The safety standards applied to the performance of 4X4s are not as stringent as for cars. So if you don't really need one, yer a mug if you get one!
i'll bear that in mind.......if i join the demolition derby........
I have to say don't bother unless you're a farmer. Petrol prices are only going to go up, so lugging around an extra axel's worth of drive in a big box that's about as aerodynamic as a brick on knobbly uncomfortable tyres strikes me as a pretty stupid move. I'd stick with the S-class if I were you!
Well its a bit of a how long is a piece of string question really . If money were no object then a Porche Cayenne or a Pimped up Hummer would be kewl (vorspring durch fuckme lookat the chrome on tha!)- being more sensible ive owned a couple over the years . One of the original Landrover Discoveries which was tanklike and reliable , but old fashioned and rolled round corners like a pig ( I broke it even though they said I couldnt) then I owned a Shogun which wasn't a bad car but for the plastic Jap interior - incidentally the Pajero is simply the Japanese version of the Shogun and if its called Pajero it will be a Japanese imported car ( worth making absolutely sure all the parts are available here -especially electrical parts as they often differ greatly from the proper English models and that can be expensive) .
Over all I agree that unless you can afford one of the very new very expensive hybrid type 4x4's then Id look a a car instead . The arguaments for off roaders are pretty weak unless at least 30% of your time is spent feeding cows or towing gliders - if you really want a big jamjar with the guts for some mud id go for an Audi 4x4 estate .
if you do decide to buy one make sure it is diesel and kept well locked up as they have a habbit of disappearing in the night sometimes in the day.
off road is a good idea for avoiding speed cameras
Being a Subaru fan and owner, all theirs have all-wheel-drive so you won't slide around (great in snow/the rain/mud), the Forester (or is it Outback?) might be cheaper and certainly a bit less heavyweight than a full land-rover type. Drive very nicely too, the more modern revisions are based on the same chassis as an Impreza (if it's comfortable enough for you) and that's an awesome car and for extra pull the turbo version's pretty damn quick. The only other ones I know anything about are the LandRover/Range Rover which have already been discussed lots, or the Rav4 which is totally just the town run-about for those who want a 4x4 and a bit of a girly one too (excuse the comment but you know what I mean). Fine if that's what you want but is it suitable for your situation?
Range-Rover sport is the top car lots of celebs have been buying up and they liked on Top Gear, you can get it in very bright colours but I suspect that's way out of the budget. Would write more but I'm more a fan of sports cars than 4x4s.
This:
and this:
are interesting. Not too sure about the significance of some of the stats but th 'Crashworthiness' paragraph in the second link is what I was talking about earlier.
Seems to be a bit of an Aussie fetish!
