Does it hurt or have any effects similar to giving blood??
To register all that's needed is a 10ml sample of your blood (less than is taken for most other routine blood tests). The National Blood Service would take this at one of their centres, the Anthony Nolan trust either at a recruitment clinic, or via a kit they send out for your GP or local hospital to take the sample. In light of Callista's sad news, a number of people have asked about becoming bone marrow donors. Having donated myself, I've gathered together some information and links.
Why is bone marrow needed ?
In order to cure Leukaemia it's necessary to destroy the patient's bone marrow using chemo or radiotherapy. Marrow from a healthy, matching donor is then tranfused into the patient's blood to replace it.
Can I become a donor ?
Maybe, you need to meet the normal requirements for blood doning, and also and attend a registration session, more details in the links at the bottom of this post.
Edit - It's come to my attention that the National Blood Service accept a slightly wider age range of donors than the AN Trust

A process called HLA (Human leukocyte antigen) matching, better known as tissue typing, has to be carried out to ensure a match. Your HLA profile will be recorded onto the donor databases, so that a match may be made with a patient in need.

If and when your marrow is needed, one of two procedures, either a small operation using a needle to extract bone marrow from your pelvis, or, increasingly, a non-surgical procedure which extracts cells directly from your blood, will be used.
Thorough medicals are carried out before any procedure and the risks of donation are minimal.

I'd hazard a guess at never. There's no political, economic, or, locally, social advantage to helping the starving thousands of miles away. Fortunately there are aid organisations doing something, because there's very little chance of governmental interest in an issue that will not win votes

1) Why isn't it coming off the insurance of the person who bumped you ?
2) Why will it stop you having a car if it's written off ?
The insurance will cover the finance, leaving you with neither car nor debt, then, assuming you've been making the payments, you can finance another car. In fact, the finance company will probably fall over themselves to encourage you to do just that.
If they do write it off (and you should probably encourage that) then you'll have the balance, if any, in your hands in a matter of days. If they don't, press the bodyshop hard for a hire car, which they should be able to charge to the insurers
