Community Charge (poll tax) was a very fair system. The problem lay with the council rates that had not been increased year on year, so when the community charge came in at the figure everyone should have been paying it was a bit of a shock.

100% correct - It was far .. but it came a shock to those who'd benefitted from services but had never had to contribute to the cost of providing them.
i cant see these new Classes catching ....
under the old class systme we all knew where we where ... now no-one except the mega rich and the ultra poor will be able to tell for sure which category they are supposed to occupy!
feed of Crap!

He isn't likely to get out in 15 years though.

Absolutely right!
It is highly unlikely he will ever again walk the streets a free man....Why are people A:WAYS so quick to complain that the sentences are too lenient?? These comments bear no relation to reality.... this guy will almost certainly die behid bars ...which i think we would all agree is no more than he deserves..."lenient sentence?" I don't think so!
Jack
..then the case will fail ... unless the insuers chicken out and choose to pay up rather than fight!
You will also notice a number of street lights in the area and I can personally testify to there being enough light for a rather drunken me to wander through the area several times at silly o clock in the morning in recent weeks!
If Trev is right that there is enough light to identify the "hazard" (and a court agrees) then this silly case is going to be thrown out and she will not receive compensation... the problem is that public liability insurers generally lack the back bone to fight ill concieved claims....in reality the probability is that her lawyer will claim a sum - say £35,000 and the insurers will decided to settle at say £15,000 rather than risk losing in court ...
the result is that the officer who makes a spurious claim is rewarded for her bare faced cheek ... and everyone else pays just a little bit more when they come to renew their insurance!
I hope that in this case the insurers fight the claim and have it thrown out ... but i wouldn't be too confident that they will !
Jack
When we were that age I suppose there was always the chance that you sized the other fella up and looked at your chances...The chances for NK to win are nil, all that will remain is a small passage in the history books. That is no reason to go to war.
Agreed Rogue.... but was always subject to how much i'd had to drink and how encouraging my mates were...
I suspect you are right ... i hope and pray you are right that this is just posturing by the young pretender... but i don't think i'd bet my last £1 on him having a really firm grasp of reality or a sense of perspective and NK's role (or lack thereof) on the World stage.
Jack
I can understand why some men shave and also why some choose not to....
I know hundred of thousands of men would disagree but it's goatee beards and moustaches that i can't fathom ... seems the worst of all worlds ... you can't give up shaving altogether but equally you are never rid of the facial growth !
Jack
You may be right to question whether being a Christian makes you a member of a race ditto whether being a Roman Catholic or for that matter a Muslim..... because all of these religions are proselytising religions (hope spell check will help me out!).
The Jews and certain other religions did not proselytisye (i.e. actively convert others) and so the membership of the religion is very closely tied to their race
though there are a small number of exceptions I would suggest there is no real room to argue that the Jews are not a distinct "race"
Jack
I suppose we could go down the path of questioning whether being a jew is to be a member of a religion or a race ... (I would say both)
Jed I can accept your right to hold your view but i can not agree m8 - Hitler was a racist pure and simple...
I suspect that Rogue's assessment about what NK wants is correct but it's the last point that concerns me most...
this is a super sized military state ruled by a guy who is 30 +/- and believes that he is the latest in a line of air breathing deities... Can we be sure that he won't feel that he has to make the first strike to avoid loosing face by backing down....
anyone else remember what it was like to be 30? How many fights or arguments would you walk away from today whereas 10 / 15/ 20 / 25 / 30 years ago you just piled straight in and fuck the consequences!
Jed
Are you suggesting that AH and BM were not racists because they hated everybody equally?
AH: I hate all Jews whether black or white therefore i am not a racist?
BM: I'm with mate .. and I hate all Gypsy whether they come from Poland or Romania or Serbia or Albania.. and because my hatred is so "pure" i am not a racist either
Gotta admit to having some difficulty following your logic on this one Jed.
Fascists would have you believe that theirs is a considered set of political beliefs rather than a knee jerk xenophobic reaction against anyone from a different culture or ethnic background....
but that's just bollocks .... of course fascists are racists.... if it looks like a duck waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck ..... it's a duck .. however much it might like to pretend it's a swan!
Very interesting exchange here... and no one slagging the others off... feels almost grown up!
I think Foxlady makes a useful point as does Rogue Trader which goes to the heart of this issue.
If the garage owner has done his risk assessments - as he would be required to do to safe guard you or I if we went to his garage - he will not have a claim to answer...... if however the premises were "defective" and would have presented a hazard to you, or me or Rogue or Trev or anyone else on his premises as a customer of his business then he is probably going to be found to have breached the duty of care he owed to all members of the public ...and that will include a police officer attending in the course of his / her duty.
The point is that the duty of care owed to the police by the garage owner is not a higher duty of care than the one he owes to the general public ...BUT it is not a lower one either!

Well except shooting him in the head I don't know what else we can do

Quote by GnV
So, that is sensible debate then...
I'll leave you to it.

I for one would not be at all unhappy if some trigger happy guy shot him in the head. I bet there would also privately be a few happy people in politics as well as out there in the real world, who would be dancing to their greatest tunes.
I think shooting him would be a very good outcome for the UK's finances and for it's overall safety, it certainly has been where Bin Bag Laden is concerned. Dead equals no more problems..........simples.:bounce:
*attempts to steer the thread back on track*
I don't want him dead or shot in the head and although he perhaps should be sent back from whence he came it isn't through any fault of his own that he hasn't been but rather the fault of the UK and European Parliaments who dream up the laws/guidelines and are then beaten by them.
I don't quite understand as to why they haven't just put him on a plane and flouted the 'law' just as they have in the past with other situations mind.
"Flouting the law" ..."ends justify the means" ... beware .. this is the thin edge of the wedge...
once you go down this route where does it stop?? ...would you be confident that if the govt were to flout the law in this situation that they'd hesitate to flout the law in other circumstances .... ? I don't think they would.
Adhereance to the law is a safer guard for Qatada .. Yes certainly BUT it is also a safeguard for you , me and our friends neighbours work colleagues family and friends
....and if that makes me a "limp wristed liberal" ... guilty as charged!
Jack
Do we want to get involved in hostilities involving North Korea.... Absolutely NOT !!
I think that was a rhetorical question from Jed ... I'm sure it was!

There are no excuses for the level of treatment that was discovered in the Stafford hospital review. However I thinks it's a step too far to say that the nursing profession as a whole does not care.

Absolutely true ... of course the nursing profession as a whole cares... the problem is that we want it all ways ... we want dedicated bright and well motivated people to undertake hard and academically rigorous training, work long hours in shifts over night at weekends and at Christmas ..we want those same people to put up with stressed out relatives, lack of staff due to cit backs and abusive patients......oh and we'd like these paragons of virtue to do it simply for the love of the job
just remind me ..why are we having trouble finding candidates of the right calibre?!?!?!?
Jack banghead
Do you really think ?
Didn't that attitude disappear when they stopped making Carry On films and Ealing Comedies?
you may well be right ... but of course there is no guatantee that the bank's share value will increase..... if you look at the Halifax their shares are now worth approx 1/10th of what they were 10 years ago!

Charging by weight is wrong there are two many variables, I see the reasoning behind what the airlines are saying but as someone said it is swings and roundabouts, a plane half full of children and average sized adults compared with a plane full of all adults and half of them overweight.
But if someone occupies two seats then they should pay for two seats - simplez really

absolutely ... which is what happens now!
Where does it stop ? ... would a person weighing 9st get their seat for less than someone weighing 12st? But equally why should someone who weighs 30st fly get thier seat for the same price as someone who weighs 1/3rd of thier weight
As always there is a balance to be struck here (gotta love the pun haven't you???)
Isn't the answer that the really large already pay more .... if you need to have two seats to be comfortable you pay twice as much as a person who occupies only one.
..simples! lol
Altho people are quick to say that certain classes of people should not get benefits or hand outs I hear less about what they would do with these people.
As a society we need to protect the vulnerable ... from what ever part of society they come from.
If we have Romanian families with young children who need housing then they must be housed... because no one wants to see familes with young children living rough on the streets of the UK
I think we do need to control immigration but once these people are here they become our problem. If they have entered illegally they should be returned home but if people are here lawfully they must be helped....
..and in return for our help they must contribute to society ideally by working and paying taxes - that is the social contract we all have with our generous welfare society.

I am suggesting, that this lady has had these dogs before she knew the hardships they she was to endure. She is fully entitled to keep and look after them. As I said, your pets do become part of your extended family.
No I would not suggest she has any more. there again I'm sure she no intention of doing so. But you said you felt sorry for her hardship until you saw the dogs !!! I have one dog...I feed actually yestrday brought big bag of tesco dog food. Cost me and will feed the dog for at least a month, twice a day. a day !! not exactly going to break the bank now is it !!!

Life is hard ....we all have to make decisions .
Why should my taxes pay for this woman to keep two dogs and to have a spare bedroom.
Hard working people who don`t claim benefits have to make difficult decisions every day .
I dispair at your hard faced attitude and, total lack of compassion. You would gladly see two dogs put down ( because lets face it thats what would happen....Thousands of dogs now in rescue homes waiting to try and be re-housed ) because the a day it takes to feed, will be contributed to by you and 30 million other tax payers !!!
I hope you don't fall on hard times yourself Flower, but if you do, I sincerly hope others show you more compassion, than you are willing to show yourself !!!
I doubt it is as much as per day ..even for 2 dogs..
In this country even on the "tightest" budget everybody is entitled to some modest element of "luxury" / a bit of walking around money...some smoke fags others have the odd pint.. if a family budget were to include the cost of a couple of pints each week or a cheap bot of vino evey few days no one would suggest that they were living in the lap of luxury or spending beyong their means ...
a subscriotion to SKY now seems "accepted" as one of life's "necessaries" nowadays and i bet this lady doesn't have Sky!
Let her keep her two dogs ... besides which the exercise she takes walking them every day is probably saving the health service money!

Actually no, but I have been invited to by the makers of the programme

Hello, I have just been looking at your site and think your place sounds brilliant. We’re casting for a new series of Channel 4’s popular ‘Four in a Bed’, celebrating the great Bed and Breakfasts and small hotels around the UK. Whether it be their five glowing stars or the quirky and unusual approach that the owners deem their unique selling point, the programme will look at the huge variety of accommodation providers around the country. We are looking for enthusiastic and proud owners who feel that their business stands out from the competition and has something special to offer for the price that visitors are charged. This series will now not only feature a wide range of B&Bs but also small hotels. They’ll all be run by owners who are deeply committed to their business and can explain in a lively and engaging way why their place, and the area in which it’s located, is so good to visit. Each week, four places will compete against one another to be crowned that week’s best B&B or small hotel… and the judges of the competition will be the owners themselves – as they will each visit one another’s properties. This is a potentially brilliant opportunity for owners to showcase their business on national television and highlight why customers should flock to visit them. We hope the programme will continue to encourage viewers to choose independently run places to stay in, rather than the larger chain operations. Please do get in touch if this is of interest to you as we would love to hear from you. Best Wishes, The Four in a Bed team
I would not consider doing the programme but do enjoy watching it and have picked up a lot of "what not to do" and "that's a good idea" over the years.
The trouble is, the media wants to make you watch, I believe the other contestants would be chosen for the views on swingers not just their own premises, I believe the comments by the programme would be centred more on the sensationalist than the true roots of swinging (like minded adults having fun with their partners consent)
Our guest house is discreet, we value discretion for ourselves and our visitors, it would not be in keeping with that policy to put it on National TV.
But I cannot help thinking what the programme would be like, that or "Come Dine with Me" selected for a group of swingers, the food chosen, the after dinner party games lol 69position blast whip
I do wonder though if it could be done properly, unbiasedly, and if one of the Blackpool hotels/guest houses will take up the offer as I have no doubt they too have been approached.
Do I think I could win - absolutely, when it comes to a guest house for swingers, I honestly don't think I can be beaten, against general hotels and Guest Houses, well that's different, we cater for a special group of people and our facilities and policies work for them where they would be of no interest to others, like any business you cannot please everyone but we come close for our guests.

I think you are orobably right not to take part ... but the idea has its attarctions and would make compelling viewing!
Jack
I am sure there is a witty reposte to make here ..... but I can't be bothered! lol
Interesting that 48 hours after the thread was started by Trev ...only 9 people have chosen to take part in their online survey ...
....ONLY 9...

I am not against West Ham or that they got the Olympic Stadium.
I am just sad that the place had to be sold at all (or leased) it is going to cost £150 million to convert it to a football stadium, £15 million from West Ham.
It cost a few bob to build, the rent will be around £2 million per year.
What a shame we couldn't afford to keep it as a National Sports Stadium, available freely and to hire for lot's of sports and events, we have seen what it is capable of producing, wouldn't it have been great if the lesser funded sports could have booked it for large events, wouldn't it have been nice if we could have organised Roman games type events where many sports were represented on week long extraveganza's of table tennis, archery, volley ball and a host of other sports that cannot normally host large events.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go along and watch your favourite sport and see other sports taking place on the same day. It might be good if National Lottery funds could have been used to finance it along with revenue from hiring it out as an event location to the private sector.
What a training establishment it could have been and that could have made use of other facilities that were build just for the Olympics including accommodation.
What benefit it could have been to School and College sports capabilities. Surely there was a way.

Agree with this 100%
I don't think it matters that the australian PM was in nappies ....the symbolism is important.
Those victims of this policy who packed the Oz parliament to hear the applogy thought it was important
This is the same as awarding medals to the Atlantic Convoy and Bomber Command crews from WW2 ..and the apologu given by the japanese for attrocities commeited against allied troops.
