Im afraid like Ebay you only get to give feedback once at point of purchase so to speak. I would suggest the situation you have described is quite an unusual one, and a PM to Admin to invistigate it could allow for it to be changed manually as it is clearly not the norm.
Parts of the site are already and have always been public, this means that the Shrep bar will also be displayed publicly in those areas. If you have any concerns about this simply lock all the settings down to "private" and only display the basic bar information. You can always invite people to view it privately to stay 100% in control.
By default the system is off so you will have all the choices before it is activated.

I will try and answer your questions as best as I can on understanding them.
1. Once a comment is made it cant be edited
2. You can use Shrep without the friends function at all. But ONLY friends can Vouch for your profile.
3. The SHrep page is public but does not have to show anything other than your SHrep bar score. It can be put not to display anything, or can be friends only or by private invite. The SHrep bar also displays on public areas of the site like photo adds etc. You have a widget if you use other sites and want to use the SHrep system on them that will point back to your main public SHrep page as well.

SHrep is a reputation system that "most" of the site members wated and voted to have, nearly 90% from memory. But like all changes here a few people hate everything you do. No problem with that its just the way it is. Fortunately that is the power of cross site surveys everyone gets to have a say and we only build what people vote to have.

Our survey said that people wanted custom profiles, they also wanted to be able to make notes, select options to, accomodate, travel, send virtual gifts etc.
Funnily enough if you select the options in your profile they page fills up, the rest of the room top centre is for SHrep when it goes live in the next month or so, and a public planner (if you want to display it). In short the old page would not accomodate, you have the nearest upgraded one possible in blue, pink and green for those who dont like change.
The old ones took 5 mins to build these took months!!!!

We are taking another look at the messanger settings today, any freezing is likely because of having multiple tabs open as your browser only can have so many connections to pass information across. We have a few things to try this afternoon that might help somewhat.
On Saturday 268,000 messages were sent on the site messanger
and we have not had any load or server issues so whatever it is is client side.
You can help resolve these problems by letting us know how many tabs that you have open, along with the operating system that you are using and browser.

One of the guys in the office who has been working on it uses a mac, unless its a really old crap one or you are running some way out west operating system it should work ok as his is fine. Log out and log back in and then try it again. Failing that pop a ticket into support and we will take a look.
