Seeing as you said knowledge for and against:
Don't buy one. You probably have absolutely no need for a 4x4, unless you live in a very hilly rough terrain area that is hard to get to. Plus it chews through petrol and isn't good for the environment. Go for something that isn't going to make you look like a wannabbe green welly wearing, country-type " pajero".... just my opinion...
Oh and if i ever see these huge 4x4's waiting to pull out of a side turning or somesuch... do i let them? Do i buggery!

Nope, I just roll straight over 'em! wink
Don't even feel a bump! :hunk:

Absolutely agree - there was a programme on telly about them ages ago which said everything but 'drivers of 4x4 who don't needthem, just look like idiots'.
I don't let them out either. lol

Ok, I'm normally one of the reasonably rabid 4x4 haters out there, but I can see you need something a bit beefier than a normal car. My suggestion would be a diesel Landrover, possibly with an LPG conversion if you're going to be doing a lot of urban driving in it or want to take advantage of the lower fuel tax on LPG.
I've looked into getting one in the past so I can tow a decently-sized boat around and not worry too much about suddenly losing traction on a weed-covered slipway. I found a few places on the 'net advertising ex-military Landrovers, some of which had spent most of their lives in storage, for what seemed a very reasonable price. You also have the advantage of a huge market in after-market accessories and spares, so it should be relatively cheap to maintain or customise to your requirements.
We have a Diesel Hyundai Santa-FE which we use to pull a caravan. Fabulous vehicle which we would recommend to anyone.

lol...chrs bhd....for that...hey doesnt matter what you have someone's gonna hate ya for it...lol.....done saloons, hatch backs, estates...(sherman's or cheiftains mrs wouldn't approve....).....if i wanna be flash....i'd stay in the merc.....coz flash it is......lol....just a matter now of wanker over landrover.....ooops sorry...pajero over landrover......
The safety standards applied to the performance of 4X4s are not as stringent as for cars. So if you don't really need one, yer a mug if you get one!
i'll bear that in mind.......if i join the demolition derby........

Well I don't have a problem with 4X4s per se, I just think everyone would be better off if they drove something appropriate to their needs rather than clogging up the country's road network for the sake of fashion. As I said, I've considered a Landrover myself, but I wouldn't get one unless I was actually going to take advantage of it's performance in difficult conditions or for towing a reasonably large load (about 1000kg for the boat I want to build and it's trailer).

Somebody with better info should feel free to step in and correct me, but IIRC the Landrover Discovery and Defender are in the top five safest vehicles on UK roads measured by deaths per accident.

Yeah, but how many accidents travelled?? Honestly I don't know but I do know 4X4s are not covered by such stringent regulation. That's not to say some good manufacturers don't exceed the standard.
I have to say don't bother unless you're a farmer. Petrol prices are only going to go up, so lugging around an extra axel's worth of drive in a big box that's about as aerodynamic as a brick on knobbly uncomfortable tyres strikes me as a pretty stupid move. I'd stick with the S-class if I were you!
if u want one hun get one, we had a land cruiser and loved it .
and yes we used to go off road.
lifes too fooking short to worry about a frigging car.
if i had the money now a would have a range rover or a nissan pathfinder.
sierra x x
plus theres more room to shag lol
Well its a bit of a how long is a piece of string question really . If money were no object then a Porche Cayenne or a Pimped up Hummer would be kewl (vorspring durch fuckme lookat the chrome on tha!)- being more sensible ive owned a couple over the years . One of the original Landrover Discoveries which was tanklike and reliable , but old fashioned and rolled round corners like a pig ( I broke it even though they said I couldnt) then I owned a Shogun which wasn't a bad car but for the plastic Jap interior - incidentally the Pajero is simply the Japanese version of the Shogun and if its called Pajero it will be a Japanese imported car ( worth making absolutely sure all the parts are available here -especially electrical parts as they often differ greatly from the proper English models and that can be expensive) .
Over all I agree that unless you can afford one of the very new very expensive hybrid type 4x4's then Id look a a car instead . The arguaments for off roaders are pretty weak unless at least 30% of your time is spent feeding cows or towing gliders - if you really want a big jamjar with the guts for some mud id go for an Audi 4x4 estate .
if you do decide to buy one make sure it is diesel and kept well locked up as they have a habbit of disappearing in the night sometimes in the day.

off road is a good idea for avoiding speed cameras
Being a Subaru fan and owner, all theirs have all-wheel-drive so you won't slide around (great in snow/the rain/mud), the Forester (or is it Outback?) might be cheaper and certainly a bit less heavyweight than a full land-rover type. Drive very nicely too, the more modern revisions are based on the same chassis as an Impreza (if it's comfortable enough for you) and that's an awesome car and for extra pull the turbo version's pretty damn quick. The only other ones I know anything about are the LandRover/Range Rover which have already been discussed lots, or the Rav4 which is totally just the town run-about for those who want a 4x4 and a bit of a girly one too (excuse the comment but you know what I mean). Fine if that's what you want but is it suitable for your situation?
Range-Rover sport is the top car lots of celebs have been buying up and they liked on Top Gear, you can get it in very bright colours but I suspect that's way out of the budget. Would write more but I'm more a fan of sports cars than 4x4s.

Why - planning on doing >60 off road? Are you mad??? biggrin Even >30mph would be ...er... interesting, for proper off-road tracks. Take a spirits mixer with you and give it the best shake it'll get..
This:

and this:

are interesting. Not too sure about the significance of some of the stats but th 'Crashworthiness' paragraph in the second link is what I was talking about earlier.
Seems to be a bit of an Aussie fetish!
You could try here as well

or better still

I wouldn't take TE with you though, they may burn him as a witch! lol
