my partner in Switzerland paid £172 per year when we lived there for 3 years having declared a pre condition of Diabetes, treatment for that condition whilst we were there cost £21000 which was paid for by the insurance company without question
£21000 seems an awful lot to treat Diabetes even over 3 years, Diabetes is usually controlled by diet or a combination of medication and diet, but complications associated with Diabetes can occur, did your partner have any. I knew an elderly gentleman who had private medical insurance through an employer, he was diabetic in his later years poor circulation to his lower legs resulted in a double amputation performed privately, he was dumped back on the NHS because Bupa refused him any more treatment.
I didn't mention my condition it is End Stage Renal failure, treatment is dialysis at a cost of about £35,000 pa I've been on dialysis for over 10 years I can't see a private medical insurer offering me cover when they know for certain they'll have to payout.

We dont want to take any of the laptops away with us as they are far to cumbersome and big to cart around and my own laptop is about knackered.

I quite agree with your sentiments Paddy the site should be allowed to progress, unfortunately some don't like change and would happily see the site stagnate. I don't see the sudden influx of past contributors and 'recycling' of old threads as a regression of the site, they make the site appear active and interesting. There is very little originality left to be had when it comes to quality threads on forums like this and often topics are repeated. I look through another forum regularly, I'd say 90% is utter drivel the ones of any real quality have been done before often on the previous page.

I can't be certain how long I've been visiting SH, I say visiting because way back when first discovered SH the part of the site that interested me was the photo adverts, back then you didn't need to be a member to reply to peoples adverts. I occasionally read the forums but never felt I had anything to contribute, there where others who did that who often expressed views I shared far more eloquently than I could. It wasn't until late 2005 that I actually registered a profile I'd never needed to before.

Your assumption is partially correct Neil, Yes the site in question is free to join and you can use it for free too but it is a commercial site owned by a limited company. It generates revenue from 2 streams, advertising and a "site supporter" package. Any one who rocks the boat or frightens the punters doesn't seem to last long.
The scam in question could have been perpetrated on any site even this one. It just happens they chose to use the other "popular" site. The fact it's "free" just makes it easier to re-invent themselves and do it all over again.

I see your point entirely, but if someone wanted to be a 'bit more proactive on the site and make the first move' they have the option to upgrade their membership. It's all down to personal choice.
If in this economic climate they can spare the upgrade fee, which kind of brings us back round to where this thread started.

When you quoted me did you notice it says receive and send messages, and not send and receive? Which is exactly what you have described.

Wouldn't say I agree with you, if you had said reply I would. Sorry if I'm being pedantic but regardless of how the words are arranged, 'send and receive' or 'receive and send' most people reading the words send messages implies just that, that they can send messages with no restrictions.

Yes I do believe that in the last ten years 1.4 million accounts have been registered on this site.
I never said I believe them all to be active today or genuine.
In your post you said users not accounts when that isn't correct, yes it is true over it's lifetime + accounts have been created but many of those accounts have long since been abandoned some never used, people are lazy and in a lot of cases just can't be bothered to delete profiles which has lead to this over inflated figure of A more realistic figure would be a quarter of that and then I'm being generous, only about 15% of the site is active within a 90 day period and by active I mean logged in.
I'm a single guy I share a house with family, if it was just me an my sister it wouldn't be a problem she knows I swing but she has a 8 yr old daughter and there is the elderly relative ok my dad who lives with us too. I've often considered getting a place of my own but practicality an circumstances dictate otherwise.
