation, how about your name, is that your given name, something that means something to you or is it the English use of abbreviation ? ie
AWOL - A military term meaning Absent Without Leave - having no pass to be away from the base - not a deserter because it is deemed that the said person was going to return to the base at some stage.
A chargeable offence under the terms of the Kings Regualtions and Army Act 1955 (in that he at xxxxx on or about the xxxxxxx did absent himself without leave contrary to Section 69 of the Army Act 1955 blah blah blah, yea I served many a day, week, month in jail for that one (I was young and in love) and even my spell in Colchester didn't cure me but I always returned to camp after a week or so.

I think you will find that 3 billion pounds is more than 2.5 billion euros.
England only have all 4 teams qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League as Chelsea qualify as holders. Had Chelsea not won it, the fourth placed team in the Premier League would have entered at the knockout stages.
Your list of highest paid footballers is well out of date, it certainly can't be for the 2011/12 season as you state. Henry left Barcelona in 2010, the same year Rooney signed a contract worth over £10 million per year. Man City pay Ya Ya Toure a similar figure.
